Valentina talks up Rachmaninov's own interpretation, and puts down the Russian School all she can, but actually she has a classic Russian School sound, and it is a good thing too, because trying to sound like R. himself today is entirely unrealistic, it would not be compatible with the reproduction systems, with what the audiences want, the critics would butcher you, and you would not have any kind of a sale. A big 'thank you' for this documentary, Pieter. It is wonderful that you have devoted such energy to such a worthy cause, I know her fans are grateful. Also, thanks for recommending this documentary during the 'etudes' Ustream program...I have new ideas about Rachmaninoff after watching this.

One last question: do you know when she will be live on the radio in Chicago? She mentioned something about a recent radio performance it but I was not able to write it down before it disappeared...

@MellowCypriot : Hi, thanks so much for your kind and appreciative words, it was great in Hannover and all of us there really loved the wonderful response from you and all the others. Great fun&great art happening! :) When Val had finished her playing she loved switching to another keyboard and talking to you in the chatroom. She once told me btw that she loves playing live on radio. I didn't catch Val's chat about playing live on a Chicago radio station, so unfortunately I don't know the date.

He says "Now for a take - Poot, make it mezzopiano there - sorry Valentina". Sound engineers enjoy letting you play for 10 minutes thinking you are recording - and then saying "Now for a take". This joke is inevitable in a recording session but still works every time. BTW Michael Fine, before saying she is the "only" player like this, you need to check out Emmanuelle Swiercz. The website is easy to find.

@brilliantcorners She has a beautiful touch, indeed, quite different from Valentina´s. But you must agree that Valentina´s technique is far superior, as well as the sound she takes out of the piano.

Great documentary. Lisitsa and Rachmaninov, and what promise to be exceptional recordings - a true gift to be treasured. And, from 1.28, either through creative editing or happy chance, a visual link as Valentina shows her beautifully expressive fingers, followed seconds later by the geat man himself.

I was so blessed to have heard Valentina and Hilary Hahn perform together in Chicago's Orchestra Hall -summer 2009. Incredible! Two amazing artist playing such difficult music. Ive's, Bartok, Ysaye, and Brahms. Got to meet both after the recital...such wonderful, friendly people!

Awesome, Valentina is not just the most or one of the most brilliant pianist on earth, but she's also a incredible person, she's so friendly and she's always smiling, she has a great energy. Her kindness and wisdom are clear as crystal. She's defenitly my idol, one day I would like to meet her just to congratulate her and say, from the bottom of my heart, that she is a outstanding human being.
