learning this, such a good performance to go off! People have all day to cough yet they somehow need to during amazing performances....grrrrr 2:02, 2:35, 2:53....
You do a wonderful job conjuring up this magical image. Beautiful colors, phrasing and voicing, I like your tempo and the way you pace the piece. Makes you forget about time.
That was a really nice performance.I'm also studying this piece and it is not easy to play it.First of all,it's very hard to read the notes when you start for a person who played only classical pieces such as Chopin,Beethoven,Rachmaninov etc. Totally different!
And second, you have to be careful to every note you play, otherwise there might be weird sounds, like mine! I hope mine is going to be like yours one day,my teacher would be really impressed!
I love this work... however, I'm not crazy about this presentation for a live audience. I thought the pianist, Dominic Smith, played the "soft" or piano parts too softly. That would be fine for a recording, but not in a hall where such minute sounds are swallowed up by the venue.
The "softs" actually begin and end as double piano... and although you probably haven't had experience with instruments and halls like the ones featured in the clip, a full-size concert grand will speak even the most subtle tones to an appreciative and respectful audience. This was bravura, outstanding playing.
Amazing performance of this song. I am learning this piece for my applied piano class and this performance has given me some great ideas on how to make my piece more expressive. Two thumbs way up
Beautiful playing....Im currently playing this for a provincial competition and this piece is not terribly difficult in terms of notes, but is difficult in creating the right atmosphere and sound from the piano.
it has been proven that the "Performer will somtimes deliver the music better than the Composer himself!" It's like.....The Wright Brothers invented the airplane, but Boeing has taken it to new heights and made it a practical reality for everyone to enjoy many years later!
actually people when Debussy played it he played it faster there is a phonograph recording of Debussy playing this actual piece you should all listen to it before you talk crap about the tempo!!
I learned this piece last year, and it is my favorite piece by Debussy. You and I have very similar interpretations of the piece, except my tempo was different in certain areas. I love your performance. You are a very expressive player. Keep up the awesome work!
It's a very fine performance for his age. Very clean and transparent. No doubt his win was well deserved. Still, for my taste, it is far to "clockwork." Nothing to worry though, those things usually come with age and experience. He will enjoy a find career in the concert hall.
It's fairly difficult because you have to play chords a lot as you go up and down the piano. Often it requires four to five notes on one hand to play.
It's a great interpretation...obviously one wonders about the sonic differences between a Steinway and a Yamaha. It's difficult to compare it because the video usually filters out most of the high partials, but the Yamaha tends to have a darker tone that's great for this piece.
i just love this piece and wish i were able to play that, but there are some parts in this piece, where my hands aren´t big enough =(...well i am 14, so my hands will hopefully grew and be one day big enough^^...thx for uploading 5*****love his inerpretation. lovely^^
This is an extraordinary interpretation of a technically incorrect score. Many papers have been written about the performance issues with this piece since Debussy used quarter notes and half notes interchangeably at times. Obviously the Debussy player piano scrolls give insight into exactly what he meant despite his score, but there is still much left to the performer. Note that the pianist seems emotional at the end of the piece. This is even more emotional to perform than it is to listen to.
technically incorrect score....by Debussy...yes...you want to sound like Boulez talking to Stravinsky that there was a mistake on Le Sacre. Obviously there WAS NO MISTAKE, there was a decision made by the composer. It's the same with Debussy. There is nothing incorrect on the score. The only thing that's incorrect is that theorists have TOO MUCH TIME to do NOTHING.
wow! color tempo speed we are asked to envision the cathedral sinking and rising again - sustain - everything claude wrote FANTASTIC JOB YOUNG MAN ! best renditition not only utube.. simply fantastic! 8 of 5 stars cest magnifique!
I enjoyed your interpretations, however i found it slightly too rigid and mechanical. Dynamics and emotion we're there and well balanced, I just found it too chordal at time. It's Debussy, let it flow :). Although i probably couldn't near your performance that's just my take on it. Great job. 4/5
WOW! That was brilliant! To play Debussy you really have to put your heart into it and i definitely saw that in your performance!! just amazing! AMAZING!!!
this is the most wonderfully sensitive performance. having sat in the front rows for this, it is a treat to be able to hear it over and over again. i look forward to the chance to enjoy more of the same.

As A frenchman I was raised on Pommard premier cru and Debussy..

I would love to learn this song on piano, but my piano is so out of tune, it's pointless. Anything below the 4th octave is flat by 1/8 of a step.

it's 20th century Debussy, it's supposed to sound pleasing to the ear not be restricted by musical rules.

but pedals rock
great job - 6 of 5

I think the speed is perfect. Even if compared with the Michelangeli's one. (this is little slower than michelangeli's one)
I'm studin' this piece for my diploma exam.
Compretly agree with you when you say that a little bit more emphasis is better.
