i have to admit..that was one fast pigeon. But falcons are not known for their pursuit capablities. They normally climb to a high altitude and go into a power dive and their prey never sees them coming...the impact usually kills the prey instantly. Falcons have been clocked at over 250 mph in a dive. But pigeons are far stronger and faster than they are given credit for...and also have great endurance.
Pigeons are faster than falcons. I always knew that. Falcons are faster only when they drop toward their prey. In a horizontal flight, the pigeon wins. It has more speed and can move aside suddenly.
there are breeds of pigeons in southeast europe which are known for great speed diving. I don't think it is near the 180+ range, but it is still very fast. They dive straight down and pull out of the dive at a pretty low altitude and make magnificent recovery/landing displays. All birds which fly to survive (which is probably all flying birds) are magnificent, breathtaking natural born aviators. They put human pilots to shame, in almost every aspect. vision, cardiopulmonary, etc.
In these videos you can see that the falcon level speed is equal or greater than that of a pigeon. Some of the pigeons are racers and some are probably not, but almost all falcons on that videos are falconry birds , that are lacking stamina end speed of a wild falcon and have metal bells and Jesses that bring additional weight and obstruction of aerodynamics.
There is only one case when the pigeon is pulling away from a falcon and that is by climbing because of lighter loading of his wings.
dude imagine yourself about to become dinner... I will fly as fast as i can not to be eaten alive. It's instinct and only healthy birds can escape from the hungry predators. I am a pigeon flyer as well and i see many times my pigeons being chased. It's either the sick or the very young birds are always becomes fallen prey.
Racing pigeons can fly faster and have more stamina than falcons. However, a dive from a falcon more often than not takes the pigeon by surprise and more ends with the pigeon taken out. Still, if the pigeon spots the dive in time, then the dual is on with fantastic acrobats and the pigeon is at an advantage in terms of speed and lasting power. The falcon loses the chase.
I would like to bet $3,000 seriously, I"m not joking to "houston81" and take up his challenge with "flyinglottos" if we can film his challenge for "You Tube" with his falcon and these racing pigeons and, I'll split the winning in half with "flyinglottos" One conditions as I said before when "flyinglottos" wins I would demand the falcon to beat the crap out of "houston81" with it's dead carcas and make him BBQ It and eat it in front of us wearing his Mom's underwear and bra as we also film it.
Well after the couple years this video has been listed I have came to a conclusion...
ANY ONE who owns a flacon or any other bird thay thinks it can take one of my top racers... BRING IT ON. We will even get it on video and let the youtubers check it out.
To all of you pigeon haters that hunt with falcons and etc. I am all for betting. I have seen my top racers out fly, climb, and manouver to many times.
My friend, statistic says that 28% of falcons attacks are successfully, which means that most of the time pray (in this case pigeons) wins. Statistic include young and mature birds. Mature birds have around 44% success in hunt (including pair hunting), which puts prey ahead in %. The most successfully falcon was one male that had 95% success rate(but that is very rare)
My point is, in what I was described in in my earlier post, referring birds speed under different conditions :)
@flyinglottos what kind of pigeons are those that the lil girl was holding? my neighbor has one identical that he found under a bridge as a baby and it has taken a liking to me..It fly's over here everyday and lands on my window to see me..starts coo'in....i mean like clockwork everyday......it looks exactly the same.....are all pigeons as fast or is that kind particularly faster than most? thanks!
The fact is: falcon is faster in short level flight and in a dive, helped by biggest pectoral muscles compared to his own size and streamlined body! Falcon can sustain higher G loads helped by his incredibly stiff feathers and bulk body structure!
The fact is: Pigeon can longer sustain his maximal speed , is more maneuverable at lower speeds , accelerates better at lower speeds and has better climb rate helped by his lighter wing loading and more rounded shape!
Only bird of prey that can follow pigeons maneuvers and acceleration is a Goshawk and Sparrowhawk, but they can get there only by surprise attack lacking the speed of pigeon. In the open sky , only Peregrine falcon is capable of getting near them , and he can use his 27 G pull force and brute speed from dive to catch them. Every bird has his own strong and weak spots and wins the one that puts her self in position to use them in the best possible way!
When the falcon misses pigeon in a tail chase more then once, he most often goes back to the flock, and uses his stoop to try again, because it is less energy consuming than a tail chase.
In the tail chase, falcon trying to follow pigeons every maneuver, loses speed and lighter wing loaded pigeon using his better acceleration and climb rate goes away. Smart falcon always remains above the pigeon in a tail chase, and does not fallow his every move, instead he cuts him from above!
To by able to come in position to attack pigeons high in the sky, first you must reach them, and not all the time is approaching falcon above them, instead he must work hard on the wing to level up! No other bird of prey could do that! When he comes close, pigeons make evasive maneuvers in a flock , like one body. That is the time for a falcon to use dive or a stoop to split flock apart! In most of cases studied, falcon do not begins hunt from a stoop, he uses stoop to break flocks formation!
Researchers that have studied Peregrine falcons say that no bird could mach them in level flight speed including pigeons! Only top racer pigeons could come close!
The thing is that Peregrine has heavy loaded wings and that the pigeon is more light loaded bird , meaning that the pigeon has higher climb rate, and can fly longer at their top speed. Every time pigeon avoid the attack, he starts climbing thus making heavy loaded falcon harder to follow, which looks like he is faster in level flight!

