Can you guys drive over it at normal in town speeds like around 35-45mph. Also can you do it with no "ramp" or anything else leading up to the case. Most of the time when you end up with something in the road it's because you either left it on a tailgate or on top of the car and drive off, then someone else will drive over it before they are able to avoid. I know this from experience and I was really thinking this would be a real life scenario test.
I bought a fairly large Pelican case years ago for storing and transporting a Swarovski spotting scope and tripod head. It works great and the toughness is among the reasons I bought it.
Wow!! I knew my pelican could stand up to a lot, but when you actually see it put to the test it really puts things into perspective!! Amazing tests guys!!
Can you make airplanes out of that material? Think at the lives saved when a plane crashes and just gets a little bit dirty instead of smashed into unrecognizable pieces.
Sweet, making videos like this is quite staple in the video worldm kida like the old TV being thrown out the window. Wish I could have been on the crew, well accept for maybe being Keith, lol Good one. Nice product though, looks great for a Prosumer HD Video camera. pelican.com right, ill keep that as a bookmark. Thanks
I wanted to know, can these boxes be used to store valuables? A friend of mine was looking for something to hold a priceless possession in, something fire proof. I suggested a Pelican.
Hi Sitzogm-I kept the case because it has a lot of bling from the sparkly shot pellets in the lid. we used bird shot and took the choke out so the pattern was wider than normal. we shot from a distance of 27'. The pellets embedded in the front of the case and a few were rattling around inside the case, but the computer was fine. I only did this once, and (legal disclaimer to follow) you should never try this at home!
I love the safety cone. WARNING falling cones. Alright we're safe.
Serious question, what exactly did you shoot that case with? I'm pretty amazed if it was buckshot but there appeared to be zero damage. So ... let us know if that was birdshot or something before I shoot my case and have it warrantied by you guys cause of the video :P
@Stizogm - I kept the shot-up case because I liked the way the pellets sparkle- they came in hot from 27 ft and embedded in the lid. A few made it through and rattle around inside, but the computer is fine- in fact I'm typing this reply on it (probably time for a new computer). I used bird shot and cheated a little by taking the choke out which gave me a wider pattern.
If you are protecting something heavy you will need to use a higher density foam to protect the item from hitting the inside wall of the case. There is a fragility rating that our packaging engineers use to plan the correct interior foam. If the shell of the case did crack we will give you a new one because Pelican Cases and Pelican Storm cases have a lifetime guarantee.
How do I get the pattern of the object(s) I'm going to store in the case in the case's foam? Do I have to cut that pattern in myself with a razor blade or something?
Dont think the shotgun test was real. No way can a plastic case thats thin enough to mold stand up to a blast from a 12 ga. at that distance. I can belive the other tests though.
dont think the shotgun test was real. no plastic that thats thin enough to make a case out of will stand up to a blast from a 12ga. at that distance, no matter how good it is.
Actually I used bird shot with the choke removed at a distance of 27 ft. A few pellets did penetrate but the energy was really absorbed by the plastic. I still have the case with the shot pellets melted half way into the plastic wall. Shine a Pelican flashlight on it and it blings!
I just want to say I will never use a case besides Pelican, I got my pelican to protect glass, and I have never been happier. You guys rule, I'm telling all my friends about the cases, you guys rock. You cannot beat a case that is indestructible, and if it SOMEHOW breaks, you get a new one under warranty for LIFE :).
@KonradZuse420 Yes, they are great and I think if a case was to break, it would be a catch or something, nothing that would affect the structure of the box and the protection of the contents within.
Hell, I went toobing down the Gruene river in New Braunsfel,TX last weekend and tied off my 1120 pelican case to my tube. In it i had my wallet, cellphone, keys, Walther ppks, knife and flashlight. I traveled about 3 miles the case hit rocks and was submerged majority of the trip. when i was done and opened the case not a drop of water had gotten in. I strongly recomend them. They are worth the price.
I have a smaller (1200) case I use for my 2way radio gear and love it. Next laptop I get, I am getting a Pelican case for it! Can't beat them! I bought mine at Markertek.
How does the foam come in the cases? Is it like pre-cut or what? Im kind of confused, because I want case that can hold 4 handguns. Is the 1520 a good case?
I only have one sugestion and that is for the i1015 iphone case i have done a few test ant takes it bou because of the way the latch works if its hit hard enough it copresses enough so that the lach unlaches so if you could inprove on that design i will gratly appresiat it sugestion an over latch or same latxh with some better locking system
the issue you will have in finding a case for this type of guitar will be its width, you should take the measurements of your guitar and enquire with the manufacturers to see if there is one that will fit. check out both pelican and HPRC, but there is also SKB a manufacturer of guitar cases but they are not waterproof and i dont think they have the same resistance to impact.
I think both of them were the 1500 case, but they all have pretty much the same properties: wall thickness, o-ring seal, ABS Blend, etc. purge valves, etc.
