I love this video, not only because of the music, but I love pocket watches and always wear one. I have a collection too, but no where as much as this one.
@538921 Thanks for looking, since retiring, I have been working on watches for about 3 years. Started when I inherited a 1798 Verge Fusee, English made pair case watch. Had it running for a while until hairspring broke, still trying to make a hairspring. But this has been real interesting and keeps me out of trouble.
@GTweed0605 I have been collecting old USSR Molnija watches amongest others.Admire them that can repair them, they are so complicated and delicate.Always wear a pocket watch and waistcoat myslef. And I am also retired.
Making hairsprings is possible with a row of high precision rolling mills and the proper know-how, but the mills are expensive and you'd need more than a couple.
Go to a company called "British Precision Springs" They still sell hairsprings in packs of 10 like the old days, you just need to find a similar strength spring and shape it like the original, as i'm sure the original had very few coils compared to a modern hairspring.
@kisetsushin I was able to make a hairspring for my verge fusee by taking an old english lever fusee hairspring, cut out some of the coils in the center, pinned the collet, then spread out the remaining coils. Watch will run but hairspring is too strong, So more work to do someday. thanks for the info, may order some springs
are any of them bw raymond elgins? I have one bw raymond and its beautiful, I also have a ps bartlett waltham 18s by fogg, its beautiful. You have a very nice collection, I often wind all of mine up[ like this just to hear them all ticking away, I feel calm listening to the watches. Thanks for sharing your collection.
@angie4josh I have several BW Raymonds, a few GM Wheelers, these have more jewels, usually 15 to 19, and not as worn out as the 7 jewels. Hang on to them, not being made anymore.
@gamaroy "Gold Filled" (also called "Gold Overlay" or "Rolled Gold") is a process whereby high heat/pressure are used to bond a thick layer of gold to a base metal (Sterling Silver or Jeweler's Brass). Gold Fill will not tarnish, turn green, or wear off and can be worn as "every-day" jewelry. "Gold Plate" (Gold plated Brass or other base metal) and "Gold Vermeil" (Gold plated Sterling Silver) are both made using an electroplating process. Wears quickly and will tarnish.
@gamaroy I have several KW KS, two that are in rare pair cases. I rarely see pair case American made watches, most pair cases are English fusee type watches, have a few of those as well.
A pair case watch is two cases. Inside holds the movement and outer case wraps around the inside case. A lot of old english verge fusee watches are like this, I have several. Some of my other videos show pair case english watches. I have other watch videos on youtube if your interested. Verge fusee watches can have several cases, I have seen as many as 6 cases total on one watch.
@gamaroy almost, gold filled lasts a little longer though because i like to call it a sort of Oreo, because the center is usually brass, and two wedges of gold are hammered onto the brass.
where can you find watches like these in such good condition? I've gone to all the antique shops in my area and i cant find any quite as good. and is the bottom farthest to the right just a movement?
@gamaroy Most all of these were obtained on ebay. One is just a movement in a storage case. I have been collecting full watches, movements, cases, etc repairing and restoring watches for a couple of years.
@GTweed0605 thats what i want to do some day but im just 13 right now. at least i can collect them but most of mine are just dollar watches from the 20's through 60's. i like early wristwatches as well.
Hardly, I just wound them all up to shoot this video. I do wind each one ever few month to exercise and keep them running. But since these are antiques I do not want to wear them out. I have a collection of English Key Wind type watches that I rarely run since all the parts are hand made and hard to replace. Thanks for watching.
i where mine with a double 1911 silver chain that my grandad left me. the thing i love about getting a new one is opening up the case seeing if all the balancing stones are there and looking up the serial number on the internet.
@sammyb1929 I do carry one on occasion. Goal is to restore them and hopefully they will stay that way. To many are being taken apart, cases sold for silver and gold.
Look on ebay, I bet you can find a watch like the one you had. All of these I have I bought on ebay. Good luck and thanks for looking. It has been fun restoring these old time pieces.
I started out with Verge Fusee PW, I inherited a 1798, a family watch that came over with an ancestor from Ireland in 1818. I have video of it running, craftsmanship on these old watches is amazing. Unfortunately the hairspring broke and I have made one, but watch does not run well. I have found working on the old elgin and waltham watches a little more successful as parts are more interchangeable. The old fusee watches are all hand made and parts have to be hand made. thanks for looking
Your right parts are more available for both Waltham and Elgin ! Getting back to the E.howards the workmanship in them is wonderfull. Parts are hard to get ,and my watch repair man ,made a balance staff for one of them. He has cleaned and brought back all my Howards to very accurate timepieces! All my E.Howards are keywind, keyset except one!!! The E.Howard pocket watch I wear on a regular basis, keeps time to within 1 minute a week!!!, circa 1868-1869!! me! Stu. ps. Time does indeed fly!
you extremely nice collection thanks for sharing.
