Nice video, I haven't been there in a few years. I'm the guy who designed the 1924......before I left Sandley's for the BN. The boiler is larger than I designed, account Norman used a left-over 2-foot loco firebox.
The Milwaukee Journal paid for the original railroad, and the newer equipment later. The SD-7 diesel is Sandley built, but Tom Atrzburger built the "streamlined" engine as a trade for the 4-4-0 #82, so that it could go to the Preservation Society at the Dells.
Milwaukee lucked out big time! The Oakland (CA) Zoo could definitely use a 2-8-0 or 4-6-0 Sandley to replace its re-bodied no-name gasoline locomotive, which is based on a Buick/GM engine and chain drive.
@train2589 They have two steam locomotives. The #1924 is a 4-6-2 and #1916 is a 4-4-2. The zoo railroad started with #82 which is a 4-4-0. #82 is now on the Riverside and Great Northern RR at the Wisconson Dells with her sister #98. All are Sandley Light Locomotive Works, 15" gauge.
I grew up around trips to the Milwaukee Zoo and rode the train many times in my teens and twenties and a few times with my own daughter. It's great to see the Irwin Maier still chugging. It's lovingly maintained. Irwin Maier was the publisher of the Milwaukee Journal, I think, and donated this to the zoo. Good filming, editing, and and sound track. Production values 9.5+. The SooLine F unit must be a newer addition. I remember they had some kind of FM model once upon a time. Bravo! Bravo
@2010windmill My first time to the zoo railroad was 1964 and a ride behind 4-4-0 #82. Got back there about 1970 to see #82 and #1916. i did not see the 3 1924 UNTILL A VISTIT IN 1997. The F unit was some kind of trade for #82 with the R&GN. It was painted in Santa Fe pass., at first. The #1958 GP-9 or what ever it was, was painted yellow, later changed to red, then later green. Now it has been re-power and the hood cut down on the short end to look more like a GP-38 and painted Milwauke Road.
@2010windmill Comment was to read - I did not see the #1924 until a visit in 1997. Hope to post video of the #1958 diesel soon. I can see how it could look like an FM unit. See picture of old #1958 in green at Tim's Trains ( trains.uoregon.edu/drupal/ ) under Park Train photos-Milwaukee Zoo Steam School
One person operates this size steamer. Although you can get two people in the cab, tightly. I ran 1919 at Little American once and had a fireman who also served as a pilot for me.
Lmao at the one disliker.
