I interviewed Al Campbell years ago & he clearly admited this was not his song (still he enjoyed making specials of it under request), Al revoiced it for his "Studio One tribute" album a few years ago & he said it was a bredda named Alan Campbell who did sing it... I also Interviewed Johnny Osbourne and he was sure that it was a Freddy McKay tune, when I told him what Al Campbell was saying, he insisted that it was Freddie Mckay & that he even saw Freddy sing it live in his shows.. seen !
Yes, this is clearly NOT Al Campbell. The voice is VERY different. Do you have a transcript of the Al Campbell interview? I'd be interested in getting ahold of it. Thanks!
@djkilabeat : check it on heartical. net/reggae-dancehall-interview,al-campbell.en.html, I translated it in French so u will have to reverse the itw on google trad ! 100% sure it's not AC as he admits it himself !
a really shitty new pop ska band called Pepper stole this bassline and is regurgitating it to a younger, more materialistic crowd. What a shame that 99.99% of those people will never know that this is the original.
i'm beginning to think that studio one didn't actually exist. i think it was just something artists put on the labels when they knew they were recording something really REALLY good. just one studio/producer couldn't physically have made all this amazing music. i'm beginning to think the same thing about the black ark too
To all of you who is having problem wanting to no who is singing this song, let me set the record str888 for you. his name is CAL CAMPBELL he is a long time studio one singer that use to sing with the Soul Defenders Band out of linstead st.catherine,a very good friend mine,we call him slim..the rest of band members morgie the keyboard player leader, privy guitar, daley drums, junior soul vocalist and some more i cant remember..
i believe the i's if ya say its not al campbell. who ever it was sing this tune , they sang a timeless reggae tune for the ages. RESPECT. "render your heart and not your garments "
@wannabreeder what I hear happend was that Mr. Dodd got vex at the original singer for some reason and tributed it to Al Campbell instead. But If Al Campbell himself say it was a mixup then that is probably closer to the truth.
Killa tune though (this would be the original cut but they named the riddim after Johnny Osbournes Truh and Rights)
This is Al Campbel, from Studio One Pirates Choice, but the riddim, you can tell by the name of the album, is played by many artists as Johnny Osbourne and others
i've never heard this version till today! and i loved it! I only heard Pepper's version "STONE LOVE" :) thumbs up if you've heard that version<3

Al Campbell: No, it's not - that tune deh, is not really me a sing that tune deh, yunno, but me sing a version of it still, for Mr Dodd.
Q: So is that another guy in the Thrillers who took the lead on that track?
A: No, is a bredda name Alan, I think the name's Alan. And some of the names get mixed up.
