@iTzBoney Either the hero 1 or 2. The new hero2 is great , but for 100 bucks less the hero 1 is fine. I shoot mainly 720 at 60fps, no complaints. Any more questions, fire away.
@locouk No, no software comes with the gopro. I use an old version of Avid express pro HD. You can use i-movie and even quicktime pro to make time lapses .... search how to on youtube and you might find a good answer for you.
@locouk gopro just came out with a very basic video editing software called gopro cineform studio.
i have found that after you 'stitch' your photos together into a video, the video has to be sped up even more, which is pretty easy on almost any of your regular video editing software.
@waiting4winter36 Thanks, at the moment I'm using a program called Makeavi. It is an .exe that is opened every time you want to use it so it dosen't actually install full time on your hard drive. You have to run the set up each time you need to use it.
I did a 7 day time lapse with no issues but am not sure if i used my 960 or 1080 gopro. It took 60,000 pics. You can see it on youtube all good seven day time lapse pretty lights country roads
@DSPoductions there is a instruction booklet that comes with it telling you how to do the timelapse, but the spin, i heard they used a kitchen timer for that.
@BKingAndy FIXED !!!!! ..... If you own a gopro hero HD ...... not the 960 ..... or standard def ..... you need to download the firmware to your camera .... its a must and you also get great new features.
This is not about the 999 timelapse problem but I need to post how superb the customer service of Gopro is. I got a loose C Clip on the shutter button of the H2Oproof case, then somehow the button got lost during a trip to LA. I contacted Gopro to ask for a spare shutter button & C Clip. What it did? GoPro sent me a new case, free of charge + some stickers. This is one great company who stands firmly behind their products. Now I'm waiting for FEDEX to deliver my LCD Bacpac. Gopro, you rock!
@dietcoke1996 Yes I agree, the 9999 problem was unfortunate, and gopro customer service has been great with me. I only leave this video up because there are still tons of people out there with older gopro heros that eventually run into this problem. I found the counter problem early because of timelapse, just think how long it will take someone to find the 9999 problem if they only shoot videos on vacation. thanks for the post. P.S. I want some GoPro stickers for my camera box!
@dietcoke1996 I agree with you, GoPro customer service is awsome. I had a GoPro Hd on december...and came back to my contry (Colombia). One day the camera just decided to stop working, I contacted the customer service and the asked me to send the camera...they ckeck the camera the same morning when the camera arrived to the warranty service and by the afternoon they send me a new one. That's a great service.

how can i tell what version firmware is already in my camera? in other words, how do i know whether i need to update the firmware, or not? i'd rather not wait til i hit 9999 and glitch out.
@floydstinkyboy You need to update your firmware. If for no other reason then they have added a bunch of new features and accessories to the HD hero, like the LCD back. If your HD hero is new you might not need it, but I would bet you do. You can always e-mail GoPro with your serial number and they can tell you. But, don't bother them till you have a real problem, trust me, you want the new features in the upgrade. My favorite, you can now shoot timelapse at 1 frame per second used to be 2.
@Getawaymoments yes, since then i have taken around half a zillion pictures. only one glitch, not sure what it was - it just stopped taking pix, frozen. could not turn it off or change mode. so i removed battery, and card, then replaced them, all is well. had to reset the clock.
If I buy a GoPro Hero, Do you think it will have this problem and i will install the firmware? Or it is not necessary for models built after a certain date? Thanks.
@yolovema I bet if you buy it from Gopro you will be fine. Now if you buy it from a discount retailer that is moving old stock you may get one of the old ones. Either way, no problem. Just update the firmware. With most new cameras these days you will eventually have to update the firmware. Gopro and have fun!
@ClosedCircuitMedia Maybe .... if its a newer HD gopro probably not, but if its four to six months old maybe.
Gopro has fixed the problem but there are lots of cameras out there. If you update your firmware for the new accessories the problem will be fixed. I only leave this video up now because there are cameras out there that may show this problem and it will help folks trouble shoot it. Update your firmware ... Gopro tech support is great, e-mail them they will help.
@wooex Sorry to hear it, you need to e-mail gopro support. I have had great results from them since I posted this video. They may want you to send in your camera, do it. The last little problem I had was fixed with a new part within a couple days. Bottom line, some cameras are lemons, call them and send it back. Good luck.
@Getawaymoments I don't know if it's worth it for me to send a camera back, since i never had a warranty for it.I bought it from ebay about a year ago as "used".
I have never had any problems with it,than about a month ago it started.
Well,it is what it is right? :)
I will try to sell it on ebay, than i will get a new one. :)
@wooex I would still call Gopro, its their product they may stand behind it. Now if it was a damaged through use situation maybe not, but if it is the glitchie firmware issue they may fix it or replace it. Is this a standard def gopro or an HD? The HD's were not out a year ago. You should call them with the serial number, you may get lucky.
@wooex cool, funny thing, I got a new HD hero a month ago from amazon, thought it was updated ..... nope, so one of the many things I have to do this weekend is upgrade the firmware on yet another gopro.
it's amazing how many thoughtless questions and comments there are here. Did you people even try to use your brains before giving up? You seriously couldn't use common sense to figure out how to charge your camera while shooting? And you wanna know how to pan while shooting a timelapse?! You use a device THAT PANS!!!!
@smilemuchproductions Actually, its a great still tool as well. Timelapses work best when their made from a series of still pictures, and at 30 frames per second or 30 stills per second you can go through 9999 pictures fast ......
@goldypker No, I don't think so. When you first plug your gopro into your computer it should go into charge mode and the red light should come on. Only when you press the mode button should the "usb" show up. I think the company is working on a external power supply as part of its expansion slot, keep an eye on their site for news about that.
@goldypker Use a 1amp USB charger. I use my iPhone charger, lots of phones and other devices use this same USB type connection for charging. You can only charge from your computer when the power's off, so use an adapter like I mentioned instead, you can get one for very little $. Just look up 1amp usb charger on Google, it's a "mini usb" connection. There are wall and car charger options. There are also battery packs that will do it if you're not around a power source.
@jonvenusti I think the correct answer is they were rushing the new HD hero to get it ready for NAB. I was surprised that they did not solve the 9999 issue before a mass release. I use these cameras at work everyday and for my little youtube projects, I have no big complaints.
@cat325ccr Don't know for sure. The display will show 999 once you reach 1000 clips, this does not mean that the camera is not working. If the camera is still blinking you should be fine. The only way you will know if you have the dreaded 9999 problem is when the file counter stops at 9999 when you download your files.
If you have an older HD Gopro you need to do the update for more then the 9999 problem.
GoPro has a fix for this. I just went thru it with mine. Send it to them, and they will reflash it with a firmware patch that will make the camera start a new file count everytime a fresh SD card is inserted. This works, but causes duplicate file names once you tranfer the files to your computer. Annoying, but at least the camera works now.

