Another layer of this piece is the absurdity of being offended by it.
You see - if you are offended by THIS then YOU are a possible bigot/homophobe. Why? Because Mel Gibson distorted just as much as Stewart Lee did, so if you love Braveheart, but are offended by this, what does that say about you?
@thezodiacdigital good that you pick one word to blub on about. I'm referring to his craft in and of the comedy scene. but it's lovely that you have such strong opinions and an obviously superior intellect. FWIW: brand is not high on my favourites list, and neither is lee, but they are clearly both examples of the top tier of what is a fantastic pool of stand-up talent that the uk has to offer.
Lee was born in Wellington, Shropshire, 5 April 1968
Little is known for certain of William Wallace's immediate family. The Wallace family may have originally come from Shropshire as followers of Walter Fitzalan (died June 1177), High Steward of Scotland and ancestor of the Stewart family.
@alanmarsden ...it's not as easy as you might think.
He has also spoken quite specifically about creating his audience (for want of a better description), crafting his act and his style that he now has a definite playground for himself.
He's truly one of the greatest comedians that England (Scotland, natch) has, but it seems rather feckless to compare comedians. Especially successful ones.
@alanmarsden All well and good, but saying one comedian is better than another is a bit silly, really.
Brand is a relative baby compared to Lee, but his humour is undeniable. Whether you appeal to more or less educated folk really isn't the point. If you _can_ appeal to both it is better.
Lee has talked at length about the state of comedy in the UK these days (I for one think it's awesome that there is so much, and such a great circuit, try finding a decent stand up night over here in NYC)...
@squonkmadmanmoon how is brand's humor "undeniable"? i watched his russell brand in new york show and i have never seen a less funny standup, maybe ever. and i've seen tons. it was shockingly unfunny, and he used a lot of "shocking" (i say this sarcastically, because this was his intent) language about penises and sex and a lot of "intelligent" (ditto) flowery language that had zero actual substance. it was not just unfunny, it was an annoying insult to my intelligence.
This is funny, but what makes it funnier is knowing he's saying this to a room full of drunk Scottish people.
3:50 - This is why i love this guys comedy, sometimes when he's just making off-the cuff remarks, or responding to hecklers he's even funnier than when he's doing his written stuff.
Yes indeedy, the fat chap thinks "I'm gonna kill you pal" ... even through part one! It's like he's saying "I dinnae think yer tha least bit funny pal"!
And being a 'competent wordsmith' doesn't make a comedian. He's a big critic of Russell Brand who many would describe as a 'competent wordsmith' ie when asked about his past troubles with the laws he responded it was due to his "youthfull folly, jubilance and high jinx" it's not really comedy some people just have a good knowledge of language
Yeah but Brand's "flowery language" is all fluff and no substance. It's the literary or linguistic equivalent of attention-seeking - it's just really irritating stuff, and detracts from any actual comedy he performs.
Lee's language is direct, purposeful and there for a reason. Plus, of course, there's actual comedic depth to his work. And I really don't think he's that high-brow, I just think people have set their standards for comedians really low. And that's your fault, other comedians.
@alanmarsden But Russel I think is a better talent as he is not horrible about people. He takes events and makes them appear through his perception, which I think is genius.
All I see Lee doing is arrogantly over-intelectualising whilst just reporting wikifacts in his acerbic acidic style.
I think Russell Brand and Doug Stanhope are great and the best comedians alive.
Thats just an opinion though.
A totally off the cuff reccomendation though is Shappi Kosandis ex hubby. He is very funny.
@alanmarsden I think you've nailed it here... Brand often takes an idea that isn't particularly clever or original and embellishes it with baroque language and literary allusions to make what he is saying sound complicated or high-brow. Nothing wrong with that, but Lee can take an interesting, novel idea and explain it in simple, uncomplicated language. This is far more difficult to do and shows a lot more sophistication in thought. I think he's the George Orwell of stand up comedy.
