@donhoren i don't know how to overclock any processor yet but i'm currently researching it how to, ,, i asked this question inorder for me to be safe when overclocking any of my hardware coz i'm a newbie... and my first time building a system myself. i was just a little confuse, coz some forums says 850 is enough to run an sli, yet some relly suggested strongly that 1200w is the right psu for that...
One thing I have to say about this power supply. It has higher ripple than you would like. This is going to have affects on a high end computer trying to overclock to the max. If you intend to say push your ram or cpu to it's limits, then you might not be able to due to mediocre ripple suppression.
@MiniExtreme I'm talking about the ripple of a power supply. If you really want to know the effects of bad ripple, I suggest you read an article about it. Send me a pm if you're really interested and can't find an article yourself.
Also, if you want a thorough review of this power supply, I would recommend going to johnny guru's website.
Efficiency is not as important as everyone thinks. Just because a power supply is gold efficiency, does not mean it's good.
PCWizKid, Is it posible to over power a system with to high of a power supply? P.S. is there also a good way to squeeze some more life out of my Ubuntu system? (without buying more hardware.) SPECS: CPU: 2.66 GHz* Intel Pentium 4 Memory: 512MB PC2700 DDR-SDRAM HDD: 120GB WD 1 CD-ROM Drive GPU: NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 (64 MB) (W/ DVI Connector)*Generic Version* The gpu is a generic version that came with the system (NVIDIA Chipset)
@JeremyB796 No an oversized PSU will do no damage to a system that doesn't need it, the PSU will only draw what it needs. The benefits of having a higher wattage PSU is that it gives you room to grow.
Ubuntu doesn't need a powerful system to run, IMO I don't think you would see any performance boost by upgrading...but if you wanted to maybe increase your ram a little.
@BIGDADDYF50 lol dude the zalman i have is 3 years old without any problems. even with a 2xhd5970 and 1xgtx580 monsters it will not let me down. :) i think i got lucky then
@MiniExtreme yah sure i can not use 5 gpu (at the same time in 1 game or programm however) 4 = maxs current software but yes you can have 5 its no problem, so 1 gpu of the ati hd5970 gets offline or i use the 5 gpu for youtube vids or windows depending offcourse how and what.. but again i need the pshyx and thats not the gpu but a hardware inside the gtx. so you get the picture i think.
A modular power supply is meant to have as few non-modular cables as possible... why would most of the cables be non-modular! They're not even the skinny cables he showed at the start!
Is a single 12 V rail better or multiple , does it even matters if both psu's got the same total power like 70a. for example the antec true power quattro series with multiple rails or this psu with a single rail?
@hehehe929 Umm a PII x4 only uses 95W-125W whats WAY more important to know is all the other stuff you're running esp the video card! 300W is enough to run a system with a PII x4 if you're just running onboard video while 550W probably isn't enough if you're running a big ass video card like a 5970! That video card is going to draw the most power, way more than the CPU will.
@Teldara hes never had those ads that are videos are the beginning of the actual video. they're usually about stupid shit anyway. as long as its not like that stupid nbs website, where you have to choose which ad you wanna watch first.
I had coolermaster 1000w pro silent, now i have corsair 750w,but if you look at "gold" corsair offers more quality and more power, tho more cost to the end user..
corsair has quality in low cost power supplys like 550w,650w..but hey coolermaster is not a bad PSU...
@AndreaFranchitti Well true, but silence is golden. The Corsair has a louder 140mm fan. The Cooler Master has a ultra silent 135mm fan which is important to me.
@PCWizKid wasn't the bigger the fan the lower the noise?
the fan noise on the corsair is from 24 dB to 30 dB, while the CM fan noise is from 20 dB to 40 dB.. at full load the corsair is 10 dB quieter but at lower loads is only 4 dB louder
@MultiPocos Well I think you shoulda spend more on a Cooler for your CPU so that you can overclock or you coulda got an x4 and they're starting to get cheaper now
@MultiPocos Thats a nice solid system for decent gaming. You might be able to unlock the CPU and get even more power. The only thing holding you back is the video card since its not a 1GB model for playing in high res maxed out. But it will do fine.
