I've heard that it can represent the drum major being pushed across the field by the band's music/floating on the band's music. Pretty cool.

@HammerToFall13194 Because of a Drum Major from The Ohio State University named "Tubby" Essington. He brought a face and emotion to the military band, then it just became tradition.
