Another World during this period was unique even for soaps back in the day. Lemay Harding, a playwrite, thought so much of words and character and wrote these realistic and often leasurely scenes that seemed so real, that one woud forget these weren't real people. In today's soaps we talk about dopplegangers and mind altering and the such. Back then a baptism gown could spark a story point and be interesting. I would watch this any day over what we have to watch nowdays.
Just wonderful -- a time when all the soaps were in this PRICELESS format. Unique and beautiful openings/closings, people looked like adults, didn't have "come f-uck me" written all over them, characters were friends and actually depended on each other, scenes took place in people's homes instead of in a pub drinking or talking on cellphones or looking at a laptop, conversations were simple and heartwarming..... These shows were just simply gems back then and I will miss them to my dying day.
@BackstrokingFly Once you got to know the characters, you were hooked. You tuned in day after day without fail. When soaps stopped focusing on characters and turned their attention to stunts and gimmicks, the audience dropped away and never went back. Stunts and gimmicks can be enjoyable in moderation, but without interesting, believable characters, all the CGI in the world will not hold viewers.
@saynotoursoap Totally agree. I remember watching in the days before spoilers and overt foreshadowing. It was a shock when someone died, a surprise if someone arrested. Trials were nail-biters. Watching an affair play out actually made you feel a little guilty. Oh how I miss those days.
Wow - this is just awesome. So few episodes before 1979 exist now. This is a true gem.
Clarice seemed a lot less of an airhead back in '76. By the time she hooked up with Larry Ewing, she was pretty darn useless -- but I like her in her scene with Mac.
I also liked Gil's frank warning to Ada not to come down on Rachel like a ton of bricks -- as if Ada or Rachel every listen to advice like that! LOL.
this is so real ada's kitchen should be in the soap opera television institute i know thy'res no such place there should be, love the intro to this clip the sponsor made it seem like the intro to a soap on radio, classic i remember coming home from school and the talk was all about bay city like they were real people and perhaps in a way they were i spent twenty five years with bay city's villians and heros then rush dinner ands watch.
this story scared the hell out of me when i was a kid...the body was rocky the chaffeur and crazy sven then kidnapped rachel and kept her in a basement for what seemed like months...i remember the body in a garbage bag sunk beneath the boats...pretty gruesome.
@citychicken actually it was the cory pump house but your right about sven excellently portrayed by roberts blossom his presense explained the sven chrachter all by itself.
@MattFrame Very well stated! I think he resented actors who didn't give his scripts the due reverence he thought they deserved. The fact is, Jacquie Courtney WAS an excellent, appealing actress. She emoted with her eyes and connected with her audience in a very special way. The character lacked the intensity and passion Courtney gave her after the actress was fired.
Gil McGowan is Ada's husband. He is played by the late Dolph Sweet, who was superb as sweet natured Gil and the evil Harry Constable on Edge of Night. Gil is the father to Ada's daughter Nancy. Gil's son Tim embezzled stock from Steven Frame and fled Bay City to South America. Gil leaves in 1977 to reconcile with Tim, and they are both killed in an accident. Ada becomes involved with Charlie Hobson later.
Ada to the rescue (as usual). I still am angry that the writer & producer fired Virginia Dwyer (Mary Matthews), but at least the hour show starred these other fine actors and actresses to help ease the pain of losing Dwyer, Courtney, Reinholt, Susan Sullivan (Lenore), and the Lucases (Sam & LaHoma).
Harding Lemay has been very vocal about Dwyer, Courtney and Reinholt not being the most professional actors on the set. Courtney and Reinholt took their popularity too far, and started to criticize the other actors - even though Courtney would write her lines on her wrists. Reinholt was very difficult to work with. When Dwyer was killed off, the actor who played her husband Jim Matthews thanked Lemay in person - she never knew her lines and made rehearsal and filming a nightmare for him.
I see your point. They COULD have recast Mary, but Jim being a widower, it made him available to Liz, Helen, and Beatrice ! Helen was so classy, I missed her when she moved to Washington. I guess I was just so spoiled growing up with the Matthews before the Corys took center stage. It WAS painful to us fans who were so accustomed to those 3. And I ached when Alice lost BOTH Steven and Mary in the same year. But it did allow Alice to seek comfort adopting Sally and those 2 bonding.
Thank you, thank you. You have shared a precious gift with all of Another World's fans from the 1970s. I have childhood memories of all these storylines. Better yet, you have provided a full Harding Lemay scripted episode from beginning to end. What a treat to see such cohesive storytelling with one person plotting the fate of all these characters. The icing on the cake it the wonderful acting ensemble - so good to see B. McKinsey and D. Watson together on You Tube.
What an awesome christmas gift, I would love to see ANY classic Days or AW that you have. Any chance of you having an episode of Somerset? I would love to see how it compared to AW :)

The scenes were much longer in the 70's. It actually gave you time to get to know the characters.
