  • I love XTC. I hate this song.

It's allowed folks. Don't take Youtube comments so personally.

  • @Lewelltam Of course it's allowed. So is spitting in public : C }

One of the greatest aspects of XTC was the huge range of material they generated (past tense... sniff), covering so much stylistic ground that the odds are there's plenty of songs that may not float ones boat. Hate? I dunno...

  • freaking amazing to get a peek behind the veil like this. thank you so much, lumpy.

  • Absolutely amazing-thanks

  • what is that first chord?

  • Colin is probably not digging that diarrhea of the guitar Andy was trying to run over the song. The eventual release got it so right. That Wave would have made a great performance piece of XTC were a live band and had the overhead of a Floyd. That Wave going into "Then She Appeared" is one of rock music's heights--deserves to be remembers but it's a secret to us XTC maniacs.

  • To those that have commented on Colin in this video...

I have no great insight into Colin's mindset, but having followed these guys since 1979, and having seen loads of video of them, this seems to be his general demeanor when playing. I would say that by his body language in this video, he is into it more that his facial expression might indicate. I'm guessing that it has more to do with him being filmed and not liking it.

  • They look rather bored or unhappy ( e.g. Colin Moulding 2@ 1:27!) What's wrong?!

  • Moulding never smiles, even tho he's luckier than Ringo.

  • QUIET!!!! Genius at work here!

  • I wonder, seeing Dave and Colin in this, if they somehow knew that they'd have to be working unskilled jobs over the next few years to make ends meet because they hadn't sufficient income coming in to pay the bills. And just how wrong is that?

  • WOW!!!! One of my favourite tracks from that album...

and to see Dave Mattacks playing his so so cool stuff..

  • Genius

  • Dave Mattacks on drums!

  • andy gettin the friggin job done on the acoustic. sheezus guys a friggin genius fuhgedaboudit

  • What a wanker!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Shit

  • Even if Gus shot some of the footage, apparently Virgin HATED Gus's mix of the album and was canned for the final cut, which Andy Partridge and engineer Nick Davis re-mixed to Virgin's approval.

  • Fantastic, Hope there's more. Oh, and by the way, if you're going to use the word "intelligence" as an accolade, you might want to look uo the proper spelling before posting it.

  • thanks man, give me more, more more more more more more more more more, more more more more more more more more moremoremore, more more more more more more more more more, more more more more more more more more moremoremore more more more more moremoremore, more more more more more more more more more, more more more more more more more more moremoremore more more more, more more more more more more more more moremoremore more more more more more more more more, more

  • Now THAT'S what I call an amazing piece of footage! It's jaw-dropping stuff, man. Thank you very, VERY much for this!

  • I wish there were video of the "The Wag" studio outtake, where Andy starts doing funny voices and impressions of The Cure, Bob Dylan and The Smiths peforming this song.

  • I can't find my lips...

  • What an fantastic clip! XTC is the most underated band ever. My personal favorite. Easily compared to the intelegence of the Beatles.

  • What a treat to watch! Longtime XTC fan. Thanks for posting it.

  • WOW! I can't believe this footage exists! THANK YOU! Would you please post more???????

  • holy cow, this was a great look behind closed doors. thanks for uploading it.!

  • XTC = SMARTEST AND BEST BAND EVER!

  • you bet he is : C }

  • Is David Mattacks playing drums?

  • @ibazookajoe

    yes, it is.

  • I think I've died and gone to heaven.

It may be no golden fleece, but human riches have definatly been released.

    Awesome!

  • Holy cow, sweet video! Brilliant bass line on this one!

  • agree, wonderful bassline. 'siralexandergibson' is clearly a philistine, bereft of taste.

  • im sorry you were obviously born without ears or a functioning brain. either way... my condolences...

  • don't stop believin' - hold on to that feelin'.

  • siralexandergibson = Andy Partridge in troll mode

  • @lumpytwangage You think so? Anyway - thanks for posting this gem! :)

  • @kettlezone In the XTC video realm, anyway : C }

  • @siralexandergibson Yes, it's so bad it's worse than good pop. And by good pop I mean Brittany Spears. But strangely, being worse than good pop is actually being better than bad pop, which is also Brittany Spears. So Andy Partirdge must have evolved into Brittany Spears via an Argentinian sex-change.. QED.

  • @siralexandergibson Obnoxiously bad comment! :)

  • @siralexandergibson maybe you should learn what obnoxious means before forming an opinion

  • pretty cool

  • Stunning !! Come back chaps, Please !!!!

  • bloody hell jesus christ mother of mary! This is the best find on You Tube I've found in AGES!!!

Cheers for posting - possibly the best song on the album...but then again there are 16 other greats!!!!

  • Peter Pumpkinhead?!

  • Yep that would be one of them!

  • Hello Shorty! Kettering T FC not doing so well these days. :-( Up the Stanley!

  • HERRO!!! We had our FA Cup run this year - that'll do us for now! You still down London way? I spose I should pop into the forum once in a while!

  • Well done Kettering. Yes - still in Londres. Old Forum is still 'out of order' but Blushift started XTCbackporch if you want to join. Much luv n stuff.

    Accy Exiles. :-)

  • @shortyktfc

Seriously! What a great find! This is one of my top 3 fave XTC songs ever, and I certainly never thought I'd see actual footage of the recording session. Thank you SO MUCH, lumpytwangage, for posting this!

  • Wow, how the hell did you find this?

  • Back in the Steam Age, before bit-torrenting rose up out of the swamp, there was the nefarious world of tape trading, spurred on by some subscribers of the XTC fanzines, The Little Express and Limelight.

  • HOLY!!! That is incredible to see/hear. One of my favorite XTC albums.

  • Certainly doesn't get any better than this. Andy Partridge - master at work.

  • Thank you so much for posting this! "Nonsuch" is an album that changed my life and is my personal favorite. This song is just terrific and it's a treat to see them bang it out, especially knowing how trippy it is on record.

  • You're quite welcome. Yeah, this track is definitely one of the highlights of Nonsuch, along with Rook, Humble Daisy... amongst others. I'm always a fool for seeing/hearing demos/production versions of stuff that I love.

  • Fantastic!!!! Thanks for posting.

  • I assume these were Nonesuch sessions. Super cool. When is XTC going to record again? They belong on the UK pantheon of bands along with the Beatles, Stones, Who, Zep, Radiohead and maybe a few others.

  • Yes, Nonsuch it is, at Chipping Norton Studio.

  • @letdown201 Belated response to your question "When is XTC going to record again?": Andy has stated that XTC will not be recording or performing again, that none of them likely want to work together again. A shame, I know but nothing lasts forever.

  • Great studio rehearsal, thanx for posting this.
