I really enjoy your stuff--since you're playing GFR! For me, you reveal complexity in the drum play that wasn't clear to me just listening to the music. A good example of this is your play on "Don't Let Them Take Your Gun."
Nice job on this too, but I wish you would do the studio version as well --- the drums on the live version are somewhat simplified in comparison.
@Chas4132247 Yes the drums on the studio version a really a lot different and I would agree a little more difficult. Actually almost a different feel.
I'm glad you are enjoying this music and this video. Thanks
Shinin On is a one of the Grand Funk's Drummers song,I think. A lot of high lights from the middle to the end of the song! You are great at not only skill but groove. Keep On funkin!
(But I'm a Base player and Mel works hard in this song ,too!)
Gives me CHILLS, my friend! I cut my teeth on GFR as well, as soon as I heard "Are You Ready" on the Live Album I was hooked (I've played bass for 33 years).
To me, when a player respects a song/band enough to totally nail their parts says a lot - all I can say is I'd love to jam with you sometime! I'm not necessarily into tribute bands, but I'll bet if we found "Mark" we could definitely get some people smiling on!
muito muito bom mesmo, ficou perfeito cara, mas ainda acho melhor a levada no chimbal de funk no shinin'on ,mas ta perfeito mesmo bom trabalho o/ igualzinho ao show
Just love watching you cover all of Grand Funk tunes! Of all the bands you do, GFR moves me the most. You seem to really have passion when you play the GFR ones. Thanks for the entertainment.
@Rawhide53 I'm glad you do. Yes they are my favorite band to play. I know all of the songs. And it's comments like yours that make me want to take the time an put these together. Thanks so much.
@knightevilmagician - Thanks so much - You don't see too many people covering him these days. Just trying to let people see how he plays! Thanks again
Two things - Again, thanks for such an awesome performance and thanks so much for returning my ears to the rich skills of Grand Funk Railroad. I just sit here watching and listening in awe.
@TheDrumChannel - Indeed, and I personally understand just how much work goes into it (drum mix not even included) - A/V recording, edits, codecs, rendering, uploading - It's certainly a Labor of Love and your work is proof of that Joe, thank you!
Perfection! That was a blast to watch, love those drum rolls. Made me dig out my GFR CDs and rip Shinin' On to my mp3 player for some yard work. Thanks, bro!
Great job! It just blows me away on how you figure out exactly what Brewer is doing. I guess that when you drum so much, you hear everything. Keep the videos coming!
@webman1956 I'll keep making them if you keep watching them! I guess it's just training of the ear. Like when a piano player can hear something and just play it and figure out all those notes. I think that is so hard to do, but he probably says the same thing about drums. Thanks again so much.
@webman1956 One GFR song that might be worth doing is "Rock & Roll American style" from the "What`s Funk?" album. It kind of reminds of Farner`s version of "We`re an American Band".
Absolutely fantastic, Joe. You really have every aspect of the video cover down. You know I'm a big quality freak, it really makes your videos that much more enjoyable to watch. Keep up the great work - 5ive stars and Two Thumbs Up from me. *****
@MyTwangyGuitar - Thanks Sam - I'm trying! I still can't render in AVI - My machine just won't preview properly and I can't edit without a realtime preview, but I did figure out what format it likes, so I'll just stick with it for now till I get a better machine. Your vids are just so crystal clean it kills me when I see them. Thanks again for all your help with the videos and if you see something wrong, please let me know. PS - did you see the tribute video for Rob that I did in March? TTYL
@prince8260 Thanks man - Nice compliment.. Brewer has a lot of heart and soul in it too. Always had and always will. At least he's still out there playin. I know that's what I would do.
@fredthejunkman - Well wouldn't that be nice - I guess it has happened but I'm not sure I'm an aspiring artist any more. More like an expiring artist :)
But I love to play so I guess I'll be here for a while.
Nice job! (again) Let's not forget that Don Brewer is not only playing that great drum part but is also doing the lead vocal on this one too! I have always thought that the Caught in the Act album really showed off how important he was to their sound. His playing / singing on that album is amazing.
@Jimmers131005 - Thanks glad you like it. Yeah he was a big part of the sound. I guess you could say their sound was being refined around the time of that album. For me I remember playing these songs when it first came out so that's why I do these songs. They are the ones I learned on. My brother turned me on to them really early.
Man as always very enjoyable to watch...Im just not sure the people that watch this(unless their also musicians) appreciate your timeing...it's impeccable...What your doing is extremely hard to do and you make it look easy..awesome job!
Joe, wow, I'm again impressed, and again taken back to those absolutely wonderful years of Grand Funk music. You bring new life to this stuff, and make me want to re-enjoy those magic, forever memorable moments of our youth and that feeling of TOTAL FUNK!!!! Great job my friend!!!
@DRMessinger Thanks - I'm reliving my youth all over again as well. It's the only thing that keeps me sane these days in this crazy world we live in. Thanks
@Utube2Itube Would love to see the acoustic version of you. The snare is bigger - look at the left side of the snare (not the right) and you will see the full depth. It's a Ludwig snare but there are no markings on it other than Ludwig. I'm surprised it's lasted this long.
Ah yeah, nice bro - that rocked indeed.... listening while I work (people think I'm listening to the company's president's monthly meeting LOL... if only they knew). We gotta do an American Band collab some day! Wasn't that how we "met"? Tough part will be getting the right vocals...
PERFECTLY played, Joe! Those rolls in the middle are not easy to get right. Brewer is very under-rated as a drummer. Awesome cover! The video quality is way better now and finally I can see how nice and shiny your drums really are.
Im a bit surprised to see the depth of your snare, is it only 3.5"? It sounds great though, but I thought it was deeper judging from the sound.
I recently ordered some recording equipment for my acoustic drums, so expect some of my future covers to be recorded on "real" drums.
Keep up the great drumming.
