@vincentdcn it can mean different things for different people i guess...but if talking about love, the best feeling is when its natural, unexpected and not demanding ;-)
@hedkandigirl that has ALWAYS been the best part to me too! : ) ....I love bands from other countries.. they have more important things to sing about :P : )
I would say that there are fillers on this album. But this song is truly special. It has that automatic quality about it, as good as The Beatles, The Kinks, The Who, The Stones, The Smiths, Simon and G. It`s that good.
That song is sublime. It is so mellow and relaxing it's almost enough to put me to sleep, except that I feel a chill down my spine when she hits the higher notes on the chorus line. Exquisitely beautiful.
Her voice strikes like an angelic light. Her emotional clarity cleanses the heart. And her hidden innocence sustains hopes and dreams. She is unique.
The Sundays and Mazzy Star are my favorite bands of all time. I think both of them only released 3 albums each. I could listen to them for all time. I hope that they will release more. But if they don't, thats ok. I will treasure this music always.
As much as raising a child and being a parent is a beautiful, once-in-a-lifetime experience, I have such big hopes that they will come back sooner or later, when we expect it the least. It'd be a shame to see all that talent and beauty terminated and unproductive for the rest of time. I have a feeling they will come back and strike again for the best.
Perhaps, as satisfying as it is to create their music, they have decided to dedicate where they are now to themeselves.
There are things in an industry, in a career, in a life, that can be less than pleasant. And when taking on a family, it is nice to have a viable, maybe quieter, option to fall back on.
Kudos to what they did in the past. We will still be able to enjoy it. And best wishes to whatever they have plans for in the future.
I was in London some years ago and heard the Rolling Stones' version of "Wild Horses." I realized right there that not only was The Sundays' verson better, but that Harriet Wheeler has one of the finest voices I have ever heard. She is a giant of a talent, who never caught on here in the States. I tried to see the Sundays in England, but never got the chance. Their albums are pure magic, however. I would recommend them to anyone.
I remember buying Static and Silence in 97. A great album that was largely overlooked as I recall. This was probably the most dreamy song on the cd. A timeless classic.
It is certainly one of those rare albums where each song is cherished. But what makes the Sundays one of the greatest bands is not even Harriet's angelic voice or their delicate melodies. Their last album more than the previous give expression to some of the most tender emotions, emotions normally not accessible in music, at least not those with words.
I think the third album had more of a polished, produced sound, whereas the first two were of a more raw, indie style. Some people like that change, and some don't. The addition of the horns on Summertime and I Can't Wait shocked me at first, but I warmed up to the entire album after a while.
That is an apt way to contrast static/silence with the first two. I'm tempted to disagree but cannot. A more produced sound as you say isn't necessarily better but the lyrics on the last album are more memorable in my mind-- at least more of them.
the simple truth is that "Static and Silence" is pop masterpiece. it's one of those rare albums were every song is like a master class in pop music craft. i cherish this album and never tire of listening to it.
From Fleet in Hampshire originally. Hang around the South Bank in London on a Sunday, and you just might bump into Harriet & David (and their kids). Next time I'll get up the courage to say hello and thanks.
What a voice! All three albums were good but I prefer " Blind" the second album, the best track they ever did was from this album "Cry" I can't believe how good that is!
'Our muffled life is granted unclear, painfully, sharply dreary and occasionally desperate; but in the end there is no hiding the ever longed for fuzzy tickle. Just please, let me relinquish, banish the feather forever to the foolish! I am enough to scour. I am tired and ready for blessed sleep in hope of the common, pure dream.'
At first I thought "here's where d story ends" was their best, until I bought d cd "Static and silence" in 1997 n heard this beautifully haunting song. During that time I was in like with a girl next door and can't do anything bcos she was dating another guy...Now hearing this song I wanna throw my chair to the wall and get hysterical...hehe just kidding
i think comebackharriet had it. He said "he can post the b&w acoustic they did for MTV Europe, but YouTube will quickly remove it and kill his account because Viacom (which owns MTV) is really pressuring them to enforce copyright infringement". sucks.
On immediate listen i couldn't get into it quite like i did the first two albums until i came to this song which, naturally, changed my life. indescribable.

when you're searching your soul
when you're searching for pleasure
how often, pain is all you find
when you're coasting along and nobody's trying too hard
you can turn around and like where you are..
