I just took my 2011 elixir CR brakes in because of the same problem. The lever kept sticking when lever was extending out. This is a common problem for these brakes. My bike store is going to replace them.I only had them 4 months. Once I get the new ones, I will sell them and get Shimano XTR 988.
@rk949 bro im a newbie what would u recommend for an upgrade from the hayes stroker trail----avid elixir 9c or avid elixir cr? difference between the 2?
@lstruggy elixir replaced my 2011 CR levers with 2012 elixir 9 levers, because they don't make 2012 CRs. I wou'd go with the shimano xtr m988 or XTs. Way better brakes than elixirs
2 banderies&all: yes, I'd fixed the problem in few time after posting this video. The problem was bad rubber seals and white polymeric rings, I added link to the pics to description of the video.
To fix the problem, you need for "Lever Internals/Service Kit - Elixir CR/R/5", see page 21 in SRAM techdoc (link to the doc is also in description)
Thank you for such a nice comments like "idiot". Because of you this video has only 2 times less views, than official SRAM video.
If any of you guys that are calling HIM an idiot really watched the video instead of just being enormous ASSES for no apparent reason.... You'd have noticed the brake lever presents a fair amount of non-smooth resistance during stroking, which is evident of a busted master cylinder seal. The lever needs a new master cylinder. Right now the fluid is just going back and forth through the seal. (PS: the caliper has a spacer in it which acts just like a rotor, so the pads aren't going anywhere!)
It has NOTHING to do with air in the brake lines. I bled mine just a couple of days ago and tonight the handle just crunched in on me. Can you fix or replace the seals?
OMG you clever no no ! i just killed the brake, if you do that whit out the brake pads pushing on something the disk or the padspacer you push the pistons out and then bye bye Elixir!
i had the same prob. its because when u bled it their was a air big bubble just make sure the calliper bleed port is the highest point on the system when u bleed it next
My rear Elixir 5 was totally shot after just 700KM of trail riding. Lever is soft just as yours. To be honest, the Elixir 5's have given me nothing but trouble.
I have a set of Hayes from 2006 that have been 100% fine, just did a bleed after a few years of excellent, trouble free use.
No worries though, Christmas upgrade will be Hope Tech M4 front, X2 rear!

I got a question.
Are the levers solid or do they rock up and down, side to side?
YourFatClownAss 1 year ago
Mine too. Rear one was low on fluid. Not as bad as this but lever pull was noticeably squishier than the other one. Bled the brake and all was good.
BBlountdesign 1 year ago
have you tried adding fluid to your brake?
when i got my elixer cr's, the front break was slightly low on fluid