@alanmarsden i agree, if you hear brand speak, he throws in every word he knows for no real rhyme or reason. to educated people, or at least people who care about language deeply, it's just showboating. the best word for a situation certainly could be a more obscure or longer word, but it also very well could not. a real wordsmith knows when to use each word, not defaults to the "harder" word because it'll impress people more that he knows it.
I've had people who love Russell Brand telling me he's "so good with language" as well. I suppose he is compared to Bernard Manning or someone like that but although he likes to act like he's very clever, he's not nearly as clever as he thinks he is. He's pretty average compared to the likes of Stuart Lee, or Simon Munnery or of course Richard Herring, or actually most of the new "alternative" comedians. Of course, they aren't nearly as popular as RB. Perhaps there's a connection?
Stewart Lee forces the audience to look at themselves. Something Brand would hate and therefor puts the onus completely on himself, where he "Fackin' lavs it!"
I think these 2 videos show such genius and quite frankly a lot of bollocks to stand up in front of a Glasgow audience and do that bit...
@creasicle - Russell Brand is a vey competent wordsmith, but he chooses to use silly words and act the idiot sometimes, and Lee was merely satirising that side of Brand's persona.
I've never heard of Glamis Castle or the Broch of Gurness before not being Scottish.
Why don't you explain it if you're so well informed? Last time I checked knowledge of Scottish historical landmarks was not an appropriate benchmark for mental capacity?
He made it all up, in order to tell a Scottish audience that their national hero was a homosexual. The joke is about context and the clever use of language.... Only a competent wordsmith would be capable of such a feat.... "Scotland was invented in 1911 by the MaGowan sweet company as way of marketing Highland toffee"
In the words of SL " The jokes are there but some of you need to raise your game"
I think some comedians like to hide behind that idea that their audience is just too thick to understand but maybe the jokes just weren't that good. I'm a big fan of Stuart Lee, I thought he was taking something out of context or just being clever but apparently not. If comedy isn't restricted by truthfullness or reality it should be funnier.
You can not even spell his name properly - I think you have pretended to be a fan of his work to give us all the impression that your argument is neutral and more substantial - in this case, the audience is thick if they don't understand his undermining of stereotypes and prejudice.
Has he actually ever been booed off for this sort've thing? He's always making references to being booed off or whatever, but it would surprise me if it had happened as many times as he says.
In his opening gambit regarding Americans he explains his stance on generalisations and so varily justifies his subsequent comments - taking into consideration that this is a stand-up routine and not a declaration of war that is unashamedly aimed at intelligent people who aren't pathetically offended by comments that make absolutely no difference to their well-being whatsoever. Absolutely inspired and hilarious. By the way, anyone who's offended by this, er, hahahahahahaha. Good.
i agree with sk8aralex, some people who say they are offended just dont get this kind of comedy. which brings me to the question WHY ARE YOU WATCHING IT, JUST TURN IT OFF, ITS THAT EASY!. ... HE IS A COMEDIAN, HE TAKES THE PISS OUT OF EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE AND ITS FUNNY. PEOPLE GET OFFENDED TOO EASILY THESE DAYS. IF YOU DONT LIKE HIM THEN DONT TYPE HIS NAME IN AND YOU WONT SEE HIM. yeah but tbh fair their is nothing saying you know scots beware you will be offended' etc so they might just be toodling along youtube just like ooh this seems interesting then ....WAWAWHAM!!!!!!! they just get hit with it you know?
There is a warning that they might be offended. It's when they WENT TO A FUCKING COMEDY GIG. Someone with such a basic grasp of language as, um, you might need a massive disclaimer, we (speaking as a Scot who frequents the Stand) are quite happy to have the piss taken.

