  • This dance looks like a lot of fun!

  • This is the most exciting and energetic version of this dance I've ever seen! Way to go!

  • You're real cosmopolitan! I think you're Ashkenazi.

  • In my first comment, i mean are you of Romanian descent?

  • Well, my mom's side are all Polish, Russian and... I think Lithuanian, Jews. The other side was also mostly Russian. But I've also got some Greek, Hungarian and French in me. What about you? Are you Romanian? Why did you guess Romanian? :)

  • No, I from Russia. I just think that's dance of Romanian background may be.

  • The Romanian (and Moldovean) hora is from the tradiitonal Jewish dance.. The word "Hora" is literally Hebrew for "circle".

  • Hi, Deborah! Looking good! God bless you!

  • Is she Romanian Israeli?

  • nope. I'm an American Jew. But my parents are Israeli Citizens.

  • Deborah, during this dance, dancers are barefoot always?

  • I love this dance and I love the music it is brilliant : )

  • It's interesting what you said about the re-invention of (Jewish) Hora folk dance... which part of it comes from Arabic dancing and which part comes from Yemen? Just curious :)

  • :) I don't claim to be an expert, but this is what I know:

The spirit of the Yemenite Jews is in classic dances like Bat Teiman and Deror Yikera - the words of those songs come from the Yemenite's unique Zmirot, a set of songs for shabbat. Their culture was influenced by the people of Yemen, whom they lived among from the time of King Solomon.

Then, in the 80's came a lot of new Debka dances by Israeli choreographers - the Debkas are inspired by arabic Dabkes, with very similar movements.

  • San Antonio! Dr. Herbert M. Shelton is smiling down on you from above!

Israeli dancing is very very healthy and lots of fun! Hora Medurah has always been my favorite. It is really easy to do and lots of fun especially when it is speeded up a bit.

  • I like it very much! The word "Hora" is a very old romanian word, a very ancient dans. Your romanian friends from Romania say Hello to you Israel!

  • Thank you! :D

Yes! A lot of the first Israeli Folk dances at the beginning of the century were taken directly from eastern european circle dancing! - like Romanian dancing.

Israeli Dance has been informed by the folk dances of numerous nations, because the galut has taken us to live among so many other cultures... Israel itself is a melting pot. Israelis have come from Morocco, Iran, Ethiopia, Russia, Australia, Britain, Canada, US, Europe, Argentina, etc, etc

  • LONG LIVE ISRAEL!!!!

    Wheres is the Sephardi dances?

  • aw man! send me a video of some sephardi dances and I will add them to our routine immediately!!! :D the learning resources for Israeli Dance are sort of limited sometimes (for those of us who can't afford to go to Karmiel each year).

But hey, we do Deror Yikera and Bat Teiman! does that count?... :D

  • Yeah your right Dreor Yikra and Bat Teiman r Sephardi dances.Thanks.

Unfortunately I dont have any Sephardi dance videos but If I do I will send you.

  • D'ror Yikra and Bat Teyman are Teymani/Yemenite...possibly Mizrachi.Tzur Mishelo is a sephardic dance and the song was originally sung in Ladino. Easy dance as well. The troupe is very good !
