This song was the #1 song the week I was born in March of 1952 Today was the first time that I can remember anyway ever listening to it, Great song !!
I heard the ending of this on an old Happy Days episode and had to listen to the whole thing. Even someone like me, from the heavy metal era, can appreciate great music like this.
Great song. Elvis named Kay Starr as one of his favorite singers, and now I can see why. Great pipes and interpretive ability, and a great beauty, to boot! Was the lead vocal in the bridge double-tracked? I wouldn't be surprised; Capitol was doing all kinds of neat stuff with Les Paul and Mary Ford at the same time.
i first heard this song in that film let him have it the story about the christopher craig and derek bentley story, britains worst case of misscarriage of justice
I like this. It's full of soul. Kay Starr didn't just sing it; she expressed it with great feeling. She didn't have anything like the studio sound-manufacturing support which modern performers had. In 1952, you needed to actually sing like Kay Starr if you wanted your voice on your record to sound like Kay Starr.
Before my time but I love this song. What a voice a beautiful voice. Would have loved to have been in this era. Also first heard this in L.A Confidential.
this is a little before my time but I remember reading that some critics (I guess) considered this one of the first Rock'n'Roll songs I don't really seet it but I guess it may have been influenced by early Rock'nRoll or R&B records Or more likely one of the early white mainstream records to be so influenced To me it sounds like it belongs to the 40s as much as the 50s I read that before I ever heard it and I was expecting something different I guess She certainly has a voice and the quality #1
I am starting to appreciate this music more as I get older. The music of today is so shallow-no respect for women or for themselves, cursing and lewd comments about each other. This women had such a beautiful voice without the computers to enhance the voices of today.I thought I would never say this my Father's music from the 1930's to the Standards of the early fifties was really great.Man I was a real snot nosed kid growing up in the 1970's.
My mom used to sing this song all the time when I was a tiny tot. Now I'm a big tater and she is suffering with Dementia. I try to stimulate her memory with music. We have always had a love for music in this house. She says she remembers the song, but I can't really tell. She just sits there. No longer sings along. Thanks for posting it.
Thank you so much for posting. I love watching people's faces when they hear this song for the first time. Their skeptical dirty looks disappear and their eyes go a little glassy. Suckers.
great song im 24yrs old and i think its a great song i actually have this song in my music collection.
first time i heard it was when i went to the movies with my nan to see LA confidental. fantastic movie that was dunno how crowe and guy didnt win awards for there preformances in that movie.
This song was used on the 1952-53 CBS game show entitled "Wheel Of Fortune", hosted by Todd Russell.
Although it has no direct connections to Merv Griffin's show (which began in 1973 as "Shopper's Bazaar"), there are distinct similarities.
Most notable among the connections is the 1959-62 Australian radio/TV adaptation, produced and hosted by Reg Grundy. Grundy later adapted the subsequent "Wheel" versions based on Griffin's show.
wow, great song, and that so looks and sounds like my Newcomb that I use in most of my videos of Doo Wop/Early Rock n Roll 78's and 45's! The only thing is, the raw audio from it hasn't got a lot of highs.. better to use a little bit of EQ if your set up allows you to do so.. plus this player puts out way too much at 400 hz, you might want to take that down about 7 db if you can, to get a flatter frequency response.
Nice, I still have all my 45s but most are scratched as they are all piled up un a box and have seen some action at party's in the 60s 70s 80s. I also have lots of 78s of my Mums from the 50s and my Grandparents from 30s 40s. they are good fun.
Wheel of fortune was the first record that Derek Bentley bought. Sadly he was later hanged at Wandsworth Prison on 28 January, 1953 for the murder of PC Sydney Miles. Derek denied being responsible to this murder. Christopher Craig fired the fatal shot. Derek Bentley`s conviction for murder was quashed by the Court of Appeal in 1998. Rest in Peace Derek Bentley and also Sydney Miles.
Late 1952 finished radio operator school at Keesler AFB 4 of us were outside of Tuscaloosa,Alabama when we hit a turkey buzzard in the early morning. While we were getting windshield fixed we had breakfast in a little diner. I played the juke box for 5cents a song except Kay Starr "Wheel Of Fortune" was 10cents.Funny how the memories come back.
I wish people knew about some of Kay Starr's other top notch songs, particularly "What A Difference A Day Made" that she recorded with the Charlie Barnet Orchestra (big band) back in 1944. My other favorites are "Side by Side", which my mother loved, and 1950's "Bonaparte's Retreat".

Together, they provide a clear, focused perspective on Kay Starr's classic hit, a great fitting tribute to this performer!!...Lloyd.
