  • SLOW IT DOWN!

  • Don't forget to include in your models the millions of people suffering in prisons. I don't just mean "prisoners of war" or genocides, but those convicted of crimes. ALL consequences must be considered. They cannot simply be brushed away because of some stupid political ideology (not accusing YOU of doing this).

  • Fantastic work! Since 1986 simulations such as these have inspired in me radical ideas on how to "solve" - i.e. minimize - suffering and maximize justice. Formalize these ideas with game theory - don't just simulate on the computer!

  • for those of you who think that schools operate like they did when you were in one,

when left to the devices of teachers this is what happens,

  • You're not realizing what its about, don't focus on every little detail look at the big picture.

  • wow. amazing experiment. Looked at the extra information, very well done. Would have taken alot of time to get this working properly without fault!

  • Too Fast .not able to make any sense!

  • 2 fast, cant watch it

im not gonna rewind and pause everytime text comes on ¬¬

  • Where does one find the version where one can actually read what is happening?

  • See NWO Solution

  • You may be trying to do good with this project, but its going to be manipulated for evil. I was amazed when I heard of this project. In bed with the NWO eh bud?

  • Interesting lesson and not a surprising outcome.

  • the text appeared for such a short duration that this video was extremely annoying to watch.

  • you sir, are a sucker

  • it will back fire on them. I know it may see hard to believe with fellows like this kontekzt flaunting his socially conditioned ignorance..

but they will fall, mark my words

  • Wow! that was a great video, I really enjoyed watching that! It really interest me. It caught my attention really quickly.

  • My twitter is ChrissyOfficial

  • Great, no thanks to twatter for helping women from keeping their mouth shut like they should be in the first place

  • This is impressive.

  • There is something similar at McGill for a class called peacebuilding that tries to help students learn about the process of conflict prevention, break out and negotiation, it lasts 9 days 8 hours a day and everything is simulated through e-mail interaction and face to face meeting with students playing different roles that would exist in a real conflict

  • the point is accross the first 15 sec or less.. good but too long of the same visuals....

  • What you're doing with your classes is fantastic. One question, though -- what sort of ethics approval/privacy legislation hoops do you have to jump through? From a Canadian perspective, this would have to be "opt-in" and not mandatory, because essentially it could be viewed as forcing students to "publish" for marks.

You can reply here or DM me on Twitter. Same ID. Cheers.

  • Sorry, but if you've ever attended university you'd know that it's much more than sitting in class or memorizing useless facts. It's more about real world interaction and relationship building, learning organizational skills, and focusing on critical thinking that will ultimately enhance the efficiency and raw output of students when they hit the real business market. Besides, this is Anthropology which is much more centered around human interaction than anything else.

  • Looks like the modern world system as described by wallerstein. Would be cool to have some systemic breakdowns aswell, in the lines of Andre Gunder Frank and Jonathan Friedman.

  • Excellent college project! I would love for college & high school cirriculum's across the world to incorporate more interactive experiences like this.

Classroom book lectures have a legitimate role but there are college classes I've taken where as I sit here 8 years later, I honestly can't remember a single fact from that class for the entire semester...

...the students of this project however, will most likely remember it for the rest of their lives.

  • I'm currently at St. Olaf College up in the bitter wilderness of Northfield, Minnesota as a First Year. You, my friend, couldn't have been more correct in your declaration. I took Medieval Scandinavian/Viking History my first semester here and was absolutely blown away by all the things I learned. Right now I'm also in Ancient Warfare learning about the Greeks and Romans and the political strife that affected their civilizations, it doesn't get much more interesting than this!

  • radical!

  • good to see students useing technology for a useful experiment for once good idea.

  • good to see students useing technology for a useful experiment for once good idea.

  • Superb work. As always.

  • Today we are all impressed by big numbers of people (starving, dying in natural catastrophes, illnesses..) but OUR very OWN world hasnt much changed since the beginnings of times! our circles of friends, acquaintances..

We all know a few people. But the world population has exponentially increased, never forget this!

  • absolute numbers of people compared in different times DOES NOT give any INFORMATION..

