In 2000 I listened to an Andrea Bocelli album with all versions of the Ave Maria on it, and found this one the best, and still do!

I find this version a bit too 'light', although she has a lovely and special voice.

People are casting an opinion from a classical point of view. This is not in the classical styles. It's comtemporary and it's very good. This version captures the essence of the song and yet appeals to a new audience. Rewind and listen with "new" ears and spirit. Music is not exclusive.

I really like this.

she's not as bad as people r saying she is. While it's certainly not the best I've heard I wouldn't go as far as saying it's appalling...

she actually has a very beautiful voice, but people are so used to the tone of the opera version, so this softer tone is a bit different than usual. Everybody sings differently...and I've heard much worse.

I give her credit for still sounding beautiful...

Actually, I don't mind the arrangement so much. I actually rather like it. It could be nice with the right voice, but she just doesn't have the chops for this song. This is not to take any shots at her talent. She obviously was very talented and had a great career before succumbing to leukemia several years ago. RIP.

Ave Maria is a popular and much recorded aria by Vladimir Vavilov, generally misattributed to Giulio Caccini, and composed around 1970. Vavilov himself published and recorded it on the Melodiya label with the ascription to "Anonymous" in 1972.

Thanks to dominaxel for the kind response. There was more to Minako than she let on or even consciously knew. I was first impressed by the quality of her voice, then by her beauty, then by her ability to combine sensuality and wholesome goodness. Even before she sang opera and long before she became ill I recognized a deep spirituality in the background of her personal warmth and charm. I'm Japanese. About 20 years ago, she was an idol and often appeared on TV. She was quite popular then. She died of leukaemia in 2005, when she was 38.Toward the end of her life she sang some classical songs. I believe this nideo is one of them. Too young,so sad.

It is quite sad that this lovely young woman with obvious talent has passed away. May she be at peace. To echo other comments here, the epitome of this piece was reached by Jo Sumi. It is simply the finest rendition of this version there is. I do not particularly favor the orchestration of this version but Miss Honda's voice was certainly angelic. Further, as has been stated, this was written and orchestrated by Vladimir Vavilov, not Caccini as is often claimed.

AVE MARIA...Hail, Mary. This is, or should be, a prayer, not a "modelling theme." When you separate the music from the purpose, it rings a false note.

She has a lovely voice, but the execution of this number is ponderous, the arrangement sounds like a dirge, and the entire effort is unimpressive.

I am sure the artist does better with other material. This just isn't for her.
