Thanks all for the great comments. Still my favorite fish, but been moving on to views now. Still breeding infrequently but only with their offspring. These blues have both passed away unfortunately. There legacy lives on in some incredible blue gene breeders however!
just seen baby 2 inches long for sale in local fish shop Bournemouth UK for £30 each . seems a lot of money for young fish but looking at the posts on youtube i really want to get some. but cant afford that at the moment.
I got 2 baby jacks for 3.98$ each is that a good price and wat size tank do i need for them and are there any other cichlids that would go well with them will put video of them soon!
@horselovermkdm u will eventually need a 55 gal if they get big, they get along well with green terrors, texas, convicts, firemouths, and sometimes red devil cichlids, just provide hising spots =)
how do u sex them ? ive had mine for about 4 months now he's 4" and still dont no wot it is ! i could vent it but is there an easier way ? plz help i want to find it a mate,,,,check him out on my vids
what kind of plants do you have? because i read that they need "hardy" plants cause they burrow and can attack the plant roots, so was wondering what you have in there
i have a 55 gallon aquarium. i want to put a jack dempsey in there..but i want him to have tankmates.... ive heard a few ideas from people.. (1 jack d. 2 firemouths, 2 female convicts) ( 2 jack d.'s, and 2 firemouths) i like the first 1 but am worried about aggression.. does any1 have any stocking ideas?? ps.... my tank has two 70 gallon biowheel filters on it. thats why i am considering the bioload that i am.
JD's are a handful. Put a 1 inch JD in with my 2 inch Oscar and he became the king of the tank. Bringing back the JD because he's causing too much stress for my Oscar.
Ive been thinking about getting one for my 75. I was wondering in every video Ive seen they look great but seem a little lazy. Do Jack Dempseys just move about the bottom of the tank or do they swim all over the tank?
EBJD...though I have never had one. but the jack is my favorite out of the 2...an EBJD is just a brighter colored jack...The jacks have a way more fun personality than a green terror and most GTs these days arent even that colorful
hey can you explain to me the diffrence between an ebjd and a jd??? beside the color like is it a diffrent spicie or is the coloring like a luck thing when its born??
its a recessive gene, like gingers. i hear that they are usually killed or eaten by the normal fry early on in their life. they are also more vulnerable to disease. sort of like down syndrome. thats what ive heard, both ones ive had died within three months.
You would think that down here in Florida (closer to their natural region and breeding facilities) that they'd be somewhat cheaper. Nope. Depending on size they still range from $18-$35 for a 1" fry and usually around $25 per fish on average. The local shop I've gone to for years (they are really good) has regular JD's for $1.50 from 1"-2". Their price for EBJDs which have to be ordered (assuming their vendors have any available) and cost $27 for a 1". I've seen full grown EBJDs sell for $100+.
yeah it sucks up here. the pet store i always go to had about 5 electrics about 1". they were priced up around $50. i wanted one but not that bad, lol.
HELP!!!!! My electric blue Jack's gill was ripped in a fight. Do gills grow back? I know fins and scales do. But the one side of his face dosnt stand out as much as the other side. He seems like he's ok. Its not an open wound, it healed up. But it just dosnt look like its going to grow back. the part of the gill im talking about is that blue like tissue that moves in and out in the gill opening. All I see is red gill under it now when he breathes. Anyone know?
I'm not sure if it will or not, they are pretty tough fish so it wil probably be ok, but you might want to get a separat tank since it is more vulnerable now.
Thanks. I have an empty 55 gallon in my basement. I just scored another electric blue, and 3 other Dempseys with the blue-gene. So now I have 2 electric blues and 3 blue gene Dempseys. Its breeding time, lol. Hopefully one of the electric blues mates with one of the blue gene's. Btw, the guy that sold me the Dempseys told me that it will grow back but it will take a while, and the part of the gill that was damaged was the vaulve. Its a layer of skin over the gill that pushes water out of the gil
hmm probably because theres more than 1 adult male in there theyll shred eachother lol i got my male and female couple and they love eachother except at feeding sometimes lol
It's a freshwater fish. I'll admit, they're outrageously expensive for a larger quality dempsey (if you can even find one) but if you spend 20-25 buck a piece on 5-10, and grow em up for a couple years, it's affordable. You can sell a couple later to make up for the cost too. You'll hopefully get 1 or 2 out of ten that look decent. More if you deal with a good breeder.
No,whoever told you that useless information needs to be shot.
Genetically they are weaker and more susceptible to worms and hole in the head.
They take a lot longer to grow that regular Jack Dempseys as they are born smaller. They look like runts when born. But given the right environment they live just as long as regular jd's.
brandonsexywhitaker they grow to about 20cm in an aquarium.
And before anyone decides to give me the thumbs down, consider i line breed eb jack dempseys and other fish.
I do regular water changes and mix up their diet. Mostly the Hikari Gold pellets (which since I've been using, haven't had any bloat problems at all) and then occasionally brine shrimp, mosquito larvae, or Krill.
Make sure to pick out a dempsey with a good head and body shape when they're young. Even at an 1" to 2" you can tell the difference between a good one and a bad one. Stay away from ones with bad eyes or a hook shaped nose. And make sure that they are eating before you buy em!
your blue dempseys are very pretty is there anything special you do to make them look so good, im getting one soon so i want to know if there is anything i can do to make them look nice
I bought a 1" electric blue female for $30. I plan to let her get bigger then intro her to my male regular JD that is 4". Is that too much of a size difference?
My females didn't start breeding until they were 3 inches. One of them bred with a male that was 6+, so it could work. However, it's tough to sex them at 1 inch...I hope you really do have a female blue. They're usually a bit stockier and not quite as nice lookin' as the males. I hope it all goes well with your breeding project!
Price varies on where you live, but you should'nt pay more than 30 bucks a fish when its only an inch or 2. Blues vary so much in quality (shade of blue dark or light, body and head shape, sex, etc)it's hard to put a price on em. And they have a high fatality rate when they're young (1-3 inches). The blue on the left is almost 8 inches now and is near show quality. Should go for quite a bit :)
Juvies or 30 bucks and adult 60