Nice video I just started raising pigeons, on my first training flight with my young birds I had a Red tailed Hawk dive bomb them, and the results were amazing. The hawk flew off without his meal and a handful of tail feathers. He got all but two of the tail feathers from one bird. The feathers are growing back but he refuses to leave the loft now.

In this video, you'll notice that the falcon didn't have the opportunity to attack the pigeon from above. As a result, the pigeon outflew the falcon and beat it handily.

thats bullshit. maybe you forgot to realise that falcons hunt by free falling stright down from thousands of feet taking the pidgeon out. That and a falcon has been clocked at 242mph (400km/h). Though in saying that that pideon sure was quick lol. But yeh, no living creature in the world can move faster than a falcon

If the general public knew that Racing Pigeons were the fast birds in the world they would get more respect. People have forgotten that Racing Pigeons saved more lives in the World Wars than any other animal. The Natzis released peregrines to try to stop them but 95% of the pigeons made it home, though some were wounded by gun shot.
racing pigeons are faster in level flight because of their power, however, when the falcon stoops (dives) the pigeon is in danger. i hope no falcons get my doves. :(
men in my placemany falcon try to chasae my racing pigeon, i think several time but they always failed becauseof the speed and mind advantage of my racing pigeon
the pigeon will always attempt to gain a height advantage- because the pigeon is a faster FLYER (NOT DIVER) than the falcon. Also, common street pigeons are fast enough to escape falcons also- provided they are in good physical condition.Falcons use a height advantage along with their supreme stooping ability to dive- attack birds. What people don't often mention is the prowess needed to inflict a fatal claw attack in a fraction of a second at such high speeds which drops the bird to earth.
If it was my tipplers it will be a harder, mine .wen stooping goes kiss cross and leave falcon perplexed..they have a reputation for that. as those pigeons have two kind of flight.. on calm sores slowly like a swallow and in speed fast like a swallow again... my friends call ma pigeons gauthali..means swifts. and falcons are usually lucky wen pigeon is young, wounded or lost.. else its a even match, no other bird can challenge falcons more. i love to see falcons pissed off.
class production, pigeons are my favourite and would always outdoo a hawk/falcon on a straight.its when the poor gets have done 500 miles and are nearly home, then get caught that pisses me off.
I really like Falcons and Eagles. Really! I have Birmingahm Rollers and Escampadissa´s. If it wasnt for the birds of prey I wouldnt have the chance to watch my Escampadissa diving. I love to watch my Escampadissa evading Hawks. They look like missiles coming back to the poigeon loft. :)
Have to agree with some of the comments below. Tail chasing is one thing. But in a stoop a falcon going to catch nearly every time. There are even some buteos that can catch a pigeon from a stoop.
eh this is a well put together video!!!! no arrguing there !!!! but in the end the bird that enters the loft is a chequer, probable fact is that the falcon actually caught 'silver wings'. but i live in hope that one day the pigeons get one up and stuff the falcons and hawks:L
like predators are cool, dont get me wrong, but not when they're effing up my training :L
Flipperisgay and ieguy3 are both right. Peregrines can fly at par with a pigeon or dove. Peregrines have demonstrated the ability to "stoop" from above at over 200 miles an hour. So unless your bird can fly over 200 miles an hour on the wing (which is not possible), its life is in major peril under a Peregrine Falcon.
Come to Rochester and let it loose under the Kodak Tower. See if it can escape Mariah (our infamously extraordinarily aggressive resident falcon). My money is on Mariah.
Although actually, if the Falcon shown in the very beginning is the same falcon doing the hunting, it is not a Peregrine Falcon. Mature Peregrines are grey and white. Although juveniles have several hues of brown, they have a very distinct pattern which is not present on this "intro Falcon" on the video.
Ok in a stoop IF the pigeon is unaware. On a straight run the pigeon & the peregrine are about the same speed but the pigeon can out dodge the peregrine. Once a smart or experienced pigeon starts to climb alttitude at a high rate of speed the falcon is left in the dust. My dad & uncle use to raise racers & i've witnessed plenty of chases by hawks & peregrines & not once did any of their birds ever get caught. Watch Birds of War about how they used pigeons during WWII. Very interesting.
This makes sense. A pigeon lighter than a peregrine probably can outpace it in a climb. I've seen peregrines catch pigeons a number of times, but never in a long climb.
