Having seen some of the comments below, I'd like to offer an objective view. Jim Hall has been for 50 years a giant of jazz. That being said, in this cut, he falls way below his earlier stuff. His meter is off about half the time, his right hand is flailing and imprecise compared to earlier stuff, and his comping is thin and weak. For a true sense of his greatness, check out earlier stuff. If you guys are still playing this well when your in your late 70's, my hat is off to you.
Kirk hammett is actually one of the best metal guitarists ever! Idiot! Jim hall is still amazing. Cut him a break though he's like 85! and better than you'll ever be!
Krik hammet sucks! Have you ever listened to for example the solo in Whiskey in the Jar. Hetfield is great, damn tight. But Hammet isn't good for anything!
i kinda agree with dirkworld in most part, just because Kirk's band is commercially huge doesn't make him a great guitarist, he ain't as good as most people think, there are several obscure metal players that can outplay him anytime like Uli Jon Roth or John Petrucci.
anyways, jazz guitarists are usually the most advanced in terms of ability
But getting to freakguitars comment. you know music is journey and when I was younger I dug hendrix and bb king and guess what? That style was cool but easy to play. but, I heard Wes Montgomery Smoking at the
the half note, and tried to play on the blues track and couldn't hang. and that f'd me up because I could play some blues and thats when I got hooked on Jazz playing.
I've played jazz guitar for 30 years. If there is anything wrong with Jim Hall's playing I am willing to bet it is the technology at fault and not him. I bet that if you were at that gig it would have sounded awesome.
this is a great lesson in jazz rhythm comping . Jim is so relaxed its funny. He is the root of modern jazz guitar playing. I hope any guitar players out there will pick up on his brilliance. Thanks for posting this great clip.
kirk hammett is at best a mediocre guitarist. just because his band is huge doesnt make him good. his playing is very tight in rhythm but his solos are a slopfest, disconnected and rooted in nothing. he always plays out of scale and his not choices and intervals are rarely exciting. of course he has some excellent things, but most of his stuff is re-hash.
wow...this whole page of comments is a dickfest. just because one guy says "Jim Hall is lame", you all have to try to bash him down? he's entitled to his opinion, ignorant or not. grow up, people. seriously.
getting bashed for a stupid opinion is a good thing Norris... i have been bashed b4 but then, i looked at myself and learned something. Its all a learning process..
Freakguitar, The fact that would even check out this video is a good thing. You are obviously new to jazz music. Go study music. I would recommend Scott Henderson, Pat metheny
Allan Holdsworth. Any of these guys would cut your metal gods to shreds with little effort.
i don`t think its ignorant, maybe a bit "premature". but i know lots of jazz guitar players, that are interesting, but i couldnt find anything in hall`s playing that is really really unique and interesting. maybe you guys help me out a bit :S
my comment sounded a bit harsh, but thats the way i express myself, soo.. :) i dont say he sucks, but to be considered as one of the best jazzers, hmm... sounds a bit overrated to me. (like the guitar players i mentioned in my comment before).
thats fair enough, i definitely agree with your evaluation of the other 3 guitar players, other than santana being world class. i guess the point im tryin to make is that theres a lot of great players out there, and in i think the term 'best' is used far too generously and inappropriately. to me however, jim hal\l is 'one of the best' which to me merely means that he has reached a certainly level of mastery over the instrument.
i guess the way i see the term 'one of the best' is that it is a quantitive benchmark which isnt limited by numbers. when people start using one of the best as a exclusive term in which only ten people in the world can be classified as such, they are certainly doing a disservice to the hundreds of other amazing guitar players out there.
After checking out your profile its easy to see why you think this way. You don't understand harmony, counterpoint or improv, how could you see what's unique and interesting? Can you simultaneously execute new melodies you're hearing in your head over tunes that are constantly modulating? Thats a completely different type of chops that requires far more preparation than building speed. Please go to a jam session and get your ass handed to you. You're completely ignorant to the subject at hand.
im gonna study jazz next year at academy. i know enough about harmony and all that shit, so pls, stfu.
i have built chops and a good technique, i play metal, ok! but i also play fusion stuff and will improve in this direction. you are one of those typical jazzers that are assholes and only play with head.
you probably dont know anything about jazz standards or stuff like that.
im sorry that i attacked your little world.. go wank to pics from jim hall. bye.
If you really are going to study then you will find out soon enough and you're going to be ashamed of your former arrogant self. Harmony and all that shit? Give me a break. You aren't a competent jazz musician and you come in and bash an all time great. I'm not the guy going around leaving arrogant bullshit comments about things I know nothing about. When you learn about comping you will begin to see the genius of Jim. There's just no guitarist who has contributed more in that department.
Premature, yes. Ignorant. Certainly. I'd guess you're young, which isn't an insult, just a guess. Check out a CD called undercurrent, which is simply Jim Hall and Bill Evans in a duo setting. According to Bill Evans, Jim Hall was one of the greatest of the post-bop guitarists. It's always a good idea to think before posting. Advice I don't always take, but perhaps you should tattoo it on your ass.
Metaphorically speaking, I almost genuflect every time I hear Jim Hall play. He is The Master. I had the pleasure of hearing him several yimes back in the '70s (with Don Thompson on bass and Terry Clarke on drums) at Bourbon Street in Toronto, the club where "Jim Hall Live" (1975) was recorded. Wonderful gigs!
The changes are those of You Stepped Out Of A Dream.
Jim Hall is the greatest!

Hendrix and BB King's stuff aint that easy to play, tho i agree Wes is more complex

Try playing that at his age --you'll never do it because
senility sets in early man! Fantastic.
What tune is this? sounds like You Stepped Out of A
Dream.

This is how Hall plays sometimes low volume mostly
acoustic -- which is great . try that a Jam Session.
