I remember driving down a lonely moonlit road one night in New Hampshire in the seventies with 3 feet of snow on either side stoned out of my tree and from the radio fell in love all over again with a dream.
my wife sings this song at karaoke, she does a fantastic version of it,so much so that people said to her that they thought that Karen carpenter had passed away, meaning that her voice is so close to Karen's and that is no disrespect to Karen's beautiful voice, i am so lucky to have a wife that can sing my favorite Carpenters song at home
...I was in college in Maine...bitter cold...my lover-girlfriend broke my heart the day before ...didn't cry...the next day CC died...I have'nt stopped crying since....purely a beautiful a soul...a voice...angelic.
This is a fan favorite for sure but one of the things that makes it so special is that Karen was only about 20 years old when she recorded it but handled it like a seasoned pro. You can hear it in the tone of her voice that she really could transfer the longing and loneliness of the lyrics. Not too many singers at 20 could even try to do what she did.
Karen finally figured it all out and started to take care of herself but her heart couldn't take it. It was so sad. That voice was so pure and so beautiful.
It was one of those times I will never forget. I love the song and of course I love the carpenters. It was a cold and snow filled day in February when I was driving down Hwy 66 in Duncan Oklahoma and the DJ for the radio station in OKC announced that Karen had just passed away. He immediately played the song "Superstar". I had to pull off the road into a parking lot and hearing that song I just cried. I could not believe it.
@boahlb05 Wow. What a memory. It was almost exactly the same with me. It was a cold dusky day and I was driving back from a big weekend in my favourite city, Toronto and Superstar was playing over the radio. After it was over, the DJ announced that Karen had died that day. I guess it was all the meories of those great tunes that caused my eyes to flood and I pulled over and bawled for an hour it seemed.
Boy, 1971.... such a simple life (at 14 yrs old). I remember this song and Bill Withers Ain't no sunshine when she's gone. Thanks for posting video clips! Carpenters were truly superstars.
This has always been my favorite Carpenters song. In the short time she was with us she blessed us with her beauty, grace and magnificent voice. She has gone to a happier place and we will always have her songs to remember her by.
Such class, glamour, sophistication, and beauty. Whitney or any slut of today could not even touch the toenail of Karen. Society is degrading fast in oblivion. Will it stop before our demise?
Karen we miss you deeply : (
p.s. and no fool, that is her real hair, just like her real deal genuine music.
I've said it before, I'll say it again - probably the best vocal/music combination ever! Karen's voice stands alone, flawless. What I don't hear as much is comments to Richard's over the top dramatic instrumentation to this song. The low keyboard/bass, harp, and just perfect blend of some type of horn instrument. And Karen supposedly did this on first take - never having seen the lyrics before!!
I count myself lucky to have seen Karen and Richard in concert in El Paso Tx. Karens voice and presence were truly amazing, I remember I was traveling to Flagsatff Az when I heard on the radio that Karen had passed. I remember a tear as thoughts of my teenage years listening to her music. In blessed memory Karen, you ae very much missed.
As much as I like Luther Vandros' version, this will always be Karen's song. Her brother Richard said that this was his favorite of her songs. Kudos to Leon Russell and Bonnie (of Delaney and Bonnie) and Rita Coolidge for coming up with one of the all-time greats.
saben por que estos seres no dejan hijos? ...son unicos.....la voz con nadie se comparan, la personalidad es unica solo pararse en el escenario contagia su magia ,, sin mas ... es unica karen carpenters...
She kind of reminds me of Agent 99 from Get Smart ( actress Barbara Feldon) with the doo she's wearing. The seventies were great. Not wall to wall crap programming and radio like today. Why else would you need 189 channels on dish TV or satellite FM?

Elton John said.........."'Judith Durham [of Australian 60s/70s folk and pop group The Seekers], like Karen Carpenter and Eva Cassidy, possesses the purest voice in popular music." He knew his girl singers. Unfortunately 2 out f the 3 died an early death. Thanks to YouTube they all are still live...and are still young.
from geminigirl...how i wished to meet her but how can i,,where ever shes now i hope shes happy for the legacy she does...she has a fantastic voice... i thank for her
Karen possessed the best vocals of ALL-TIME!!! Additionally, she was a genius on the drums, as well as Richard being an irrefutable genius on the piano and in arranging songs. And this comes from a diehard Who, Hendrix, Doors, etc rabid rock fan. Guess what? The Carpenters should be in the rock and roll hall of fame!!! Not even Joplin, Grace Slick, Aretha, or any other of rock's so called 'divas' can come remotely close to touching this song- Let the Carpenters in!!!!!!!
I was fotunate enough to see the Carpenters live in concert in the UK in the 70's and both times their performances were absolutley breathtaking. How i wish i could turn back the hands of time!
Just to clear some things up, yes this is playback. She isn't singing live in the video but there are many live performances of her around Youtube and she sounds better live imo.
She also recorded this song in just one take, reading the lyrics in a napkin.
Here is one of those live performances of this song. By the way it is spot on to the original because Karen Carpenter has a phenomenal voice! The title of that video is - Carpenters - Superstar (Live at the BBC) English/Español Subtitles (CC)
I think so too. I just couldn't believe a song sung that well was sung in just one take and read off a napkin. Her vocal performance was hair-raising. Her voice is full of emotion and incomparable quality. just wow.
Part of the reason they would have lipsynced their music is that when they first started out, they sang ALL tha harmonies, and it would be impossible to recreate that live. All the same, this is some of the best music from the '70's.
Your observation is interesting. I agree with your assessment. Having read lots about the Carpenters, the lip sycnch decision fits. They spent SO MUCH time perfecting the studio version, that to risk any potential flaw when they did not have to would negate all the studio effort they expended. Therefore, when they could, they used the recording to preserve the perfect version. Lord knows, they had enuf pressure on them, this may have been a bit of a reprieve. Thanks for your comments, btw.
Yup. Even bands who were known to be amazing live mimed. People thought of TV performances the same way as music videos back then. If you wanted to see someone play live, you'd go to their show. It wasn't until much later that miming televised performances would get such a bad connotation to it, separating people who could sing from those who couldn't.
I dont understand why this was lipsynched, we all know karen could sing 10,000 times better live than on the record, but whats amazing to me is the power in her voice in the studio recording because she was reading the lyrics off a napkin and it was her VERY VERY VERY first time singing it and it was only the first take, and it sounds so beautiful and powerful. Amazing
this is the most haunting love song .but only the voice of an angel could sing and make it so beautiful. I love you Karen you will always be in my heart.
she was anorexic for too long and it eventually took a toll on her heart... she was getting better... she gained about 30 pounds but it was too much for her weakened heart and it finally gave out.... her mother found her with her eyes rolled in the back of her head after she heard a big thump coming from her room.... R.I.P. karen carpenter
the best voice ever i saw her live in 71 at the circle star south of frisco.

Amazing

she was anorexic for too long and it eventually took a toll on her heart... she was getting better... she gained about 30 pounds but it was too much for her weakened heart and it finally gave out.... her mother found her with her eyes rolled in the back of her head after she heard a big thump coming from her room.... R.I.P. karen carpenter
