  • A significantly modified version of this surgery is performed in Budapest and has been particularly helpful for keratoconus patients. The operation is performed in a few minutes compared to the traditional 15-30.

  • why oh why would anyone do this to their eyes??? It almost seems medieval

  • Micro-incisional surgery is highly dependent on the skill and experience of the surgeon. I have personally seen excellent results from a current technique that is a modified version of the classical RK.

  • I had this done in the early nineties and I am having a lot of trouble seeing, especially close up now. I think my vision is getting worse by the day, I would be interested in any study out there. I also heard high altitudes can cause an RK patient to go blind?

  • @mondiablue You need to sue and find out if there are any research studies or anything at all that you can participate in that may offer help for those were were butchered by rk surgery.

  • i had it done back in the mid 80's. I think it was brilliant! there is a bit of an fuctuation, over the day, but compared to what i had before, no complaints...30 years on.

  • I had an RK done in 1996. My vision was OK for about a year but has slowly degraded. There are 16 incisions in each eye. My vision fluctuates from morning to evening. If anyone has Facebook, search for Radial Keratotomy in Groups. It really bother's me. I hope all that have comment here are dealing with the issue the best they can.

  • i had rk back in the 80's i do indeed have this fluctuation. but on the whole, i can see better than before. 16 cuts seems a bit much though. I had four & eight. but ,let me tell you. even people with "perfect" eyes have these fluctuations. best wishes...Al.

  • Hi

I had this RK procedure by Dr.Artsybashev

in Hungary, when I was 17. I had -2.5 vision on both eyes.

Today in 2010 my vision is 95% and have no problem with night driving.

  • I also had this done around 1989. was 20/20 for a short time. slowly got worse. can't get to 20/20 with prescription, but....MY VISION GOT BETTER in the last 2 years. I no longer wear any corrective lenses. still not great vision, but if i knew my vision would end up being this good, id still do it having another chance. EXCEPT for lasik. obviously id have rather waited. they were just coming out with the "excimer" laser. think that was the same as lasik. wish i would have waited, but its better

  • As many surgerys as I have had, this is still something that is hard to watch. Yuck!

  • I had RK on both the eyes 9 years back and i now have a very high degree of astigmatism. Even the kerometry readings go off the scale. My vision is worse than 6/48. I cant get correction thru glasses, toric lenses (meant to correct astigmatism) dont fit my eye either because the eye has flattened (that's how RK is done). I'm managing my eye with RGP lenses now. Life sucks with this real big mess

  • Was not sure how long ago this posted but wanted to ask you more about your situation

I have the same problems had RK in the 80's long time agao for a long time now I am having difficulty with correct RX on glasses

it is very awlful to hate glasses so to have a surgery that makes you end up with very thick glasses, what exactly is RGP lenses?

    Thanks for any feedback

  • I had the surgery some 10 years back (in india). RGP and 'Toric' lenses are used to correct astigmatism (irregular conformation of cornea or irregular shape of the eye). You have it if you can see better thru tiny pin-holes(a higher cylindrical power also indicates it). The RK procedure involves flattening of the eye, meddling the spherical surface. Because of it, its difficult to get correction from ordinary soft lenses. In this case Toric & RGP lenses give u better correction than glasses

  • Torics are soft & work by holding tears between the eye & the lens thereby acheiving perfect shape. That explains the somewhat better vision with a tear filled eye (for astigmatism patients only). But if y'r eye is too flat, torics wont be able to hold a lot of tears and wont help much. RGP (Rigid Gas Permeable) lenses work because they're just hard plastic & will always maintain the shape. But since it's hard it's a little less comfortable

Have a checkup to know what suits u & good luck!

  • I had this procedure done back in 1994. I was told that I was the perfect canidate for the procedure and that my worst case scenario would be 20/30 vision or better and perhaps that I would need a light perscription of glasses for perfect vision. What a joke, the "informed consent" was Intentional Deceit. I ended up with sensitive, dry eyes,

halos, double, even triple and blurred vision.

Do not walk but RUN away from any butcher who still does this procedure!

  • Update: left eye had a cataract removed; the new lense is still cloudy. due to the RK the surgeon couldn't get the correct power. DAAAMN!

  • Don't Ever do this archaic procedure. I had one eye done in 1985, then Lasik on the other eye. Lasik results are very good, sadly the RK eye gives me problems with night driving (halos, blurred vision, etc.)

It blew my mind the day after RK that the surgeon's own eye doctor did not recommend the procedure.
