I simply stated that the value we give a dime is worth more then the value we give a nickel. But in reality the value of the material of the dime is less then the value of the material of the nickel. Here's a fun fact: The last penny that was all-copper was back in 1982. Since then, they've mixed it with other materials, mainly zinc, b/c copper was getting too expensive. If you drop a post-1982 penny into a jar of acid, the zinc part will dissolve, but the all-copper pre-1982 penny will remain intact.
Here's a fun fact too: If the metal used to make a coin is worth more than the value that the coin represents you could start selling these coin's as scrap and make a profit. This is why copper is now "too expensive" for pennies.
European banks Destroy old damaged coin's. Destroyed euros sold as scrap are worth less than the value they used to represent. Chinese scrap buyers started putting the coins back together and flew them back to Europe. they made millions before they got caught.