I agree with you but iwas responding to someone saying that they should go on the youtube video ...aww fuck it nevermind im going back to re-reading harry potter. Insult me a few times that will give me the motivation to respond to you
Well, my apologies, you did mention Youtube, which I missed on my first scan. Sorry, although to be honest if someone's watching Stewart Lee, they should know what to expect
See im a big stewart lee fan and i would say yes they should expect whats comnig but tbh he is so intellectual in his stand up that most dont have the brain capacity to experience him. Basically like Bill Hicks he is not heard of that much among the british population
Actually Hicks was very popular in Britain, more than in the US I heard. Although in our days may be you're right, he is unheard of. In Ireland most prefer Tommy Tiernan to any intelligent comedy like Stewart Lee or Dylan Moran
I agree, most popular comedians are those who curse when its not relevant, make sexist/racist jokes without any sense of irony. e.g ALL OF MODERN COMEDIANS FROM THE USA.. :))
The words he spoke are unimportant. The timing, delivery and showmanship were superb. If Stewart Lee has taught us anything it's that William Wallace and Robert the Bruce definitely took it up the harris.
Or, of course, it could be a subtle suggestion that the only Scottish king England has ever had was in fact a chocolate bandito. True Facts.
I studied classical language so the word "homophobia" makes me wince. I'll assume you mean homosexist. I also don't agree with taboos of language. To be offended by words is a waste of energy; energy which could be used to make the world a better place. And no, having everybody walking over eggshells and not saying anything which could be remotely offensive to someone else would not make for a better world.
I don't mind arguing with a teenager. Unless you are assuming a premise that argument is necessarily negative.
I do not believe that learning is ever a waste of energy, it is probably one of the most noble uses of energy one can employ. It is a lack of education which seems to correspond with anti-social behaviour and crime, so by extension, individual learning does help to make the world a better place. quad erat demonstratum :P
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
If you had actually studied language, and not just MADE EVERYTHING YOU ARE SAYING UP YOU FUCKING FAGGOT then you would know that anything ending in 'ist' means a preference *for* something - racist means a preference for a certain race, sexist means a preference for a certain sex - and not as is commonly believed a hatred or other negative feeling for something.
I hadn't realised that a toboganist did what he did because he has a preference for tobogans instead of skill with the tobogan. Same goes for rapists, they do it because they have a preference for it. Let me clear this up for you because, quite frankly, you are a fucking idiot.
"Ist" is added to the end of nouns when the verb ending is "ise", "ism", or "ize". It is usually used to describe the persuasion of a personage. A communist believes in commuism. A sexist believes in sexism (or the superiority of one sex). A homosexist belives in inequalty of sexual preference (either for or against it).
Jesus christ you're a moron. The point was that 'ist' is an inherantly positive thing. You can't be a toboganist that hates all tobogans, you can't be a rapist that never rapes.
Likewise you can't be a 'homosexist' that does not perform, does not like, and does not agree with homosexualism.
It's a word you made up and like everything you have ever thought or come up with it is wrong and you are stupid
Homosexists don't exist, mate. I believe the word you're groping for is "homophobe"... itself on inaccurate compound word because it actually means someone who has an irrational fear or hatred of things that are the same as themselves.
YOU probably should take offence as you're just the type of person he's ripping the piss out of - getting all het up over a dead man and taking offence on his behalf
why would suggesting wallace is a homosexual belittle scotland, because it's false? the film also makes false claims about WW, so is Braveheart similarly belittling?
hubris is never endearing, less so when it's tied to preening nationalism. so you take offence, we'll point and laugh
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
It makes no difference how long ago he died mate, he's part of our history and national identity. Poke fun at him and you poke fun at Scotland.
The real WW witnessed his father being killed while fighting the English who were sacking, looting and raping their way through his country. So began his fight and, to this day Scotland still fights for it's independence.
I'm not interested in the irony of it mate, all I saw was a guy trying to get his laughs out of belittling a part of our history.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
William Wallace would be turning his his grave at watching a room full of fellow scots laughing along at an English 'comedian' calling him a paedophile and a homosexual.
Sure Stewart Lee is a brave man for telling these 'jokes' to a Glaswegian audience but the man he was making a fool of had more bravery in his little finger than most of us will ever hope to even imagine in our lifetimes.
Any self respecting scot should've boo'd him off the stage.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Me? Care to expand on that then?
Just because it's trendy for a comedian to be controversial these days, it's no reason to politely laugh along like spineless sheep.. and I don't think having an opinion on this makes me an idiot.
I can laugh at myself no problem but I have a sense of pride for my country and the people who died for it.
William Wallace wasn't just a character in a Hollywood film, he's a real part of our identity ffs and the people in that room should hang their heads in shame.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
What?? I know my country's history well and I know that the movie was grossly inaccurate. But are you suggesting that Stewart Lee's version is true? LMAO
it was that sense of pride / way that people gain validation from their country's reputation / people who died centuries ago that lee was lampooning
in particular the idea that only masculine mainstream ideas are valid
it was laced with irony, the only people who took it it at surface meaning / took offence are people who believe anything other than rigid heterosexuality / masculinity is a bad thing
he wasn't insulting you nor your intelligence. unless you took offence, that is...
What makes Lee stand out is his refusal to insult the intelligence of his audience. He doesn't assume that this Scottish audience will take offence to his words...he assumes that they will understand his intent.
i was wondering why there were so few comments posted here, but i think it must be because the 2,008 viewers are speechless. Stewart Lee is a master - he takes everything to the next level, and then smashes that level up and builds another level on top of it, and then smashes...

