  • Wish you had an actual video of this awesome AMERICAN putting it down.

  • @MRQ45LIMO i do have some actual footage of roscoe but i dont think i have the technology or technical ability to get it posted on youtube , sorry

  • Love that classical music.

  • Go ahead Roscoe!

  • Don't know what the hell he's sayin' but I likes it

  • different emotion to it***

  • Folk just has a completely different it, it's intoxicating to the music appreciator

  • This ranks among is the most amazing music ever recorded. Like much of the music from India and the far east, born of suffering, from people living close to the Earth It steps into the mystical realm, evoking the timeless cycles of life and death, expressing truths we already know buried deep in our psyche. Everything this guy is doing - his atonal scale, his unsyncopated playing - it all paints this emotional image in high resolution. Absolutely as great a musician as any who have lived.

  • technology has changed music...emotion and tradition and skill have been replaced by formula and sampling and computer savvy

    social progress has changed music

  • I am always floored by Roscoe Holcomb. Impossible to replicate that style and voice.

  • I like it too. It is pure and raw and out of tune. It would be much easier to listen to if it were in better tune.

  • Hi Ros! That was fabulous! I love starting my day with a shot of pure emotion!! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"

  • Thanks to Youtube I have now discovered Roscoe Holcomb. Archetypical singing.

  • I'm always searching for new music...must admit not heard of Roscoe till about a month ago.......Wow what a discovery.

  • WHO CARES? just listen to the music and be freed.

  • @ourbearskins do you have to listen while smoking weed to get that effect?

  • @mrdjchasm It's the music that should be giving you a high, not the inhalation of smoke. You should learn what a natural high feels like. i think it'd be good for you.

  • I'm now big into this shit!!... we are in a depression after all!

  • Part 3 (lol-sorry)we listen to it all n love most-i.c.p.- don't rip lol- i know many ppl don't lyk it but it is art and a statement),death metal, techno, classic rock, bluegrass, rhasta, gospell,50's and on and on!!!! every single song carries peoples souls inside and upon it's backs!!! Music censorship is a sin!! I'm sorry(NOT) lol had to get this outa me!! I've bn on youtube 12hr a day lately and just am sad at ppl's narrowmindedness!! TC and kp on finding our roots!!! Thank You!! PEACE! :-)

  • Part 2-open your eyes and ears youth of today! We all preach Peace, love, harmony, individuality and understanding-yet many many of your ears are opened a pinprick to the size they can be! Music is meant to unite-not to rip on because you will not stand still a moment to listen! I fear that soooo much of our musical history will be lost in the future..So So Sad!! My two teens have a wonderful love of music because theyve bn exposed to all types at an early age-as I hv learned to luv theyre music!

  • In re of your answer to lishboy-you are so right!!!! 90%+ of the population doesn't-1; realize where the roots of todays modern music began:with the poor and the slaves-songs of angst and the downtrodden and as a way to cope with the stress of daily life-much as we use music today-to feel better. 2; these young kids don't have or learn music apretiation. Music programs are being cut evwhere.Music is more than loud blasting(i love it loud too lol) but raw emotion and heart!! ok-rant over

  • timeless music here, lets just say if and when someone pulls the plug and all the lights go down in the city, acoustic music trumps all and we will find that those who stayed true to their roots will be found to be the wiser of the lot.

  • Regarding FlyingTiger64, it is easy to dis' a man that can not defend himself. It is a shame you could not express your opinion to Roscoe and some of his Kin Folk to their faces.

FlyingTiger64 you come and place your judgement upon a man that you, yourself have done less than Roscoe. FlyingTiger64, every bum has an opinion as you have shared yours. I will not allow you to insult Roscoe.

  • truly the real thing this guy is great

  • Roscoe was a MASTER MUSICIAN you turd.

  • He is a great musician. Just like Elmore James or any of the old time Bluesmen... they played with their souls and so did Roscoe. I'll take this over any boring, cold Steve Vai or Stevie Ray Vaughn or whatever. You can practice all day long and play all kinds of complex shit in perfect tune but it doesn't mean anything if there's no soul.

  • @SovietTelevision I agree with you, but you might think about comparing

Steve Vai with SRV !!! Steve Ray is completely different (I wouldn´t blame Steve Vai either...) and he´s got soul

right out of the blues...the only shame is, he died too young.