The 1490 would be a better fit for a 15" laptop and the 1490CC1 has a lid organizers and an adjustable liner for your labtop. The 1500 has more room in it, but only comes with padded dividers or pic n pluck foam.
I have a Pelican case for a Simpson 260 VOM and for fun drove over the case with a loaded 60,000 pound dump truck. We gave the case three attempts at crushing it and failed. The case is still intact and the meter is fine. My next test is to put just the case on an anvil and try bashing it with a sledge hammer. I bet I can bust it but I'll have to really try to.
Actually it was a 12 gauge shotgun loaded with bird shot from 27 ft, The choke was removed from the barrel. The spread on the shot was enough that most if the shot would embed in the polymer wall of the case, although when I took everything out you could hear pellets rattling around in the case. Kevin
Just bought one of these. I am still waiting to get it. It is on backorder. I can't wait to have a nice and secure place for my new rifle. Best part is that the rifle is OD Green and so is the case.
This is a great video...I want to get a Pelican case for a trip I'll be making soon. I will be snorkeling and don't want to leave my camera gear unattended at the beach. Could I stick my DSLR stuff inside a 1200 and just tie it with webbing to my waist or leg or something? Or is that crazy?
Snorkeling should be OK, diving is pushing it due to the added pressure underwater. You need to check the O-ring seal for any debris, like sand, and keep it lubricated. Also, use a small dry-bag like kayakers use inside the case for insurance.
Cool, thanks for the information, I look forward to picking up a Pelican case. I would probably wrap my camera in a dry-bag too as you say. The torture test of submerging it with an anchor for 2 hours sold me. It probably actually help me a lot to have a floating device out there in the ocean anyway!
Absolutely. When surfing in Indonesia I have to swim from the outrigger to the beach with my camp gear because of the reefs. It actually makes a good flotation device. Use dessicant gel packs though, it will keep the humidity out of the case. I've had trouble with digital cameras working in the tropics, even without getting wet. Kevin
Hi Bleujae1- I assume you're asking how to make custom foam. You can use pic n pluck, which is scored foam which you pull out in 1" cubes- there's a video on that too. For a high end fit, buy a sheet of polyethelyne foam from a custom foam house and cut it with a jig saw blade, or for the best finish, pay the foam house to do a CAD outline of your gun and use a water jet cutter. Kevin
Hi Rick- The o-ring seal acts like a spring lifting the lid against the latches- just press lightly down on the lid while flipping the latches clear. I know it's an extra step, but that's a watertight case. Kevin
You've custom tailered for shooting guns so now do it for shooting cameras - but for the lighting which is the most sensitive and mostly stored in durable containers and transported item in our world.
So, two strobes around 12x8x8 the reflectors, two umbrellas - oh 30-40 inch, power cables, pocket wizards, and two stands.
I mean I've got a cheapo case right now that measures about 12x12x40 - but its a semi soft case.
When are you guys going to make a "Photographers" case that is long enough to hold lightstands & lights. You guys have 10 different sized "Brick" rectangle boxes in shapes and sizes that are almost all the same but no "Long" rectangled cases! Even that monster 1660 wont hold lightstands. I have spoke to you guys to get you to make one "Longer" and you dont seem to get it. If you made a case like a "Footlocker" size you would make a killing on them! No one else makes a lighting hard case.
I know what you mean! i want to buy a watertight for my camera to hold my HV20 , Mic , battery's , and other stuff. i want to take my kayak out on the river and stop a couple of times to take some nature footage. i know my camera is covered. But what about my new $500 Bogen tripod? Why should my HV20 get all the protection when my newly beloved tripod has to sit in it's Bogen soft case?
Agree.. If they have al those relatively same "Shaped" cases in 5 or 7 different sizes they need to make at least one case in a "Long" case shape. To hold tripods,Several Rifles at once,Lightstands,Tripods,Telescopes, Etc.
Look for the Smash Lab episode on Discovery Channel- they load our case in a boat and throw it out of a plane at 100 mph with an accelerometer- it recorded 57 Gs on impact! (Case was fine, of course) Kevin Murphy- Pelican Marketing Director
do you have a link for that? that would be a killer sale point for anyone if the case survived and that the contents inside didn't get ejected out at the time of landing.
What if i lose the keys :S
How do i open it then? Cause i cant break the case :S

I love my Pelican case, but I call BS
1 - He puts the vase in the right, but they smash the vase on the left.
2 - This is possible with anything, it depends on what's inside of the case.
4 - It's a shotgun not a rifle. We don't even see any shot damage to the outside.
Kinemacolor 7 months ago
@Kinemacolor shotguns can penetrate through walls and doors...and if you saw his comment, a few pellets did penetrate the plastic.
falnfenix 6 months ago
@Kinemacolor
1- there were two in the case and one was in already (look again)
2- okay....
3- you skipped one?
4- The shotgun is used to test high velocity impacts not supersonic impacts from an anti-tank round.

No one else makes a lighting hard case.

the 1750 and 1780 are the biggest long boxes they have...check em out...

Yah but those models are very "Shallow" made for golf clubs or rifles not Deep enough to hold any studio strobes or packs.

Great video. You need some nice calming UT music in the background to make it nicer to watch. :D

next... you should drop it out of a plane with a gps device so you dont lose it. Then you can NUKE it, Muahahaha
