Sorry if someone asked this already and I missed it, but did you go with the bridge or body mount? If you have done both, which is easier to mount in your experience?
Do you play in this video always with the CC pickup in the neck or also together with the bridge pickup? I play in my band sometimes country (i need the twang single coil pickup) and sometimes i play some authentic blues boppers, jump blues, etc ... so the CC is maybey a good solution.
Hey Tim, if i buy the humbucker sized pickup from lollar will i need to make any mods to my gibson les paul traditional pro? I want to put this pickup in the neck, and on the website its says the neck is only 2.9k, i have no idea what that means. Can anyone help?
hey Tim. sounds great. this video inspired me to get a Lollar CC in my Nash tele. but the guitar came with a 250K pot that seems to be to dark for the CC. i ordered a 500k but am worried that may be too bright for the bridge PU (Lollar 52...BRIGHT). have you had any issues with this? what pots do you use? any recommended caps or anything to match the CC with the tele bridge? thanks!
Hi Matty, I use that very combination and it works well for me. the CC is very warm so I keep it down flush with the guard so it balances better with the bridge. This also make the pup seem a but less bass heavy The BS is a bridge pup that will mate well with the CC, you can check my 3Charlie video to hear that. As far as pots go I use the 250K with no special cap changes etc. So much of this is subjective so I'm sorry I can't be more definitive. Hope you get it how you like it.
Calling this a Charlie Christian pickup is deceptive. Has the look but not the construction of the original. Sounds nice and Lerch's playing is great but the CC moniker and cosmetic facade appears to be a marketing hook more than a genuine, authentic repro product.
Tim, I have seen most of your videos and you are really a very gifted guitarist. After hearing this demo I just purchased the pickup and will install it in my HexaVariax. I think blending the CC with a little acoustic will sound great. What pot and capacitor values are you using?
@d34d1yinf3rn0 I use mine with heavy overdrive and it responds well. I do have to max out the tone when using distortion or overdrive because the pickup is very warm by nature. It also drives pedals and amps VERY easily so even without turning up the Gain on the pedal or amp you will get breakup. It's the perfect pickup for bluesy pushed-amp breakup while retaining clarity and harmonics.
One thing, I never got the most out of my lollar CC until I used a master volume box with my amp.
Where are your Pickups set (Treble/Bass Side) Fretting the last fret? Man, I'm having a bit of trouble with the Bridge Pickup being struck by the Low E Bass String...I'm a bit of a Wailer! "Heavy Handed"
My Pickups are set at Neck...(Bass; 4/64Treble; 2/64) Bridge...(Bass; 4/64 Treble; 4/64)
I think Jason likes them real close...
2nd...On your Amp...are you cutting the Bass quite a bit? These Pickups have a strong bass Presence...My name is Doc...
Thank you for the demo. Sounds great! I've been thinking of putting them in my artcore "jazz box". Any chance you can put up a video of some Charlie Christian humbucker routes in action? I would appreciate it very much.
AWESOME TONE! What deluxe reverb amp are you using, the newer re-issue or an older handwired version. I have to say you can't get any better tone than that. I am about to buy some pickups for my tele and looks like I want that Charlie Christian in the neck and his 52 in the bridge. Thanks for your video's!!!!!
I have no experience with those types of pickups(I understand they use huge 38 gauge wire)but it sounds like it has some alnico 2 sponginess but with more punch than they might have with the typical 42/43 gauge wire.
Thanks to your great videos, I went ahead and bought a Tele on eBay that happened to have already installed a set of Lollar Vintage T pickups. Can't wait to play it through my Blues DeVille!
Really like the sound you have here. I don't know a whole lot about jazz, but I certainly love what you are playing here.... Very melodic and interesting. I hope to build a guitar with that pickup in it some day.
I'm a big fan. From what I can tell, it sounds identical to the regular Tele-sized one. Especially when you play it dirty through a Blues Jr., because I myself own a Blues Jr. I put a Weber Blue Dog in the back though. Fantastic upgrade, IMO. Very chimey.
Hey, great playing, man! I definitely dig the jazz and the jump on all three videos. I popped the HB-sized CC in my '72 Thinline RI, along with a Lollar Imperial in the bridge. I hope that one day I can measure up to your playing, and I'll do it with a CC!
What type of Jazz were you playing in this demo, as in a good place to start learning, I've been playing rock for a decade and I want to learn some Jazz guitar.
I think Ted Greene's Modern Chord Progressions is a fantastic book for getting a good chordal vocabulary. As far as Jazz is concerned you just have to get into it and do a lot of listening. Good luck , thanks for checking it out.
Hey, bit the bullet and bought a Thinline telecaster 69... made out of mahogany! I love the look of it! also got a nice neck to go on it etc. Ill get the pick up once the guitar arrives... and will see how we go!
I get what you are saying about the hollow sides. I think I will go for that, a little cheaper, and lighter too.... Ok, one more question... how do you think it would sound through a Roland cube? I really appreciate you taking the time to answer these questions mate, And I really enjoy your playing and enthusiasm.
If you can find one of the real old cubes, the orange ones, that's what Ed used. I think they sound fantastic for a darker jazz tone with a bit of compression, I frequently play thru the current one and they are ok. I like the Cube 30 on the blackface model at lower volumes but at louder volumes they get thin. If you can find an old orange one snag it!
I don't think it would be much different since the thinline isn't hollow behind the pickup. only around the sides. So the player has a bit of a different feel but the listener doesn't perceive a difference. Try it and let me know what you think.
Ed played thru a solid state amp, a Roland Cube, so his tone is a bit darker and less, well tubey. He also used a Humbucker in his later recordings (in the neck position). Although I saw some youtube videos were he still had a single coil and I prefer that tone.
Yeah, I am also massively inspired by Ed, not that I try to sound like him, I just like they way he never... "crumbles" up, he is always on top of what he is playing, like its a first instinct, effortless.
Hey that is really great. its the sound I been searching for in a guitar that I want (owned archtops for years but... just too bulky to travel with!). What sort of strings are you using and how thick? I prefer flatwounds. I am gonna get this combo soon.
I use D'Addario 11-49 on this one and 12-52 on my "jazz setup" (video coming soon) In a week or so I'll post a new vid of my Jazz tele with 3 Charlies, Neck, middle and the neck Bridge CC. Stay tunned