It´s all because of different tastes and so on but I´d never call SRV a ´cold´

playing bluesman, my goodness just my 2 cents :-)

  • @fenderuwe Yes it's all subjective. SRV just never did anything for me, never made me feel a thing. Sounded like a computer. His brother Jimme, on the other hand, is pretty good. Music should make you feel something, like Holcomb, or like Elmore James, Robert Johnson, Etta James. Jerry Lee Lewis.

  • i didnt know music like this existed. gotta up my IQ cos this is fantastic

  • These types of voices, lee sexton, Doc Watson, are all beautiful voices, they aren't conventional by any means. But they all have sorrow, and soul and hurt behind them, and many many years of experience and old age, something that most of us will never experience with our spoiled lifestyles. Bluegrass has nothing on the mountain music of Kentucky, and its a bastard form of something great.

  • Great music does not always define it's self with perfect pitch, intonation, and tuning. As great writing is not built from perfect spelling and able speed on the typewriter. Many of our best writer miss-spelled, spelled phonetically, or simply made up their own punctuation. If music like writing depended on these mechanical parameters to define greatness, all court stenographers would be great authors.

  • its good to see one of my relatives making good music he does some pretty good picking

  • I'am not american and i never dig some coal (sorry for my bad english) ... but this man and his banjo are great ... i think Holcomb song are for the soul/heart not for ears ^^

    thx a lot ...

  • @jetlamit Good English! :)

  • @jetlamit ohhh... i'm listenning this song 2 months later ... thx

  • hey/banjo player/thats amazingly stupid commentary. go dig some coal . and think about about where your banjo came from.

  • Roscoe's such a great musician... Your ears are not my ears

  • @FlyingTiger64

Have you ever heard what Eric Clapton said about Roscoe Holcomb?

  • @ceepatton

I don't care what Eric Clapton said about Roscoe. I can hear, and I can play a banjo... and I'm telling you that Roscoe's banjo is out of tune, he doesn't play it very well, and he was just a mediocre musician/singer at best. But if you like him, that's fine!! He doesn't have to be great to be worthwhile. It's art, and beauty is in the eye (and the ear) of the beholder. I'm just keeping it real, Mr. Patton. I mean no offense to you or anyone else.

  • @FlyingTiger64

Mediocre at best? You obviously haven't a soul. Actually, you're a damned fool and I can see on your channel that others agree.

  • Haven't a soul? Let me ask you a couple of questions - are you an American? Have you ever actually seen a banjo in person? Could you tune one if your life depended on it? My comments weren't meant as a personal attack towards you, but now you've turned it towards me, so let's see what YOU know. Are you a musician? Do you know ANYTHING about this music? I live in the shadow of the blue ridge, and it's a REAL part of my life, not just an anthropological curiosity. Haven't a soul indeed...

  • @FlyingTiger64

I think your comments and questions are much more notable than you are.

  • your a stupid yankey or at least you sound like one get a life and leave the banjo to the men who were born to play not queers like u

  • Lets not enter the Cilvil War into this.

That is over and done with, but I will say this you are right he needs to know the roots before giving his opinion. I play banjo in a NEW GRASS BAND and I'm Indian, & Irish still considered a Yank, but you can't blame all yanks because of one Person that doesn't know his History on the Roots of Grass such as MR Bill Monroe learning from the Black Blues Artist .That is a Quote from himself. You can hear the Blues in his playing.

  • @ceepatton

Eric Clapton? You would select HIM as a source of expertise and judgement on Appalachian music and musical talent in that genre? Really?? Are you kidding me??? I'm sorry, but for you to even say that shows me how very little you know about it. Eric Clapton?? You've GOTTA be kidding.

  • @FlyingTiger64: Troll. Opinions are like asses - everyone has one, and it's always to keep yours to yourself.

  • @FlyingTiger64

"I think the music he was singing and playing is much more notable than he was"

What on earth does that mean?

  • ain't nothin quite like mountain music

  • this is great.

  • Love it, real music

  • God knows how many times I laid up in an old confederate cemetery with a bottle of wine singin this song wanting to "dig a hole in the meadow" be laid down in that "cold cold ground"

  • Roscoe Holcomb is the definition of the word awesome.Pure joy, pure heart, pure music

    thanks!