Need relativity, percentages. What percentage of the world is starving today? died in WW2? ...etc.

  • brilliant experiement.

  • Very interesting (and fast :D) but I didn't get what's Twitter Rule in all this... Maybe it's an inspiration to it's istant messaging service?

  • This is by far the most ingenius teaching methodology I've ever come across for creating mindful citizens. Congratulations, you rock! I wish I would have had you as an anthropology teacher. You need to write a book. This needs to be taught in every single classroom across the united states.

  • Amen to that.

  • Rather culturally biased to think this should only be taught in the states. Education techniques in general need to be customized according to available resources and technologies around the world.

  • You're exactly right. Considering that you said "Education techniques in general need to be customized according to available resources and technologies around the world" and this specific technique would be excellent for teaching students in the United States considering the resources and technologies available, I don't see how it's culturally biased for me to say that.

  • However I didn't use your criteria in coming to my conclusion, i used my own. I based it not upon available resources, but on the specific need of the cultural group in which this technique is being applied (american students). They lack motivation because they lack perspective, relevancy, and they lack a strong link between academia and the real world (other than the possibility of a degree getting them a job). These 3 thing each student need learn, This technique teaches those three things.

  • you are a great professor.

I wish you were teaching my Anthropology class.

    good job.

  • Would like to know more of the game system and rule set ?

  • I would also like to know the game system and rule-set. As a teacher, I'd like to know how to do this in my classroom.

  • ah,youth! but soon the dream ends and everybody is a bitch!

  • Wee! So faaast!

  • Even if you make something like that with the final goal of making a perfect world you will ended up in the same thing. Sadly that is the human nature.

  • I understood it all.

  • We are royally screwed if we cant find a way to reign in the corporations....

  • wall-e. amen.

  • I don't mind pausing it, but the text frames were often too fast to even do that accurately.

  • It makes perfect sense..when you watch it on meth =] lolz

  • Whoa. Did that just say that it ended with no resources left and everyone starving to death?

    Awesome.

  • SUBLIMINAL MESSAGING

  • wtf is that??

  • too fast - whats the deal - redo

  • Too fast. Can't read it.

  • This would have been a cool concept, but it was executed poorly. The frames moved too fast for me to understand what was going on, and the text is barely long enough for me to read.

It gave me a major headache trying to keep up.

  • Seems like an old Anthro exercise (Hey Man, Let's Build A World And Do All Kinds Of Meaningful Related Stuff, Yeah!) but the video pace didn't slow down enough to show anything unique. The hyper pace filming misplaced an emphasis on speed. Grade 'Y' for 'Yawn'.

  • I found the video very interesting, but it moved much too fast and cutting in every few minutes with unpleasant snippets of comparison made it feel too moralistic and preachy.

I think several longer installments would have been better, and cutting the morals down to one per installment would have given the veiwer time to absorb the points, rather than feeling run over by them.

If you don't give people time to accept the facts, they tend to turn defensive.

  • Yeah, well it'd be nice to have things where you can read what's onscreen for more than 2 seconds. :P

  • that theme music is this? please if anyone knows, please tell me

    I would be very grateful

    thanks

  • Your tuition dollars at work. What a waste of time. Glad I don't have kids going to KSU. :/

  • mindless

  • This video has been reviewed by Two Guys Named Rob.

To see what others have to say about this review go to twoguysnamedrob[,]com

  • Ok so the purpose in this video is what? I was totally confused the entire time. I didnt understand what these guys were trying to portray. I am wondering how it can say that our history is fit into this time frame less than 5 mins! Come on now! NO way! That is an over statement.

  • this is dumb and boaring actuley i think who ever made this is a dickhead

    whats with the fast foward

  • I think this video is an example of how fast frames move nowadays.

A few years ago I could walk into a pub with a few TVs and could tell if they were on the same channel.

NOWaways, I look like a rooster looking at the TVs in the same place; it's rare the frame is on the same visual during the time it takes to turn your head.

    The question is,

is new media giving us A.D.D.?

  • Someone please tell me this is not a college class project...

