Michael got a LOT better at being a frontman in the 90s. I think often that seeming 'awkward' (or even 'an asshole') is just chronic shyness. Thom Yorke has the same problem, just because he's not running around hugging people, grinning, schmoozing everyone, doesn't necessarily mean he's a dick.
Stipe looks like he's fallen out of bed from an Egon Schiele painting into this video. He was lazing in bed til noon with his young harpsichord playing muse. And that's a few crumbs of sachetorte in between his teeth.
@catnip213 in any interview i've seen of Michael, he seems so sweet- there's also a blog page dedicated to R.E.M. songs, and Michael took the time to answer tons and tons of questions from fans, and gave really good, in depth responses- i think that was sweet of him to do- have you actually met him? he's probably just really really shy . . . sure seems that way some times
@catnip213 I would tend to agree with that. In 1989, I was backstage at the Toronto show, approached Stipe to sign a tour program, and his manager jumped in between us. Stipe just stared at me like I was dirt. So I went back to the table where I was sitting and finished my beer with Pete Buck, and truly nice guy.
@oldTOtaper If you read biographies, you read that Michael Stipe in that period was struggling with life as "a star". I can totally understand that. Later on, it seems that he have found a way to handle with that. Fortunately! (remember Kurt Cobain)
awesome video. Bill, Mike, and Peter are as chill as a cucumber. Michael is really stuttering and coming off as nervous. Something about performing on stage must let Stipe turn into a whole different person.

If Michael was my son I'd beat him to death with a golf club whilst wearing an Ian Curtis mask!

It's hard to look directly at Michael, he's so beautiful. Like a solar eclipse.

@lordsalisbury1 Super sensitive, nearly autistic really: they both certainly have that mentality (York and Stipe)

Haters are mad because they'll never be as awesome as Michael Stipe. True facts.
