  • This was so great to see. Thanks for posting it.

  • the world wont have another genius like this for a long long time

  • LMAO. "What was it like.... and then, suddenly, being nominated for a Grammy and playing at the Grammy's..." "Well it was the Oscar's."

  • What is the song at about 5:50 that he was recording in the studio?

  • @genaphir i thought it was How To Take A Fall

  • i wanna hear the full song he was recording in the studio it rocked

  • He had a dream that everyone was telling him to get a mechanical hand to replace his real guitar-playing hand.

Because the music business is fucked up and they do pointless things all the time.

  • wonderful video, great job.

  • What's the song at 10:15?

  • @JohnNada80 Waltz No. 1.

  • waltz #1 from XO

  • I don't get it, what's the robot hand?

  • lawl. If you have to ask what the robot hand is, you have failed.

  • Oh fuck you. It's not like you were there when he woke up and he told you about it, you had to ask someone too. Quit acting like a dick.

  • @ MCNewfall - I was joking. :|

  • Sure, dick.

  • THAT'S IT. I'VE HAD IT.

  • i am so tired of pretentious, egotistical assholes laughing at honest questions

  • @TaylorConrad8098 What in the fuck are you talking about?

  • Weirdness

  • wow, 8:51 twin towers in the backround. almost as depressing.

  • really reminds you of how long ago it was, doesnt it.

  • whats the song at 18:03

  • Sounds like "Happiness," from Figure 8.

  • One word- amazing. no wait, two words- FUCKING AMAZING. thanks for this vid. going to show lots of people =)))))

  • Those people were so lucky to have met him, I wish I could have seen him live, too bad I found out about him sooo late, R.I.P my friend!

  • What song is it playing at 10:20?

  • waltz 1

  • Waltz #1

  • 6 years already?

    RIP elliott

  • Amazing.. 15:10 and up for awhile is pretty sad irony :[

    RIP

  • "Well... it was the OSCARS..."

    haha

  • and all I can say about Robot hand, is thats awesome - he doesn't need no stinkin' machine parts.

  • what the fuck is Sam playing with at 20:00 or so??

Thats seriously like the coolest thing ever -

  • Comment removed

  • that's a theremin.

  • So... from what I saw... do your hands interfere with some sort of audio field? That would just be so fun to play with!!

  • looks like the insrument shane stole from his teacher in the show weeds!!!

  • the theremin

  • @shadrussell is a theramin... have you never seen one before?

  • nope - i've heard you can make them at home though.

  • No wonder he didn't like to be interviewed- because the interviewers usually didn't know anything about him or didn't even try to do their research before the interview!!

  • So true-yet he was always gracious & never condescending to interviewers.

Goes to show what a kind-hearted, humble & atypical "rock-star" he truly was. My hero!!

  • i love elliott smith more than most other songwriters in the history of music, but this documentary doesn't do him enough justice - the robot hand thing is kind of annoying. wish there was a more serious one

  • 21:22 It's a HANDsaw. Get it??

  • oh its waltz #1 :)

  • whats the song at around 10 minutes???!!!!!! thank you!!! :) Love You Elliott. <3

  • elliott will never go...

  • hey, is that forest he's walking through in the beginning in Oregon? if so where is it? i'd love to go there.

  • new york

  • Elliott's death is still "undetermined". If you care, please write the detective to look back into this. His fans need to help him.

  • elliot i wish you were here.....

  • this is pretty funny

  • whats the song at 18:13?

  • Happiness

  • Happiness

  • What is the song he is recording at ~ 05:41+ called?

  • I think it is "brand new game"

  • "Well it was the Oscars"

    Nice one.

  • If you look at the handshake that Elliott and that girl have it's kinda awkward - Elliott and the girl shake hands with the same hand, instead of the opposite...lol.

  • elliott smith makes good music

  • What is the instrument thing at 19:35?

  • Theramin

  • When Elliott passed away it hurt all of the people in his life from his close family and friends to the fans who had never met him. This short documentary only makes it more painful since he is no longer with us and now all that is left is an empty space where his brilliance and talent once was.

