  • I like the song but I appreciate also the nice movie with old photography. The song is actually about the Van Dieman's Land, and the 19th century Irish political exiles, no matter how much extra meaning may be added to it.

  • great song god bleess the hunger strikers

  • Great song by Bobby Sands though Gordon Lightfoot didn't do the music. Bobby also penned a song called "McElhatten". I have seen the lyrics but haven't heard any sing it. Has anyone heard any version of it?

  • You are right about the music. I confused Gordon Lightfoot's "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald"...if you want to to hear McElhatten, Check out Christy Moore's version on his album "Ride On" which is where I got this tune.

  • Thanks for the info. I have a few of Christy Moore's albums but not "Ride On". I'll get myself a copy.

Christy Moore originally recorded 'Back home in Derry.' When Bobby Sands wrote this song, while being held in Long Kesh prison, he called it 'The Voyge.' This is what Christy Moore says about how he came about the song.

  • Blocks, sangI was playing in Derry and staying with The Berrett Family. After my gig, we were gathered in Chamberlain St. having an banter and drinking tea when a bit of song broke out. A lad, just home from The these verses and subsequently wrote out the words for me. At the time, the name Bobby Sands was not known to the world as it is today.

  • The following night I played in Bellaghy where the same process took place when I stayed with Scullion. Later on, he "sang" McIlhatton for me and told me it had been written by Bobby Sands, with whom he had shared a cell while "on the blanket." The name was becoming known to me.

  • He used the air of The Wreak of the Edmond Fitzgerald from Gordon Lightfoot, an air which I suspect has earlier origins. My version of Bobby's song is shorter than the original.

  • Top work.

  • great song................................
