Southern flying squirrels are mammals (not marsupials), they are native to southern US. The reason you never see them is because they are nocturnal. Southern flying squirrels carry an anaerobic bacteria that is harmless to humans but deadly to the larger northern flying squirrel, that's why there are no northern flying squirrels in the south. Southern flying squirrels can live up to 15 years in captivity and have been a domestic pet for many years.

Just like I said in the last video, those ARE Southern Flying Squirrels. Sugar gliders are larger, have bigger eyes, and round tails. Those are flat tails. Gliders are also a lighter grey, with black stripes.

These are not sugar gliders, sugar gliders are marsupials from Australia, Indonesia, and New Guinea, southern flying squirrels on the other hand are mammals native to the US. The color patterns and body shapes are very different and its easy to distinguish the two.

The only state I know that you can't keep a southern flying squirrel it California, check with your state and see if you need a permit for it though, some states do require you to have one.

My first on fell out of a tree during a storm, my second one was dropped by his mother and my dog found him. They are domestically bred and it is recommended that if you do decide to own one to get it from a well know breeder, but yes they really are pets.

last few days we worked on siding on a hose in long Valley, New Jersey and we noticed that a flying squirrel live in attic entering throw the hole in the safet and the squirrel has a babies. So we convinced the owner of the house to leave the safet open for next month so squirrel babies have a chanse to grow up and leave.So we'll come in a month to close the opening in the safet.

I have three and the dealer told us that they cannot swim so be certain to keep the bowl lid shut. If you raise them from babies and socialize them well then you can carry them around in your pocket.

I know somebody who had one too- she loved hers so much, but it drowned in the toilet while she was in another room. Theres really not an "owners manuel" for these little guys. Good idea to keep all lids closed when not in use.

There is a manual and it was written by some engineer in Porter, TX who ran a business selling them.  He got killed in a traffic accident and his wife ran it for awhile. We got our squirrels from her. She screwed up, though. We asked for two squirrels of the same sex and she gave us opposites. Now we have six squirrels. When they are little it is hard to tell. He warned of the toilet problem. They cannot swimm.

He would hang in/on her clothes, she took him everywhere- dinner, office...at parties he would sometimes jump from her onto one of us for a while. I throw mine gently and he loves it. Just give him a good toss towards a hanging towel and he'll latch on.

The trick is cupping your hand underneath them without their claws touching your fingers. IT doesn't hurt them if you're gentle.
