Awesome plane Douglas got it right considering the longest production run in history (if you consider the md 80 as a fancy dc9, which it is) Only thing is I'd hate to be in the rest room during turbine fan blade seperation.
Question: If you get hired on NWA or Delta and you start your career with a DC-9 will you fly the same aircraft untill you retire or will you get promoted to bigger aircraft based on seniority with the airline PLEASE IM 15 AND I NEED AS MUCH INFO AS POSSIBLE!
@johnmunoz18 Generally pilots start on smaller aircraft and can move up to larger aircraft as they gain more experience and flying hours. Pilots must be trained and be certified on a new aircraft type before they can fly it.
@johnmunoz18 You will move up in aircraft depending on your seniority. The ones who've flown the longest with the airline fly as captain on the 747's and 777's. But before they even hire you you must have already logged many hours in multi-engine turbine aircraft, so you will probably work for either regional carriers or freight carriers before you can qualify for a job with the major airlines.
@johnmunoz18 You're welcome, but the best way to become an airline pilot is to be a pilot in the military. You'll need great grades in school and be physically fit with perfect hearing and eyesight and no underlying health conditions to qualify but if you make it you won't have to pay a fortune for flying lessons and the airlines will consider you more than someone who paid for lessons. You don't have to be a fighter pilot, even flying transports is ok.
@artistgmg Yea man, the next 2 years in high school im trying to get all A and B's i can get those grades now but i slack sometimes, but yea i might just join the military for flying.
@johnmunoz18 You should look into joining the Civil Air Patrol. I am not sure exactly what they do but I know that a lot of teens join as a stepping stone to becoming a pilot in the Air Force. If you join will get to fly in their aircraft and they can also help you with flying lessons. There are local chapters all over the country. Check out gocivilairpatrol. com. I know at least one of the Thunderbird pilots was a CAP cadet (Nicole Malachowski).
@johnmunoz18 You're welcome. I hope you make it to become a pilot. I always dreamed of being one but never did it because of the cost and my hearing is bad too. I wish you the best.
@artistgmg Oh that sucks, there is a senior at my school who wants to be a pilot but he's partially colorblind, he took a test and he cant see purple. But he's done a lot of mentoring to me, but anyways thanks you gave me some useful info :)
@johnmunoz18 Go to flight training, build up hours, get enough hours to apply for a minor/reigonal airline, if you go the military way, you wont worry about reigonal airlines, once you apply, theyll make sure u got the health, the experience, and of course, the attitude. say you get hired, YAY!!! you'll start in the right seat in the least senior aircraft possible, like CRJ, ERJ, B1900D, EMB-120, whatever.as you work there, you'll get upgraded to a diff a/c, right seat, then later the left seat!
@fanofgordon True... Now we can enjoy the current era.. 737s, 767s and 777s... And now the 787.. Beginning of the new era... At least we still have the 747. One day, these will also be history.. So, it's all about enjoying the current types while they're here... I just got to fly in a 727 once back in '92
I like planes and stuff but I've never been able to tell the difference between MD-80, MD-82 and DC-9s .. Only thing I've noticed there are shorter and extended versions...
Aren't they more or less the same aircraft? And the Boeing 717 looked alot like 'em too
@CobraMarty The MD-80 is a DC-9, but it's a DC-9-80! lol That's the only difference, AFAIK. They're just longer. 717 is the same thing, with a different cockpit?
I like this plane, but I can't belive they're still flying in the US, when there are airlines already retiring their MD80's, wich were the improve of these (DC-9).
That was my sisters account. Now i use it okay. I really recommend that you stop talking. I'm a first officer for american eagle with a commercial pilot certification with multi-engine and instrument ratings. i have 500 hours with fixed wing aircraft and over 100 in multi-engine fixed wing aircrafts. I have a FAA First class medical certificate, IFR currency and FCC license. So Shut up, okay you little fool.
My dad flew F-15s back in the day and I know a hell of a lot about aircraft but I don't go around correcting random people. I think someone's a little proud.
oh just stop xdstupidxd at least he has flown a plane unlike you only on flight simulator! WHY you trying to tell a real pilot that he is not a pilot, how would you feel if someone did that to you if you were a pilot. GOD DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!
Actually, a DC-9 is the most popular Airliner for NWA(What will soon be Delta) Because NWAbuys Dc-9's from airlines that don't want the DC-9s, and want newer(but worse) planes.
listen to you, you cant even spell. I was joking around retard. I know it's an international airport. My dad flies 757-300's for Delta. he used to fly the 9 back when it was northwest. "woow your dumb" learn to spell before you call someone else dumb.
@maverick967 I'm not sure about that as I believe that Swissair was the lunch customer for the MD-80. I don't think Northwest ever had the MD-80 in their fleet but I could be wrong.
Yes sir. Swissair was the launch customer. They ordered in 1977 and took delivery in 1980.
As far as md-80s in Northwest's fleet, they did fly them. They acquired them when they merged with Republic in 1986. A320 orders followed shortly after. They had considered buying more in the mid 90's, but rid their fleet of them in the late 90's. The A319 and A320s, along with the DC-9's were exactly what they wanted and needed.
@YULspotter Northwest did in fact retain a small fleet of MD-80 aircraft after its acquisition of Republic Air in the 80's. I don't, however, believe they were the launch customer.

Yep, they still call themselves Northwest even though their new logo says NWA. They probably will keep their name if the merger with Delta goes through. A Delta/NWA merger would create one heck of a big airline (like AF/KLM).
I think Delta is phasing out the 9's by 2014. I'm trying to fly as many DL flights operated by DC-9's as possible before their gone.

Yep, they still call themselves Northwest even though their new logo says NWA. They probably will keep their name if the merger with Delta goes through. A Delta/NWA merger would create one heck of a big airline (like AF/KLM).
