I saw him in the early 90s in Allentown PA with the tonight show band. They where very good and they rocked. I get into Hendrix , The Beatles , Miles etc and I can tell any one this guy plays some great fusion too.
Doc is the best all around jazz trumpeter in the biz, as far as I'm concerned. And I think his tone got even bigger as he aged. Kind of like fine wine. Just got better with time.
@MDM87 The tune is "Woody 'N You," introduced by Gilbert Seldes as "Wouldn't You." @bimmerfun Yes, Jimmy hits a clam just as the camera pans over to Doc. Not a big deal, really. Jimmy Cleveland was a fabulous trombonist. I doubt they spent much time rehearsing this material and the part he's playing on this piece has some pretty odd intervals. It can happen to the best of us.
I met Doc last week and hung out with him for a couple of hours. Turns out he grew up with my grandpa and they're good friends. I'd heard of him but I had no idea he was this famous... until I typed in his name to youtube. It's ironic because I also already play trumpet.... haha
@MDM87 ::: It's "Woody 'n' You" aka "Algo Bueno". Dizzy Gillespie has originally composed and arranged it for Woody Herman, but Woody hasn't recorded it then. The first recorded version is with Dizzy, Vic Coulson, Ed Vandever (tp), Leo Parker, Leonard Lowry (as) Coleman Hawkins (ts, ld) Don Byas, Ray Abrams (ts) Budd Johnson (bs) Clyde Hart (p) Oscar Pettiford (b) Max Roach (d) - NY, Feb. 16, 1944 - This composition marks the beginning of the so-called "Cubop", a fusion of Cuban rhythms & bebop.
Doc is the greatest ever. i have a trumphet he designed after his own, a Conn 61B
No one will come close to what he has achieved, EVER It was bought as a grade school grad present back in 1976 WoooHooo. Would love to see some videos of him playing from his High, Wide & Wonderful lp where he plays 2 trumphets on every song. Recorded with him playing 1, then overdubbed with him playing his trumphet. I'm in Heaven when i listen to that lp
@DancingSpiderman : Look How He Expresses Himself...Most 28 Year Olds 2-Day Can't Even String2Gether A Descent Thought Wave Out Of Their Minds Expressing Any Degree Of Internal-Substance For A Coherent Structured-Sentence...Humble Doc!
I have heard Doc so many times I can't keep track- and he has NEVER disappointed! A truly great musician and classy performer as well. I have learned a lot from him over the years!
In 1969 I just bought this Dan Electro six string bass for 75 bucks at Manny's music store on 47th st. and who did I see in his car sort of stuck in traffic?.. It was DOC! I told him how much I loved his music and reminded him of my dad.. who was a wonderful comedian who Johnny LOVED!!! but Freddy Dekorvia did not. JazzvideoGuy ty! I hope to hear from you soon? My name is sammy
Had Severinsen not had the tv gig he'd have no doubt been among blue note's recording studio's cadre of giants now so universally recognized for their musical integrity and genius.
OK maybe it's just me but I don't understand the criticism of Doc's playing on this. The number does not show his ability at all, and the recording is terrible. But check out his chops at technique at 3:00 for the next 15 seconds or so. Suberb IMO.
Sounds to me like Doc is in a period when he was influenced by many other great players but has yet to develop his own, more showy, big band style. One piece is not enough, and maybe the point was to honor Dizzy with something referencing his style. Nice to have a long enough career (can you really make a living doing that?) to have a style that develops!
Thank you so much for posting this... I love seeing videos of my grandfather's performances. Definitely check out his recent work - El Ritmo de la Vida.
To answer an earlier post on the personnel of this 1958 clip, that's drummer Ed Thigpen (soon to join Oscar Peterson's Trio thru '65) and bassist Eddie Safranski (formerly a star soloist of the 1945-48 Kenton band).
Wow i knew Doc was swingin but this is just so cool. I have never heard Doc do this sort of thing before. He almost sounds like Chet of Miles in some parts of the head. I like his tone here too its very warm.
NHockerJazz - "I have never heard Doc do this sort of thing before."
Look for his old Command label albums where he does some playing like this. Doc's sound and overall style changed subtly over the years. His sound here is different than say on Rhapsody For Now, Brand New Thing, Night Journey, etc.
There's a player named Gary Guthman who does a pretty good job of emulating Doc's 60's sound.
doc plays regularly in san miguel allende in mexico where he lives and plays at 83 he is great. playing for 50 years, AWSOME . I recorded it and have it on utube.
Doc has always been an exceptional trumpet player. He was cast as a bit of a clown on the Tonight Show, but when he picked up his horn, he never played anything but fine music.
Does anyone else think that young Doc looks like Michael Scott from The Office?

Can't we look at football AND look at America's classical music?
Yep, that looks like a Schilke. I play a 14A4A.
It's funny to hear Doc calling the Jazz modern music! :) And ya, he got better with time, his attack of his notes just became amazing!