  • lol the interview at 14 min is just like that interview of that girl from spinal tap

  • I dont know what to write

  • Comment removed

  • Ironically, Elliot(Steve) has been a lifeline for me during a really difficult time in my life- he reminds me so much of my best friend who also died. I sit alone and watch these videos almost every night.

The joy I feel from his brilliance is constantly offset by despair- for obvious reasons. You would never know this if you met me in person- I really don't like to bum people out but it's just getting so hard to keep this stuff to myself. Thanks for listening.

  • I'm addicted to "Plainclothes Man" from the Heatmiser album Mic City Sons, which is a song written by Smith. Some of his songs really chime with me. The continuing popularity of Smith reminds me personally that there are many people in the world that are not happy, and it's not shameful to feel that way.

  • everything is going to be fine.

  • cried

  • lol..they interview that woman around 13-14mins and at the end they ask "can we see your tattoo" shes like "no" and it cuts out lol...funny. but god i love elliott

  • wow I had never heard of this film before but it was funny - especially the drill sargeant...also I want a robot hand now

  • damn, the twin towers are behind him at 9:12

  • Wow..

  • Elliott had one of the prettiest smiles I've ever seen. I wish that more people actually realized that there was way more to him than sadness.

  • i love that version of happiness on the tiny spanish guitar!

  • elliott handled interviews well, he was actually nice to the interviewers even though he didn't like it. Like when he said "well, it was the oscars" he was pretty cool about it, I probably would have been kind of a jerk and laughed.

  • that dude asked him about being nominated for a grammy and playing at the grammys, and elliott goes, "well, it was the oscars..." HAHA. i bet that dude felt like an idiot.

  • dude i kno i busted out laughing man

  • elliot smith was a true artist. he will be missed.

  • this whole scenario is about a dream he had

  • the song he is singing is about jealousy at

  • karaoke

  • I didn't discover Elliott Smith until after his death but I love his music so much. I hope it lives on forever, I'm sure it will.

  • Fantastic that you had made this thing [If you had made it yourself]

It had maked my life better.¨

    Thanks dude :)

  • elliott smith best balladeer of our tyme

  • i seriously i need to watch this

    thanks man for uploading

  • id die if i sat beside him while he played in the forest

  • I just love the beginning when he has the shovel and digs up the guitar.

  • Thank you for posting this, I still love him, and can't believe he's been gone for so long.

  • This is like an episode of the Tim and Eric show with an Elliott Smith soundtrack. All it needs is a Cinco label on the robot hand.

  • wtf? robot hand?! anyone got any idea why steve hanft decided to include this?

  • wikipedia .. search for strange parallel .. it's a dream Elliott had & they made it into a dream sequence. :) LOVE.

  • thank you so much for posting this

    XO

  • I don't understand this robot hand filler.

  • It was from a dream that Elliott had.

    <3

  • Just heard of Elliott Smith.

Guess I'm never gonna know him now, but I love his music anyhow. :>

    I know, I suck. Sorry.

  • There are many in the same boat.

  • I have been listening to Elliott for quit some time now. He is a huge inspiration to me and music is my life. Im so suprised I had never found this before. Im very glad i did :)

  • I love this so much. I really like the fact that the sound is slightly messed up; it gives it a more unique sound and overall look to the documentary.

    We miss ya elliott.

kudos on putting up the whole video ♥

  • it was supposed to be sarcastic.

  • alot of this was meant to be sarcastic. why mention how much he hates interviews then ask the same stupid questions he probably got bludgeoned with every interview he did

  • those were great questions because the answers made me laugh.

  • this is amazing

  • i really like this, though it creeps me the hell out. I like how it becomes increasingly dreamlike, it sort of wraps him up darkness and mystery. And hell, I can understand why mr. sensitive Elliot wouldn't want to be dissected with a straight documentary, it would be flat and fake... this on the other hand, is kind of beautiful and sad...i find it really fitting for who I perceive his character to be , down the home-made quality of the audio and visuals.

  • ya the dreamlike quality is i think a big part of appreciating elliott as an artist. a lot of people maybe take his music/lyrics too literally.

