Absolutely FREAKIN AMAZING ! I am a Max user but lightwave has always fascinated me especially the renderer .I wonder why dont these big shot render companies ( Cebas , Mental Ray etc) develop something like that? Also why is it that Maya is considered to be industry standard ?( nothing against Maya) when lightwave has always been the most artist friendly software ever .
@Galavya41 Maya is industry standard because it's the most open software out there, when you work for big companies you will use the interface of Maya but around 80% or more of the tools will be written in house. Lightwave and Max are open but still very ostile for programmers, i am an artist so you should ask a programmer about that but this is the story.
@Galavya41 i was a certified trainer for Lightwave so i know it really well, it's a very good software but i am sorry to say that when it comes to horse power there is no limit to what you can do with Maya and some good programmers.
@Carlovfx I completely agree with you , Maya does have an upper hand in that department , but I was thinking more in the lines of the Home Studio, with a small team of animators who handle a variety of things in the production pipeline not just animation . Light wave gives them rock solid performance and big studio level tools. Take this rendering engine for example which according to me is way ahead of the default engine and the really bad implementation of mental ray Max offers.
@Galavya41 Big Studio level tools? Try to tell to a professional animator to animate in Lightwave, try to tell to a professional FX Artist to pass from Houdini to LW :P
LW is very good for something, but not for everything, like other softwares are. I hate MAX but it is centuries ahead of LW on a general point of view.
This camera feature is really good and i love the render engine of LW but this is not a reason to buy it anyway.
If you are on low budget and you want to go fast then LW is ok.
@Carlovfx Actually I was referring to the rendering engine, I had to spend a lot to purchase a third party engine as what max offers is not good enough , almost all studios I I know of purchase a third party renderer , other plugins cost money too but its the rendering plugin which cost the most , I think Autodesk ought to resolve this by including something like VRay or FinalRender inside Max and Maya ( the Mental Ray implementation in both Max & Maya is very poor so thats no good)
@Galavya41 Mental Ray in Max is simply not Mental Ray, is a shame. In Maya the implementation of MR is perfect and you get it with the basic package, exactly like Mental Ray in XSI is also perfectly implemented. Big studios use Renderman, PRMan, Mental Ray with Maya.
Hmm... strange, I thought they did this in Motion Builder on Avatar. Didn't know they used LW10 as well.
Anyways, it's really nice, however, I'm not much impressed and certainly this wouldn't turn me over to the LW camp. I can implement this in MB or even 3ds Max.
Sure, the iterative renderer is great, but it has always been in LW.
@loocasduber They did use motion builder, lightwave was used primarily for modeling. I would imagine, now that lightwave 10 is out, it would be the prefered software to drive a virtual camera because its real-time renderer quality rivals that of motion builder.
It's cool and all but any real lw user has been using fprime for YEARS . Now that it's intergrated isn't bad but it still won't solve the 3rd party post process plugin issue. Nevertheless i simply hope they got dynamics working properly after breaking it in lw 9.0. Lw is still good IMO but 10 has to be great to get me interested. Newtek droped the ball with there dumb hardware based products.
@xevious2501 They're using Bullet for dynamics. Bullet is the same dynamics core used in Euphoria physics, the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, and even some University Physics Simulators.
I'm animator and LW was my first 3D software I found in 1999, I fond of with
this very handfull 3D Package with cool render engine and coolest modeling system, but always dreamed about better dynamics and better animation(rigging system) tools!
I don't think it will be difficult for Newtek group to make it ,after such fantastic
I'm not surprised! Next Gen.. had to come from a company that cut it's teeth on the AMIGA! Well done Newtek!
When I went on to one of the cinematography "lists" and opened up a discussion on Virtual Cinematography, they balked at the idea that it could be done in real-time (in the year 2010) on a desktop. After all Avatar had a truckload of equipment right?
can't afford that kind of camera, but... that OGL and VPR seem very promising - note that the rendering area has a very high resolution (like 1600x1000 ?).
youtube.com/watch?v=QwoSP6cHLVU
that's absolutely blazing fast and it is even faster these days ?
This did send goosebumps down my spine. Sad to see that this version of the video does not contain the Avatar stuff. I understand that it is related to legal stuff, but still... The Avatar stuff showed a scene with over 1000 individual objects, realtime fog, transparency etc with buttersmooth camera movements in OGL... on a MacPro laptop. Sick stuff.
This does show how well the developmments have gone regarding LW, but it doesn't show how well it scales with the hardware, so to speak.

Geez im afraid that 3d animation is going to get easier and easier. Just like making movies, everyone can do it now. Same with animation.
I wouldn't be surprised if there will be buttons to just do things automatically. The skill will not be as necessary.

Does anyone know what CPU and GPU(s) were used for this?
allleafs 1 year ago
@allleafs Its a custom rig used only in industry. 20+ cores of CPU. Any names or specs I gave you would be useless without release info.
However, for comparison, the iterative renderer has been demoed running a 5.8million poly scene on a Core2 Duo 2.4GHz with a Radeon 4 series card.
JordaanM 1 year ago
OK, But I think it hasn´t all the best than the Full CORE Tech.
Where the Instances tools, the FX Composer Panel, Modeler and Layout are in one interface? Is full SDK?
I think they need more time to upgrade this soft.
