what made waldner marvelous is his controlling ability.. it seems like he just puts the ball right in. :) he not only just hits, he controls.. and many of his fantastic points were of short balls and amazing control... that ability I think is the most important in this game.

Alot of pressure on Ma here. He is expected to beat this 38 year old Waldner. But Waldner is super relaxed, after all he already has Olympic gold and silver at this stage and Ma had squat. Liu Guliang (coach) Can't point fingers because Waldner cleaned his clock 3-0 in the 2000 Sidney Olympics .

yeah back then Ma Lin was behind on using reverse backhand. After 04 Olympic, all penhold player on the Chinese national team had to master it or get replaced. Just take a look how Wang hao and ma lin are now. Two penhold players world #1,2

Waldner was able to avenge his unlucky defeat to Ma Lin in the 45th '99 WTC. In that event, Waldner destroyed Ma Lin and then started to be complacent and let Ma Lin came back. He was thinking about playing Liu Guoliang in the final and fell asleep, causing the worst defeat in his career. Had he not given Ma Lin mercy, he would have won defended his '97 WTC title.