I don't mind arguing with a teenager. Unless you are assuming a premise that argument is necessarily negative.
I do not believe that learning is ever a waste of energy, it is probably one of the most noble uses of energy one can employ. It is a lack of education which seems to correspond with anti-social behaviour and crime, so by extension, individual learning does help to make the world a better place. quad erat demonstratum :P
jacksawild 2 years ago 3
but its gotta be the right type of education - classical language isn't helping anyone but yourself.

I enjoy debate, please don't attach to it an emotional component which does not exist here.
All my love, Jacks :)

Hey, yeah! Instead of arguing with a teenager on the internet, he could actually be doing something constructive to better himself!
Y'know...like learning classical languages.

You're *SO* clever!!!111oneonenoe
I hadn't realised that a toboganist did what he did because he has a preference for tobogans instead of skill with the tobogan. Same goes for rapists, they do it because they have a preference for it. Let me clear this up for you because, quite frankly, you are a fucking idiot.
jacksawild 2 years ago 2
"Ist" is added to the end of nouns when the verb ending is "ise", "ism", or "ize". It is usually used to describe the persuasion of a personage. A communist believes in commuism. A sexist believes in sexism (or the superiority of one sex). A homosexist belives in inequalty of sexual preference (either for or against it).
jacksawild 2 years ago
Jesus christ you're a moron. The point was that 'ist' is an inherantly positive thing. You can't be a toboganist that hates all tobogans, you can't be a rapist that never rapes.
Likewise you can't be a 'homosexist' that does not perform, does not like, and does not agree with homosexualism.
It's a word you made up and like everything you have ever thought or come up with it is wrong and you are stupid
JonathanBloggs 2 years ago
Homosexists don't exist, mate. I believe the word you're groping for is "homophobe"... itself on inaccurate compound word because it actually means someone who has an irrational fear or hatred of things that are the same as themselves.
lo2enge 2 years ago 2
like i said, right over your head
YOU probably should take offence as you're just the type of person he's ripping the piss out of - getting all het up over a dead man and taking offence on his behalf
why would suggesting wallace is a homosexual belittle scotland, because it's false? the film also makes false claims about WW, so is Braveheart similarly belittling?
hubris is never endearing, less so when it's tied to preening nationalism. so you take offence, we'll point and laugh

Just to add..
His routine should be taken at face value.
He wasn't being ironic, he was HIDING behind irony and using it to cover up his bigotted views.
I know the factual history of Scotland and the difference between that and the Hollywood dramatisation that was Braveheart.
Homosexuality has nothing to do with MY argument. He was the one using it to score a cheap laugh....

Any self respecting scot should've boo'd him off the stage.
kingbeau68 2 years ago
As Stewart says you should be proud your national hero was gay.
'I am a gay"
William Wallace, "Braveheart".

went right over your head that, didn't it.

William Wallace wasn't just a character in a Hollywood film, he's a real part of our identity ffs and the people in that room should hang their heads in shame.
kingbeau68 2 years ago
So you are only proud of your national hero if he follows the Hollywood version of history?
You are instead ashamed of him if the truth is less than sunshine and rainbows?

What?? I know my country's history well and I know that the movie was grossly inaccurate. But are you suggesting that Stewart Lee's version is true? LMAO
Get a grip mate...
kingbeau68 2 years ago
it was that sense of pride / way that people gain validation from their country's reputation / people who died centuries ago that lee was lampooning
in particular the idea that only masculine mainstream ideas are valid
it was laced with irony, the only people who took it it at surface meaning / took offence are people who believe anything other than rigid heterosexuality / masculinity is a bad thing
he wasn't insulting you nor your intelligence. unless you took offence, that is...

very fucking brave. funny as hell. love a comedian who doesnt try to appeal to the lowest common denometer
mb6578 3 years ago 5
What makes Lee stand out is his refusal to insult the intelligence of his audience. He doesn't assume that this Scottish audience will take offence to his words...he assumes that they will understand his intent.

i was wondering why there were so few comments posted here, but i think it must be because the 2,008 viewers are speechless. Stewart Lee is a master - he takes everything to the next level, and then smashes that level up and builds another level on top of it, and then smashes...
englandexpects77 3 years ago 3
That was absolute class. He's a very brave, clever guy, is Stewart Lee...
