A better method would be to make a 5x5 room around the spawner, fill up any extra space. Then place a water scource in a corner, and in the nxt corner, dig down 5 blocks and make a canal leading to a lava blade, then a stream to a collection point.

Use the lava mob traps... they are MORE efficient than water because they burn instead of swim
