glow plugs probably need replacing. Maybe one is week, but, not bad enough to trigger the fault sensor light. I have a 98 E300TD. If I start my engine before the glow plug indicator goes off, it will sound exactly like that. So, my guess is your glow plugs are not doing the job.
How many miles you got on it, I noticed the badge on your grille that Mercedes gives you once you reach 160,000 miles. I have a 1997 Mercedes E320 and I just love it.

Lets see 6 degrees Fahrenheit, Diesel, not plugged in all night.. it only sounds like that until it warms up.. Plut it has around 250,000 miles