I've raised pigeons and race birds for forty years and have friends who are master falconers. flipperisgay is right. Almost any pigeon, feral, homer, or just good flyer can outfly a falcon in a tail chase. Once that falcon has its pitch though and begins a stoop, it often takes an old, experienced pigeon to outdodge and outfly it. It'd also be interesting to verify that birds with the white rump actually have a better survival rate under peregrines.
What type of Falcon is that in the beginning of the video perching? That's not a Peregrine Falcon. The colors are right for a juvenile, but their feather patterns are VERY distinctive and this bird does not have those patterns.
lol this is funny. Falcon is set loose after pigeon is flying. This is not how falcons hunt. Put the peregrine in the air let it get a pitch then send out dinner. You will have a very different outcome. Come on you can do better then this. You wanna make people belive your birds are good, do it right and have it get away from a well trained falcon at a pitch.
Great video, glad the pigeon got away! Most times when a Peregrine misses it"s prey at first, ussually a pigeon wiil outfly the Falcon! The Falcon has skill at diving reaching over 200MPH ,but cannot fly at this speed,as some people seemed to believe!!
My falcon would nail those birds. Hes been clocked diving at over 165mph! He would destroy those cute pigeons! I have hunted him for the pat 3 years. I love to take him out in the country to tear up suirrels, rabbits, crows, and he has taken 1 snake too!!!!!!! In Town he murders pigeons and crows like no other.
Yeah, side by side... How about side by side my bird above yours... Let's say 300 ft above yours... Your bird will be mush... All admit side by side your bird will probably win.
@houston81 u are no more than a fucking idiot the racin pigeon clearly beat the beat the falcon only way ur falcon catches that pigeon os if ya got it beefed up on steroids
a swift is the fastest bird on the planet in level flight, about 70mph and they only land to breed, but i dont think their a match for a racing pigeon when it comes to maintaining absolute top speed, ive seen a racing pigeon average over 70mph over 650km wind assisted tho but still pretty incredible that they can go that hard for that long, name another bird that can fly 650km in 5hrs 48mins.
great vid, falcons are only a problem at home when uv got a large flock and they train at tree top hight. a small flock the trains high so they can all see him coming and hes got no chance. pretty amazing that they can out fly a falcon in an outright contest but the falcon can only last a few minutes the pigeon could keep it up for hours if needed, they are the ultimate fliers. no contest all a falcon is better at is diving, but that doesnt help much with a good pigeon.
Any good racing pigeon should be able to outclimb any falcon. Pigeon men who complain about losses to falcons need to look at their racing stock first.
Pigeons, especially the racing pigeons bred for speed, are the fastest birds in level flight. But of course falcons are superior in diving skills. A pigeon is no match for a diving peregrine falcon.
Great video, loved the music to go with the theme, also it's nice to see that the hawks and falcons don't always get their prey, our racing pigeons (which come from Dove background) are the best of the best, yes we lose some that is to be expected but it is much less than you think, the predators would rather get the easy meal first! Again I enjoyed this clip very much and what a great ending to the video superbly done congrats!
Nice vid. Racing pigeons are faster climbers than hawks/falcons. Falcons/hawks are pretty even flying level with pigeons, but lack stamina and they dominate at diving. Pigeons only survive, first by luck and then by experience. They learn they need to climb above their attacker and some learn to loose them in trees. Most hawks/falcons give up once they loose the advantage of hight and suprise. It looks like this one was ethier young, desperately hungry or is used to getting his pigeons.
I will agree to that, but we have had a lot of pigeons go down to falcons, we just happend to get this one on video and thought it was internet worthy. Thanks for the Comment!
that is not a dove its a racing and homer pigeon not a dove and pigeon could out run falcon if they know wat they are doing ima make a clip of my falcon vs my pigeon and the pigeon that u call dove silver wing is not the name it is a blue bar a regular pigeon
Falcons are way faster than pigeons, they can go more than 150mph when they are diving. The Peregrine falcon is the fastest animal in the world.

Here are some interesting titles where you can watch tail chases between falcons and pigeons:
1. New Zealand Falcon chase 2
2. Cetreria, Altaneria, halcon a paloma.mpg
3. Cetreria, Altaneria, copla de halcones, uno del campo, a paloma.mpg
4. Falconstoop
5. harry tail chasing
6. IX TROREAL cetreria
7. Peregrine Falcons vs. Flock of Pigeons
In all cases falcon lost intial speed from stoop and started tail cahse.
We can discuss each aspect off flight on every video.

