In light of this isn't death a heavy handed sentence? Firstly, there is no comparison between the genocide in Bangladesh and the atrocities in Kashmir. Apart from that, the Kashmiri rallying cry is "Azadi" and not "we're Pakistani". Pakistani atrocities in Kashmir are equally bad and the people there are caught between a rock and a hard place. Besides, there is no guarantee that Kashmiri Hindus and other minorities will be treated fairly in Kashmir if India leaves.

Besides, the brand of fundamentalist Islam being imported into Kashmir in the name of freedom fighting is very unlike the traditional, liberal Sufiistic Islam of that region. Besides, there's no legal ambiguity in the accession of Kashmir to India in 1947. I agree that Indian forces there are heavy handed and personally I hope a referendum is carried out and the people get more autonomy, but this issue can't be compared with Israel-Palestine or Bangladesh.

Besides, the whole state of Jammu and Kashmir enjoys the greatest autonomy of all the states in India. It has it's own flag and people from other states aren't allowed to buy property there. Demographically only Kashmir has a muslim majority while the rest of the state is Hindu and Buddhist dominated so I don't see how you can argue that the majority is out of power. Besides, India has done a lot more to promote democratic institutions there than Pakistan.

pakistan did look after the refugees -- all three million who fled across -- despite the enormous financial stress it put on the economy. do i agree with pak's involvement in afghan.not 100% and i'm not blinded by nationalism to tell the truth from the lies. that's a quality one rarely sees from those living across the pakistan's eastern border to whom everything done in the name of mother india can't possibly be faulted.

I just commented that the BSF ought to be disciplined and better trained so that they don't kill and maim innocent civilians. India is a country with a dizzying array of opinions on everything from religion to foreign policy, but on this issue, I don't see how you can fault a country trying its best to protect its borders. That's one thing that anyone in any country, regardless of ideology, rally's around.

You can probably talk about welcoming the destitute in countries like the US or Europe, but look at the neighbors we've got. If this were Scandinavia, I wouldn't mind opening the borders and spending my holidays in Pakistan or Bangladesh, but surely things aren't that ideal....especially in light of the Mumbai attacks and the fact that there are groups eager to kill Indians in large numbers.

The vast majority of Indians, who are North Indians, are distinguished by a mitochondrial haplogroup that shares genetic similarities with the people of the Mohenjo-daro and Harappa civilizations- of which the Indus river valley was their putative Urheimat. Most Indians, who demographic wise are North Indians, are a light to medium brown-skin complexion (the state of UP alone has more than a fifth of our population).

Travel into the hinterland, particularly the Aryan Hindu 'cowbelt' and you will see what I am talking about. As well as states like Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Gujarat, which share Indus-valley predicated cultures. Even in the south of India, the majority of the 'upper' castes are light complexioned. Dear Tupac I am a North Indian n I have traveled n worked in almost all parts of India. If u step into the road u will find that majority of us don't have light skin. Same is the case in our neighbouring countries where ppl think they r white, but when they r in countries like UK, Russia etc. they realize that they r black. hobgoblin, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I too have travelled extensively, and have lived in seven cities spanning the length and breadth of the country. My experience is that barring south and south-central India which are in the demographic minority, most Indians are of a light to medium-dark brown. People to our west do have delusions, despite the fact that in Pakistan for instance, 65% of the population lives in Punjab west of the Indus or in Karachi- and are dark brown as we are.