  • Words can't express how horribly wrong and useless this project was--it was as if they purposely took the most meaningless parts of history and tried to express them in the most meaningless way possible. It's expressed best by the idiot in charge, referring to the "most important questions now facing humanity such as those of global inequality, globalization, culture loss, environmental degradation, and in the worst case scenario, genocide"

It boggles my mind that someone could have so naive

  • a view of the world that they would purposely ignore positive statements of value and pretend that everything is morally equivalent, socially equivalent, functionally equivalent--someday these people will have to wake up and see that history is defined by battles, where the better men won. Not everyone played an equal role, and the world has the British Empire, the US and capitalism to thank for the wealth it has.

Oh, and playing with Froot Loops and social netowrks sounds neat, but is useless.

  • interesting.

  • Big fucking deal. It's a bunch of kids playing civilization w fruit loops. Any solutions? Or just teaching them how fucked up the world is?

  • I read the details on your website and it is so brilliant. just brilliant. I wish every one who wants to join the UN would be required to take your course for a full semester and then pass a test to get into the UN. You are a genius.

  • The problem with the constructs that underlie such simulations is that they are formulated to produce outcomes in line with the preconception(s) of the creator(s). So while they don't always come out the way one thinks they might, they are by no means meaningful simulations of the things they pretend to be symbolic of.

  • Interesting....

  • iberollin- Me write good sentence now...me include verb...me isn't very attractive

  • i love the music in this video, any idea who is it by?

  • this should have been shorter.

  • seriously... couldn't a picked a better song! dammit my ears hurt!

  • Who Cares???

  • when were romanian women created?

  • With a real job. I don't have anytime for the people in my computer. Social Networks preserve a stratified underclass. It isn't the people who use computer to network who have the power. It's the ones who use the information in this so called open network... SHOOT YOUR PC!

  • lol freak much?

  • +1 for social networking sites suck. The blind hunger for narcissism and a misplaced need for a real human connection. It isn't very attractive.

  • Let the revolution begin

  • would looooove doing that at my school... even tho 90% of the ppl there are dumbasses who barely pass the iq limit for being retarded. gr8 video though

  • sad thing is, simulations are irrelevant. there is also a, i believe, teleological aspect to our society that differs from such simulations. its a toy to help you understand the parameters, to visualize certain abstract concepts such as optimising resource use, balance of aggression and pacifism etc.

as such, its on a level with philosophy. nice but useless. how is this put to use ? it cant be. politicians learn things the other way round, in reverse.

  • I didn't thumb you down, but your argument is sort of weak. You agree that simulations help participants to visualize abstract concepts, how statistical variance changes outcomes, etc. How is that useless? I'd recommend looking at some serious books on simulation -- you'd be amazed at how different things would be now without this sort of simulation. It's not a toy but a powerful tool that helps you step around the limitations of your brain - if done right, simulation helps sidestep intuition.

  • honestly, if you need that simulation to visualize whats going on, youre lacking something.

im saying that a simulation like this is a nice preliminary at best. i think it doesnt save experts from having to delve into the gritty details. imho its a roadmap, and in that i agree to what you said.

but i seriously think simulations arent the shit, so to speak.

someone has to feed them in the first place, haha ;)

  • and perhaps you could point to be a book on simulations - but not the david deutsch deus ex machina kind of crap please. id be interested to look at some successful implementations of such simulations.

ps: i know nasa brainstorms for example, but thats a different story. its experts on the run, being creative.

  • Well, I'm not an expert on simulations so there might be better books, but off the top of my head you could look at the first chapter of "Shared Fantasy" by Gary Fine - the book is about role-playing games but contains a short history of military simulations and details why they were so effective.

From there, it's better to search for a book related to your academic discipline. There are more for the sciences (especially computer science), but simulation is integral to many fields of study.

  • "if you need that simulation to visualize whats going on, youre lacking something. "

Clearly you don't deal with many complex systems. Once you get data sets that are large enough, there is no one who can keep track of everything without a model.

To be totally clear, I'll point out that math - and even numbers - are a simulation. You don't really need it to keep track of a few things, but once you have more than a few of anything, simulation enables precision of thought and action.

