  • Does anyone else think that young Doc looks like Michael Scott from The Office?

  • I saw him in the early 90s in Allentown PA with the tonight show band. They where very good and they rocked. I get into Hendrix , The Beatles , Miles etc and I can tell any one this guy plays some great fusion too.

  • Can't we look at football AND look at America's classical music?

    Yep, that looks like a Schilke. I play a 14A4A.

    It's funny to hear Doc calling the Jazz modern music! :) And ya, he got better with time, his attack of his notes just became amazing!

  • i didnt know doc played schilke mouthpieces.. hmm

  • This is a very well performed piece! However, is it just me or is Doc Severinsen hard to recognize without his mustache?

  • Doc is the best all around jazz trumpeter in the biz, as far as I'm concerned. And I think his tone got even bigger as he aged. Kind of like fine wine. Just got better with time.

  • Great, great trumpet player, of all times.

  • @MDM87 The tune is "Woody 'N You," introduced by Gilbert Seldes as "Wouldn't You." @bimmerfun Yes, Jimmy hits a clam just as the camera pans over to Doc. Not a big deal, really. Jimmy Cleveland was a fabulous trombonist. I doubt they spent much time rehearsing this material and the part he's playing on this piece has some pretty odd intervals. It can happen to the best of us.

  • I met Doc last week and hung out with him for a couple of hours. Turns out he grew up with my grandpa and they're good friends. I'd heard of him but I had no idea he was this famous... until I typed in his name to youtube. It's ironic because I also already play trumpet.... haha

  • @xRockChalkJayhawkx

    You play the trumpet and you didn't know Doc? Okay, here's another....Al Hirt. One of the best.

  • Symply Great!!!

  • WHAT'S THE TITLE OF THIS SONG???

  • Doc is the greatest ever. i have a trumphet he designed after his own, a Conn 61B

    No one will come close to what he has achieved, EVER It was bought as a grade school grad present back in 1976 WoooHooo. Would love to see some videos of him playing from his High, Wide & Wonderful lp where he plays 2 trumphets on every song. Recorded with him playing 1, then overdubbed with him playing his trumphet. I'm in Heaven when i listen to that lp

  • @KingOfRock61 lol i got one of his 1000b's and i <3 it lol

  • Doc is the greatest ever. i have a trumphet he designed after his own, a Conn 61B

  • Does anyone notice the resemblance between Doc and Lee Harvey Oswald?

  • @BuddysBigBand *Everybody* looked like Lee Harvey Oswald back then.

    It was the haircuts.

  • Who are the other musicians? Drums,guitar etc?

  • lol at his fob glasses.

  • Wow,Very interesting,Thanks for posting!

  • magno

  • Doc was 28 years old in this vid.

    Charismatic guy, I love his humor.

  • @DancingSpiderman : Look How He Expresses Himself...Most 28 Year Olds 2-Day Can't Even String2Gether A Descent Thought Wave Out Of Their Minds Expressing Any Degree Of Internal-Substance For A Coherent Structured-Sentence...Humble Doc!

  • @Standardfrank Yeah, I bet Doc gets a kick outta seeing this clip from time to time.

    Wow, the days when a musician could make a living out of being a musician...

    Fantastic improv player, then AND now...

  • I have heard Doc so many times I can't keep track- and he has NEVER disappointed! A truly great musician and classy performer as well. I have learned a lot from him over the years!

  • man, doc is Killin'!

  • doc plays 10 times better when he playes in this kind of setting

  • Wow, that's great!

  • thank you for this posting!

  • That is how the trumpet is supposed to be played! WOW!

  • In 1969 I just bought this Dan Electro six string bass for 75 bucks at Manny's music store on 47th st. and who did I see in his car sort of stuck in traffic?.. It was DOC! I told him how much I loved his music and reminded him of my dad.. who was a wonderful comedian who Johnny LOVED!!! but Freddy Dekorvia did not. JazzvideoGuy ty! I hope to hear from you soon? My name is sammy

  • don't foget(nit fargasn-yiddish) to l isten to Hawk & Dizzy's Original version of this from 44' with Max, Clyde Hart ,OP.

  • Is that Tony Scott on baritone? And who is the left-handed bass player?