  • Excuse me! Have you seen Elliott Smith?

  • Whats the song at 10 minutes!!!?

  • The song at 5:40 is 'Brand New Game'. The song at 10:00 minutes is 'Waltz #1'...

  • Well i try one of those 3, lol. i think the one i meant was probably Waltz#1. thankyou

  • im in awe by this clip. and not just because it features elliott. its so well done, but in this really cool lo-fi way. its perfect for an elliott documentry. and he seems so happy and relaxed in it. they did a really good job with it.

  • Oh thank god! Im not the only one with a Robot Hand!

    Great video, Elliott is god!

  • Anybody know what happened to that song at 5:40 or if it's on one of his albums and I'm just overlooking it?

  • It's called 'Brand New Game', one of his unreleased songs...

  • "As he moves at the speed of sound through time and space with cheap airline tickets, he lends a hand to all the lonely ones." Great line!

  • The performance where he play 'bottle up and explode!' and 'oh well, okay', does anyone know what show it is? where and when was it?

  • Oh and what was that guy playing at 19:50.. Great Video

  • It's called a Theremin. Really cool instrument, you can play all sorts of weird shit by just moving your hands closer and farther away from the antenna. It controls the tone and the metal part that lays flat controls volume. If you check out the song "Lead Balloon" by Liam Finn he plays a small one with just one antenna.

    <3

  • I remember seeing it in kindagarden, thats why im freaking out about it, its sick.

  • Oh ok, They are a really fun instrument though. I've had one for a couple of years.

    <3

  • This is not really a documentary..

  • lol

    robot hand mon.

  • "tiny"

  • Does anyone know the name of the very first song you hear? x

  • Independence Day.

  • Independence Day.

    nub sauce.

  • Waltz #2

  • Great documentary. Elliott Smith had a great sense of humor. This and Lucky 3 should be released for public consumption.

  • 15:25 - "I think the music business will eventually crush me, but im ready"

    :'(

  • your kidding, right?

  • I wish I could find an excellent quality DVD version of this. The grainy sound doesn't do Elliott justice.

  • amaziiiiing

  • what is this about?

  • Its about a songwriter/singer named Eliott Smith that "killed himsef" or so it was said.

Im guessing this is a documentary or maybe a tribute. His music is amazing you should check into it.

  • Elliott resented the title 'singer/songwriter'.

He said it had the connotations that the person was supposed to make the audience feel just like them.

But you're right, his music is amazing.

  • but he was a singer and a songwriter, no need to jump on someone over something so mundane.

rest assured, Elliott is not hoping you to carry on the torch for him.

  • I didn't think i was 'jumping' on anyone. I was trying to let people know a little more about the way he thought, but hey, I'm no expert.

I don't know if Elliott is 'hoping' for anything, he's dead.

  • 14:05

    "can we see your tattoo?"

    "no"

    LOL!

  • He is a god.

  • its not a mandolin, its a classical nylon string guitar

  • robot hand is the future!

  • I have to reiterate. I love this documentary. Elliott Smith is just so wonderful.

  • thats awesome, he plays happiness on the mandolin

  • my life is complete now that i know this exists.

  • Waltz#2

  • what's the first song?

  • independence day

  • the first song is Waltz#2

  • Can anyone please tell me the name of the song he's playing from around 5:40 - 6:47.

    Thank you

    We all miss ya Elliott

  • it's "brand new game," a song that didn't make figure 8.

  • It's an unreleased song called "Brand New Game"

  • El mano roboto es el temor de qualquier musico de perder la abilidad de tocar su instrumento.

  • ¡muy profundo!

  • hey im kinda new to elliott smith, what is the name of the song that plays while hes digging at the beginning? I really like it

  • waltz #2 It's on the XO album. great song. GREAT album

  • thanks!

  • you might have seen a lot of the videos here on youtube but check out my Elliot smith playlist I'm always adding to it. It's small but oh well. It has a few gems in it.

  • minute 9 there is Elliott and the twin towers on the background

  • He was magical and captured the heart and soul of anyone who gave him 3 minutes to open the mind to him...