  • nah, in molecular biology we use models - simplifications - to approximate and make it easier to consider what "going on".

we dont use such simulations as in the video - up to now i don't know of any one exact hard science that does in fact (apart from brainstorming and models, but thats a diff. story)

  • im saying that i dont think role-played simulations are good enough, except to get a very basic feeling of whats going on. nothing you couldn't achieve without the role played simulation imho.

  • all too easy, dont need simulations to understand whats going on. its all about metastability on multiple levels of interaction and communication. in the future, well reach an ideal "entropy" which will reflect what we call an ideal solution, making the best of what weve got. efficiency.

  • the shaking of the parameters is what we call evaluating, a constant parameter is tradition.

  • Another great video with a lot of meaning behind it. Still a little too fast, but it is worth watching a few times! I love the concept!@

  • cool

  • too fast

  • The title cards are shown too quickly. Please don't slow it to D.W. Griffith-speed, Murnau will do.

  • people are emerging in the alphabet...the alphabet is a vision ... the alphabet is emerging also in asia see the youtube video "I am India" this is very important information....

I am not of India I am an US American and believe in advancing

The alphabet is a vision to advance I have the alphabet chart on my site at fathom ex

Good people are overcoming slavery of the evil in our history at this time and no one can stop our choice to be free.

  • Where was this guy when I was an undergrad (or even a doctoral) student? I wish I could take a sabbatical and enroll in his classes for a couple of terms. Also loved his "Anti-teaching" article (check it out in Education Canada, the Spring 2008 edition).

  • pretty cool but way too fast. humanity took a little longer than that to grow

  • agree with all above - wish I'd done something a imaginative as this in my own social anthropology classes. and.... slow it down! had to pause continually to read the text...

  • I do agree. Brilliant idea maybe a bit to compress. Can i have 5 centuries in 5minutes ;-D

Love what you do a bit more after each new Video !!

  • Cool video. But like others have said, the text and visuals really need to be slowed down for it to have its full impact.

  • I seriously wish i knew what was going on here. This is speed up way to much, forget the 5 minutes, make it 10. The map doesn't even make sense to me. Is this a fictional world? Is this somewhere on earth? Are those fancy names for locations I don't know? How does this relate to Twitter? Remake it, I'm interested, and bummed that this video doesn't deliver the message you intended.

Professor Wesch, I wish I could take a course of yours, your a brilliant man.

  • I'd love to see something like this on feminism and the history of sexism.

  • That was fantastic. In four minutes, you showed how market economies have totally screwed the globe, the US as the forerunner of stealing valuable assets from other countries and then paying cheap labor to process same assets. Kudos!

  • I like old video better

  • i would love to have him as a professor when i go to college.

only complain is that i had to pause the video to read the text

  • The ending was creepy.

Global thermonuclear war is about to break out on two fronts, and there's no remaining natural resources to rebuild with when it ends. o.o

  • too fast.....

  • Great job, great concept. Wish it was a bit more detailed about world events that happened, maybe post a full 15-20 min one. One with actual clips with audio, maybe.

  • This sounds a bit like "NationStates(.net)" except not as complicated... and sort of forcing Twitter upon it. It seems an awkward fit, but congratulations on making it work.

  • The text went by far too fast to read, but other than that it was good.

  • The text flashed by too fast for me to read :(

  • i thought so too..

  • Very good video.

Not as inspirational as the The Machine is Us/ing Us

The text appears very rapidly making it impossible to read.

I know the whole idea is to create a FF world but the text should be at least slower so that ppl make sense of it.

I criticize because I envy all the students who are in your course:)

  • glad to see you finally put out a new video. Didnt make a whole lot of sense. I understood the idea but the video was kinda weird. Thanks though.

  • cool

  • That was incredible!

  • The music was really great! Any info on the music?

  • whoopsi nevermind, it was MEA with "atmospheric".

  • Very nice to see another video out from you chaps. I was wondering if you'd ceased the experimentations.

  • i need a version in slow motion. looks very cool nonetheless.

  • Very good,!

  • Thanks for sharing!

  • Awesome experiment.

  • Good one sir, very well thought out experiment and wonderful video.

  • its time for us to open our eyes