  • @stevster890 - hE DOES LOOK LIKE STEVE CARRELL - FUNNY!!!

  • So relaxed, and how many players double up on they`re lines nowadays?

  • Doc's great, I have to say he looks like Steve Carrel

  • Had Severinsen not had the tv gig he'd have no doubt been among blue note's recording studio's cadre of giants now so universally recognized for their musical integrity and genius.

  • OK maybe it's just me but I don't understand the criticism of Doc's playing on this. The number does not show his ability at all, and the recording is terrible. But check out his chops at technique at 3:00 for the next 15 seconds or so. Suberb IMO.

  • Wow.. thanks for shareing!

  • not the best but its ok

  • Sounds to me like Doc is in a period when he was influenced by many other great players but has yet to develop his own, more showy, big band style. One piece is not enough, and maybe the point was to honor Dizzy with something referencing his style. Nice to have a long enough career (can you really make a living doing that?) to have a style that develops!

  • Thank you so much for posting this... I love seeing videos of my grandfather's performances. Definitely check out his recent work - El Ritmo de la Vida.

  • FANTASTIC!! Thanks so much for posting!

  • Anybody know who this band is? I want to find more of their music!

  • To answer an earlier post on the personnel of this 1958 clip, that's drummer Ed Thigpen (soon to join Oscar Peterson's Trio thru '65) and bassist Eddie Safranski (formerly a star soloist of the 1945-48 Kenton band).

  • I didn't know that Tony Scott played bari sax. I like his sound.

  • Wow! I love the sound of bari, 'bone, and trumpet- the harmonies blend so nicely! These guys really rip it up.

  • Doc is a treasure, for sure.

    Great band, too.

    Not to be a jerk, but is that a 'bone clam at 2.27? I know...Who cares...Wonderful playing, indeed!

  • His voice sure was different back then. If I were blindfolded and didn't know who it was talking I'm not sure I'd even identify it as Doc.

  • I love his sound. I most enjoy how the high notes, rather than become tight and stressed, open up and feel incredible.

  • who's the in the band?

  • trumpet -> Doc Severinsen

    trombone -> Jimmy Cleveland

    sax -> Tony Scott

    piano -> Billy Taylor

    guitar -> Mundell Lowe.

    I can't recognize the bass & the drums.

  • Wow I most definetlt agree musicbeech.

  • what a truley great player!!!!!!

    an insperation to us all

  • what is the name of this song?

  • Groovin' high (aka Whispering)

  • Woody N' You.

  • Hey! Very nice!

  • Wow i knew Doc was swingin but this is just so cool. I have never heard Doc do this sort of thing before. He almost sounds like Chet of Miles in some parts of the head. I like his tone here too its very warm.

    Good stuff

  • NHockerJazz - "I have never heard Doc do this sort of thing before."

    Look for his old Command label albums where he does some playing like this. Doc's sound and overall style changed subtly over the years. His sound here is different than say on Rhapsody For Now, Brand New Thing, Night Journey, etc.

    There's a player named Gary Guthman who does a pretty good job of emulating Doc's 60's sound.

  • DOC are you KIDDING ME?!...... u are too good my friend.....

  • Damn, he had a lot of balls to play like that. Kicks total ass, Love DOC!

  • doc plays regularly in san miguel allende in mexico where he lives and plays at 83 he is great. playing for 50 years, AWSOME . I recorded it and have it on utube.

  • so glad you posted... I'm gonna see if doc is playing any where near me

  • Saw Doc last night in Seattle (2/28/09) and at 81 years of age he was fantastic and got two ovations from a packed house! God bless you, Doc!

  • Doc has always been an exceptional trumpet player. He was cast as a bit of a clown on the Tonight Show, but when he picked up his horn, he never played anything but fine music.

  • what a sound! DAMN

  • Fantastic playing from Doc, but also an incredibly original arrangemnet of the head and outro, FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!

    Many thanks for this rare clip :)

  • Great vintage clip of Doc! Thanks for posting it!!

  • Not to claim that I know jazz trumpeters like the back of my hand or anything, but WOW that was a great Dizzy imitaion that Doc did! Wow!

  • Bad Ass!!!! Doc is the greatest. What a sound.

  • Is that Serge Chaloff on baritone?

  • Tony Scott, doubling on baritone.
