Not to knock either Stu (whom I love listening to) or his new bass (I still own and play a customized Washburn 6-string) but the David Eden rig behind him will make almost any bass sound great. Don't take my word for it, try it yourself and see. I'll probably check this beastie out when I see it on the rack.
IMO, no bass is worth more than $1k. Some basses have distinct tones, that's a given, but this particular bass has a very generic tone even with the fancy pickups and electronics. Get a pro rig and you can make even the cheapest production-line bass sound like a beast. Sorry, Stu...but this thing is nowhere near worth the $3k price tag.
@Raro404 Dude, people don't just pay money for how the bass sounds. Construction and workmanship all have a price tag. I wouldn't want a bass which sounds great but has horrible balance, awful construction and bad fret work that pokes at your fingers. I can't say much about Stu's signature bass, but certain basses are well worth the extra money paid for them.
@taufoofar - except Fenders, they just cost a lot whether or not they are worth it LOL. Some are good though, in any brand... I don't play bass but a Music Man I picked up freaked me out how great it played and sounded.
If you find a very good instrument DON'T THINK just get it home.
Any good instrument. Being a lefty I ordered my MM stringray and it was a £1500 shitter...
All these big brand guitars are factory guitars. They produce shitters to occassional good'uns and rare special ones... even of the same instrument!
If you ever get the chance, try a luthier's guitars (a luthier is a person who makes guitars). They are a whole new level. And a shitter will never leave the hands of a good luthier!
@naycnay noboby to this day has come up with a better design of bass than that of fender. I've owned high end stuff. There was always the problem of the tone being too specific, and not being able to cut it for serveral genres of music. a precision could do any. even a crappy one from the late 70's would do. that's just one example.........
@BassFever74 Sure they have. My basses are better than Fenders. I can get that tone, a lot more tones. You might notice that most of the virtuoso bassists don't play Fenders. Fender are good, but generic.
@DavidRavenMoon I tend to like the "Deluxe" model Fenders, especially the ones from 1990-1994. Those have the kubicki electronics...and the lace sensors. The best of both worlds. They still "feel Fender". Fender also have a certain look that fits in with any genre.
@DavidRavenMoon Well most working bassists lean toward fenders or something fenderish. Also many great bass players play fender (marcus miller, steve bailey, etc). Fender makes some good basses (key word is some) but the problem is that you can get more bass for your money somewhere else. They also hold their value better so in a way you get what you pay for. By the way I don't own any fender products and unless I could ever get a nice american j bass for cheap I probably never will.
@naycnay I agree! I became a luthier because I wasn't finding a bass I really loved. You can make a factory bass better with some fretwork and a good setup. Companies like Fender barely dress and level the frets, and their hardware and pickups are the cheapest they can get to keep profits high.
Yup, and its not limited to Fender. All big production guitars. Gibson/Fender/Ibanez yada-yada. Its all about profit margins, not good guitars. The 2010+ Gibson Les Paul's now have random hollowing to make them lighter (and gives worse tone), the build quality is horrible and the hardware is cheap. Its the logo that demands the stupid money.
I cant wait to make my own guitar. As a lefty we get even more runtier guitars. So I'll be building this summer!
Oh and agreed, Fenders are nice, I adore J-Basses, but finding a good one is difficult. I own a 2000 USA Stingray and the amount of work I needed to do to it was crazy. Its better now, but still not as nice as some I have played.
I envy the variety of righty guitars on ebay. I would much rather spend £2k on an old G/F with some mojo and get it set up properly than offer them the money they command today. £1k for a late 50s/early 60s LP-DC Jr? Yes please.
That bass sounds pretty cool, but $3,200? Damn, that's steep. I'd have to hear it in person to value the full quality of it, I'm thinking. I'm more than content with my fender stu hamm urge II w/emg actives that I put in there.
Just checked the Washburn website, and the MSRP of the US-made 4-string w/ bridge saddle piezos is $3,200. At that price point, you're sure as hell going to get a good bass, but at that price point, I could also buy a Sadowsky and get a better bass.
