This reminds me of the time we had to record a demo for a various artists album. We were recording in our singer's place, so we had no drums. We improvised by having our drummer sit on the side of the bed, put two chairs around him gave him two sticks to play with. The bass drum was barefoot stomping on the marble floor.

Needless to say, we got a chance on the album, and played on an actual drum set on the master. ;)

I almost had to laugh when someone commented that if you bounce a stick then that does not make you a good drummer. Whether playing a drum with a stick or with a hand, playing through with excessive impact gets you this result:

Carpal tunnel, tendonitis and other hard-to-cure wrist, finger and arm problems.

The best cure is prevention. You can hit hard, but snap the stick back or bounce it, just like what Jim Chapin, Freddie Gruber or Joe Morello used to explain in their videos. Play safe!
