This was the first show that I learned with the MDB, my freshman year. I still have the tuba parts recognized in my head. Yes, Katie Belle was the greatest director of the Million Dollar Band, no offense to the current administration. It was definitely more fun back then.
pretty good on the hand jive but i think my high school did it better but thats my opinion, other then that what a wonderful show i really enjoyed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ugh, when we lost to UT in 1999 it was bad. Fans pissing on the tubas, people throwing cups at us while walking to the sidelines.
Our charter bus ran out of gas coming back from Gatlinburg, three of us volunteered to walk down the interstate to make some calls to get some gas on the bus. It was a cooky-crazy experience.
she was a good director but BAD on discipline as witnessed here by some of the stupid inmature ramblings of some of her former members...you are suppose to represent the university with class and dignity something you guys obviously knew nothing about with her there...very disgraceful to the university
Dude- I was in MDB in 1990- I can and will ALWAYS remember going to Tennessee, marching through the tunnel to our seating- and being spit on by UT fans. A lot of people don't believe it. I also remember Big AL being escorted off the field by security because he was throwing oranges on the field and doing belly flops on them lol.
our band did this we played greased lightening, summer nights, hand jive and we go together lol best show we ever did! lol yay that was my rookie yr! this yr were doing sumthing totally awesomeer!
Katie-Belle did NOT just let us run wild. We were all adults and we knew it was up to us to represent the University of Alabama right. Sure we drank and had a great time, but that does not mean that we ran wild. We produced some of the greatest shows and everybody knows it. I'm glad I'm not in it anymore because if I wanted to march drum corps I would join a corps, which I did but that's besides the fact.
Yeah, especially when they were throwing beer cups and other hard crap at us Tubas while waiting for our half-time.
Now THAT was a really cool view, from the middle of the field, wall of orange, splinter of Crimson and White. That game, in 1998, Ms. Scott wasn't going to give up like everybody else. I remember we had to play our hearts out that day. "Get 'em Smokey"
I marched this show my sophmore year. God I hated MDB, I did it two years, to see if y2 would b bettr than y1. Sadly, it was worse.
I remember we had to use yellow gloves! I also remember my section, mellophones, getting split all over tarnation. F. U. KLIFF! Grease, the worst was those stupid cars that cost several grand a piece! The dancers were all men! THE UT crowd liked it though!
I marched in that show my freshman year. I remember when we were done with Rookie Camp and then we had to go outside where the Vets were and we all played Yea Alabama together for the first time. It was pure magic.
It doesn't matter if the show sucked or not, we had the greatest times of our lives.
And Katie Belle was the craziest, most amazing persons I've ever come encountered with. People are just jealous that they aren't one of Kathryn's students. I am proud to be one. ROLL TIDE!
the band may of been good but there was also TONS of discipline problems..she was a good director but pretty much let em run wild...and that is something that doesn't happen now..
K. Scott was a lot of fun. Run wild? We took kegs on our buses- not sure if the folks in the band do that anymore. By the time we got to Tennessee we had to crawl out. A lot of us managed to do a show half drunk at the 1990 fiesta bowl. Lot's of screwing going on too- awesome. lol Ozello was a cool cat back then- not sure how he is since he took control.
av8rbama, I am a music major at UA and march in the MDB as well. I can promise the MDB is doing just fine without Kathryn Scott. We're getting invites to play at BOA National Champs and even China. The tradition lives on. I think I speak of all the current members when we say we're tired of hearing about how much better the band "was." Come to a game, and listen.
I marched in this show. Sadly, the MDB isn't what it once was under Kathryn Scott. Things like Grease, Phantom, Southern Gospel, and the 9/11 show are what made the MDB stand out. Shows like this were so outrageous, now it's just any other drum corps style show.

Marching band is supposed to be fun.
So put that in your back pocket.

I remember the guys who were hired to dance, as the T-Birds...
The Tuba Section called them "The Flamin' Sistas". They were cool though.