Sure the Perigrine can out dive the pigeon, but not in a tail race, no way.

The Natzis released peregrines to try to stop them but 95% of the pigeons made it home, though some were wounded by gun shot.

racing pigeons are faster in level flight because of their power, however, when the falcon stoops (dives) the pigeon is in danger. i hope no falcons get my doves. :(

Falcons don't stand a chance as long as the pigeon keep on climbing. But once the pigeon starts to lose altitude, it's the end for it.

the pigeon will always attempt to gain a height advantage- because the pigeon is a faster FLYER (NOT DIVER) than the falcon. Also, common street pigeons are fast enough to escape falcons also- provided they are in good physical condition.Falcons use a height advantage along with their supreme stooping ability to dive- attack birds. What people don't often mention is the prowess needed to inflict a fatal claw attack in a fraction of a second at such high speeds which drops the bird to earth.
mikethebike7 2 years ago 2

yeah falcon is the fastest...but in short period of time only

Have to agree with some of the comments below. Tail chasing is one thing. But in a stoop a falcon going to catch nearly every time. There are even some buteos that can catch a pigeon from a stoop.
Orion508 2 years ago
in a climb yes the pigeon wins out.
but in a dive that pigeon is toast honestly.

their is no such thing as racing falcon! they don't have the ability to find their way home.

People should breed and train racing falcons, and then lets see if that pigeon could escape. :-)

eh this is a well put together video!!!! no arrguing there !!!! but in the end the bird that enters the loft is a chequer, probable fact is that the falcon actually caught 'silver wings'. but i live in hope that one day the pigeons get one up and stuff the falcons and hawks:L
like predators are cool, dont get me wrong, but not when they're effing up my training :L

My money is on Mariah.
oneworldguy 3 years ago
Although actually, if the Falcon shown in the very beginning is the same falcon doing the hunting, it is not a Peregrine Falcon. Mature Peregrines are grey and white. Although juveniles have several hues of brown, they have a very distinct pattern which is not present on this "intro Falcon" on the video.
oneworldguy 3 years ago
Ok in a stoop IF the pigeon is unaware. On a straight run the pigeon & the peregrine are about the same speed but the pigeon can out dodge the peregrine. Once a smart or experienced pigeon starts to climb alttitude at a high rate of speed the falcon is left in the dust. My dad & uncle use to raise racers & i've witnessed plenty of chases by hawks & peregrines & not once did any of their birds ever get caught. Watch Birds of War about how they used pigeons during WWII. Very interesting.
Tobyl999 2 years ago
This makes sense. A pigeon lighter than a peregrine probably can outpace it in a climb. I've seen peregrines catch pigeons a number of times, but never in a long climb.

wild pigeons (rock pigeon) & Racing pigeons r way different in flying ablilties.. maybe like saloon car & racing car lol
Ichkeria 2 years ago
I've raised pigeons and race birds for forty years and have friends who are master falconers. flipperisgay is right. Almost any pigeon, feral, homer, or just good flyer can outfly a falcon in a tail chase. Once that falcon has its pitch though and begins a stoop, it often takes an old, experienced pigeon to outdodge and outfly it. It'd also be interesting to verify that birds with the white rump actually have a better survival rate under peregrines.
ieguy3 3 years ago 4
What type of Falcon is that in the beginning of the video perching? That's not a Peregrine Falcon. The colors are right for a juvenile, but their feather patterns are VERY distinctive and this bird does not have those patterns.

hmglor 3 years ago
lol this is funny.

You want to bet? Your falcon will lose if we start side by side. No 165 mph diving head start. {BRING IT ON} I could use some extra cash.
flyinglottos 3 years ago 9
Yeah, side by side... How about side by side my bird above yours... Let's say 300 ft above yours... Your bird will be mush... All admit side by side your bird will probably win.
houston81 3 years ago
if you reversed the dual and had the pigeon attacking the falcon with a 300ft height advantage - i'd wager the pigeon will win the dual aswell.

a swift is the fastest bird on the planet in level flight, about 70mph and they only land to breed, but i dont think their a match for a racing pigeon when it comes to maintaining absolute top speed, ive seen a racing pigeon average over 70mph over 650km wind assisted tho but still pretty incredible that they can go that hard for that long, name another bird that can fly 650km in 5hrs 48mins.

great vid, falcons are only a problem at home when uv got a large flock and they train at tree top hight. a small flock the trains high so they can all see him coming and hes got no chance. pretty amazing that they can out fly a falcon in an outright contest but the falcon can only last a few minutes the pigeon could keep it up for hours if needed, they are the ultimate fliers. no contest all a falcon is better at is diving, but that doesnt help much with a good pigeon.