@tjm52071 Thats great news, I got an e-mail from another user who said that they got theirs re-flashed and that it hung up on 9999 again. how long ago did you send yours in? I will contact them, cause I've use two that need an update.
Make sure you have the updated firmware installed on your HD HERO and you’ll be good to go.
If you go to the Support tab at GoPro.com you will find lots of useful information. The first listing is Firmware Updates. Click the link directly below it for HD HERO Cameras to find out more about the other features the firmware update will provide, and also how to download the file and upload it to your HERO. Also, if you have the HD HERO 960, there is no concern or firmware updated necessary.
I have exactly the same issue. I sent in the HD and they reset it. The leaving the battery out 48 hour trick did not work. I sent it in and they sent it back working but now I have the problem again. I do not know what to do...

I'm at 6,119. I'm guessing I'm doomed to have this happen to me also. What a shame- just purchased every single mount this evening on the website and thought I'd start looking into the forums for fun things to do. Now I find out I have something not so fun to look forward to that was a problem dating back in March? Awesome!!!!
I wrote a few messages back & forth with GoPro support. They suggested I remove the battery for 48 hours to reset the counter. They suggested sending the camera in if that didn't solve the issue. They also said the new firmware would be out in 8 weeks (older replies to other people indicated it would be out in mid-June).
I asked them if after they reflashed my camera if the 9999 photo problem would happen again & didn't get an answer.
Hey, I'm having the exact same issue with my time-lapses - I get about 400 pictures and then boom - picture number 9999, it creates hundreds of folders, camera locks up and have to pull the battery. I know it is not my card and I appreciate you confirming my thoughts that it is a firmware glitch.
I really hope that the firmware release (when it eventually appears) fixes this issue because right now I have a 3 month old £300 GoPro brick. Thanks
@bl0at3r....... just thought I'd mention, I have tried pulling the battery for 24hrs and formatting the card in-camera in the hope that my file numbers reset to 0001 - but they do not.
@bl0at3r I have pulled the battery for 48 hours .... no luck. Tried several different cards. no luck. Word is, if you mail them your camera they will re-image your camera, but in another 10,000 pictures will the problem still crop up?
The funny thing is right now you can find the old GoPro heros on sale for cheap.
I think I saw them for $99 at costco. You can do good HD lapses with them, it just sucks because of battery and memory restrictions. Thanks for your comment.
Sorry to see the issues you are experiencing. Please contact our support team and we will see if we can't get you situated. Just go to our main page and click on the Support tab.
@GoProCamera I have this same problem. My camera's now a brick & I'm going to miss the end of a time lapse of my back yard landscaping. My wife is furious (I'm not so thrilled either)
GoPro, the quickest way to make people happy is to send out the firmware fix. Please help!
I think you should contact GoPro and demand a solution to this iPhone like "attennagate". Who is the "Steve Jobs" of GoPro? I would like to find out what they have to say?
ill tell you whats wrong... there isnt any space left on the memory card so it cant record any more. : p
