I'm marooned in Cincinnati on the business trip from hall, but I had the pleasure of seeing Scotty perform last night (and meeting him in person. I can assure you, there is no speeding up going on in this video. The man can play it all, and more. There were times when I just sat back in my chair a laughed in awe and amazment.
Jeez! I thought Tal Farlow had a whacked nervous system! Scotty Anderson's blend of bop-shred just made Ol' Tal sit up and take notice. This absolutely kills...my monitor started to give off fumes. This is insanely good playing AND it shreds! I loved the response that "I've just had an 'I'm selling all my gear' moment."
Some people are just freakishly wonderful at what they do; bless them!
I personally dont thinkt this is sped ud, but wow! I dont know what impresses me most; his playing, or his knee jumping up and down that fast, check out his knee at 6:00
Just kidding, awesome guitarist :) but try to move your leg that fast yourself - what the? ;)
Before I moved back to the midwest from Boston I mentioned to lumpyt that there was a guitarist in cincy that we had to see play. Lumpyt knew of Scotty and before long we were sitting at a little bar outside of the city watching the most jaw dropping guitar playing. Scotty is one of the greatest guitar players i've ever seen and also one of the nicest and most humble individuals you are likely to meet. He played at a 50th birthday party for lumptwangage and myself and what a time did we have!
I believe that your initial comment that night was something along the lines of "It's like walking into a little joint and having DJango Reinhardt playing 10' away from you!" ... and you were quite right.
yes i remember saying that. his line playing is just unbelievable and then the double stop stuff is killer and besides all that he plays some of the most beautiful chord solo stuff. i wish and hope that he will put out a cd of just chord solo stuff.
I am wondering what kind of superlative i should choose to qualify this performance. After seeing most of super technicians( Lane Gambale Lagrene Tamayo Saggese etc...)live several times over and surfing youtube constantly, i didn't think i could still find anybody who would make me pinch myself in disbelief.Thanx for sharing..
Holy Cow! I think I burned calories just listening to that tour-de-force! Sensational.
Anyone remember Chuck Barris of THE GONG SHOW dancing to Woodside whenever Gene, Gene the Dancing Machine came out? Little Chuck wouldn't kept up with Scotty! I doubt a hummingbird could have!
Just found out that Scotty has been booked to play an outdoor concert series in Greenhills this spring/summer. Free of course. It is under a gazeebo and a great setting for a concert. I'll keep you posted on the date.
1954 is the year all the greatest guitarists were born, Uli Jon Roth, Mike Stern, Steve Morse, Eric Johnson , SRV, George Lynch, Al Di Meola but Scotty is hands down the best of them when it comes to technique and improvisation
Cant wait to see the video. Very cool. Wish I could have went up to see him in dayton but he'll be playing down here in Cincy again next month. In fact, I think he's booked for shows locally over the next three months.
Canal Street was sold out and the gents burned it down! I shot video from the front row, but will have to wait to get the separately recorded audio from a Cincy friend to replace my unusable audio. I'll post something once that happens.
For those of you in the southwest Ohio area, CityFolk will be hosting the Scotty Anderson Band at Canal Street Tavern, in Dayton, on Saturday, January 31, 2009, at 8pm. Hope to meet some of you there!
Now THAT is about as close as one can get to total consciousness. Thanks so much for posting this, anyone with an appetite for Scotty A. and XTC clips is A-OK in my book. A grateful nation rejoices.
so if I told my friends that i watch arguably the worlds most sublime guitarist on youtube, but its just videos of him rippin away in some tiny ginmill with a couple of the boys, while stealing a swig of bud every now and then, do you think anyone would believe me?
The whole damn scenario is surreal! Besides the jaw-dropping playing, he's one of the friendliest people you'll ever meet... very humble, too. I'm going to see him tonight, in Cincy... no cover charge!! Gad, it's a wacky woild!
I was there last night front and center !!! We are trying to get him for a gig just a few miles up the road. I am in awe !!! Your right, he is the nicest pro player I have ever met !!! Can't wait to see him again. I just wanna set my guitar down after seeing Scotty rock the place last night. Did you like Summertime ? My friend Daphne really rips on that song. The two together, WOW !!!!
Yeah, it's an odd mix of encouragement & discouragement that I get for my own playing when I see Scotty. "Summertime" sounded great. During the last break, I asked him about that new Tele he was playing and he takes me up on the stage and wants me to check it out... "just take the amp off standby" ... yeah, right... I'm gonna turn up Scotty's amp & play his guitar in a club full of people there to hear him! Crazy mofo! : C } That was my bud, Jason, that sat in on brushes during the last set.
I saw you sitting down with the guitar. I was thinking to myself, who's that lucky person getting to play the guitar. Ah, must be a close friend. HA HA !!! Awesome deal. Were you the people from Dayton ? From what I understand, that guitar was built by a guy named Doug Drews who lives in my town. We hope to get Scotty into a place called The Bearcat lounge in Greenhills. They are building a new outside area deck and hope to have a grand re-opening next month. I'm still buzzing from this show.
Dayton it was/is. The new Tele isn't bad... a bigger/brighter tone, but personally, I like his other/older Tele, for the tone alone. Good luck with your gig! They are a joy to work with. Dave Haley (Two Bones And A Pick, out of Boston) & I booked Scotty for our mutual b-day party... BEST.PARTY.EVER.
Incredible playing. Scotty's in his own league, nobody does double and triple stops like that. He's like the late great Danny Gatton though when it comes to gigging, he chooses to play close to home and not do tours. I did see him play in New York at guitar show, i was blown away by the amount of talent he has, Scotty is like a modern day Jimmy Bryant with that wild "hillbilly jazz" style. Please post more if you have of this, it's great!
Not that it's an issue, but Danny seems to have done much more touring than Scotty (I saw Danny only once), but this is just another aspect of the "apples & oranges" comparisons that seem to follow Danny & Scotty's playing. Danny's playing/performance was stellar. The more that I hear Scotty, the more that I hear his difference from Danny, yet his playing is just as staggering. One of my greatest musical wishes would be to have heard that -planned- collaboration between the two.
If you look closely, when the light hits it just right, you can see an odd warp in the Tele's pickguard, perpendicular to the strings. I'm guessing that the heat from all that right hand action is the cause : C }

People please do not make stupid comments about the speed of this video.
If you've ever seen Scotty Anderson live you'd know better than to waste your time with a comment such as that.

The title for this video might sound like a description of the action, but it is, in fact, the name of the song.

@capnovenmitts It's called Jumpin' At The Woodside and I believe it's a Count Basie tune from the '40.s