  • man, all these comments are great... makes sense for such an awesome song by a great musician

  • This is classic mountain music!!!!

  • @FlyingTiger64

being able to convey some sort of emotion is more important then technical ability away

  • @johnnymccrowe

That's a matter of opinion. But emotion and technical ability are not mutually exclusive - and that's a fact. Hey, if you dig you some Roscoe, that's cool. I was just pointing out what's painfully obvious to anyone who isn't deaf.

  • @johnnymccrowe let's see you do it.

  • @lishsboy are you an idiot? i posted this video for people to enjoy, and i stated that i believe "being able to convey some sort of emotion is more important then technical ability "

whats that have to do with proving how good i can play my banjo?? maybe you cant comprehend what you've read, but im on roscoe's side.

  • @johnnymccrowe hahaha this is funny "Roscoe's side eh?" The last thing Roscoe Holcomb could care about is some comment someone made about him on the internet. I agree with you , if you don't like Roscoe Holcomb then you either don't like the banjo, or your too wrapped up in the difference between "bluegrass" and "old time music." Roscoe Holcomb was a hard working man with a voice that chilled to the bone, his life ,his work and his mind set helped shape America into what it is. R.I.P. Roscoe !

  • @johnnymccrowe thank you, for posting. It makes my quest of broadening my horizons much easier. Excellent song and pics.

  • ur sense of greatness is VERY messed up

  • @FlyingTiger64 Definently agree with jonnymccrowe. Since you consider his singing to be...well is why i discredit your statement totally. Why would I want to listen to a singer with a pretty voice? This is the voice of a real man playing real music conveying real emotions through his banjo and voice.

  • @FlyingTiger64 You need to free your mind. Once you've done that, you'll hear what the rest of us are hearing.

  • @FlyingTiger64 joe satriani and steve vai play with their guitars in tune but that doesnt stop them being boring as batshit. beyonce and that dick from creed can both sing like birds but that dont stop them putting out the most tiresome drivel ever recorded. i guess its true what they say about opinions and arseholes. everyones got one.

  • @FlyingTiger64 I like the brothers Four version nice n hootnanny clean n in tune.

But this works best four me.

  • Great stuff!

  • my favorite musician

  • Wonderful. Thanks so much!

  • thanks very much for all your posts of dock boggs and roscoe holcomb

  • This is Mountain Music at it's best.

  • This is music at it's best. Pure and raw.

  • @mrdjchasm As ignorant as your statement is, it probably doesn't deserve a reply but you struck a nerve. Where do you think Zeppelin got their inspiration? From, among other things, English and American roots Music. This will be remembered long after you and I are dust. The only way Zep will be remembered is that their name will brought up when folks talk about who ripped off Willie Dixon the most. And I don't think I have enough space left to insult your out-of-date william hung reference

  • @TylerSDodson Hahahaha! Have you ever even studied music? Music History? Music Appreciation? People who are remembered in music are those that made an Impact. The game changers. The people who threw a wrench in the machine and changed it up. Its either that or the people that copied them and knew a bit more about marketing. (Im referring to classical music as well). Its awesome cause his voice is unique. Not because he is a talented musician and definitely not because he was a talented singer.

  • @TylerSDodson Oh and I love how I can make an outdated reference when the video content is from before I was born.

  • @TylerSDodson Oh one last thing... I had no idea who Willie Dixon was so I looked him up. Loved his music. But Led is pretty different. Led will continue to be recognized as a rock icon throughout the next 50 years while Willie will, sadly, not be known by the majority of Americans in 10 years time.

  • @mrdjchasm How can you talk to me about music history when you didn't know who Willie Dixon was? Without him, Led Zeppelin and more than likely quite a few other rock bands wouldn't be around. He actually sued Led Zeppelin and won. . . . In fact a few people have sued Led Zeppelin. There are quite a few cases so I won't list them here but check it, don't take my word for it. Maybe it's true what they say, "good artists borrow, great artists steal."

  • @mrdjchasm i am a led zep fan but i hope you are wrong people who seek out the history of music will always know who people like willie dixon were, thats like saying no one knows who mozart was, sure the majority of people will listen to whatever the mainstream says is good but to those true music fans that seek out real music they will always know what came before
