  • I have seen them and am hosting them in January at a house concert.

  • This is VERY impressive & a nice piece of history!

  • God - the mastery of harmonics at that age!!!!!

  • as a guitar player for 50 years, it is such a joy for me to watch this....chet's encouragement for richard comes from a deep love of guitar music, there is no thought of competition....what pleases me so much is just the idea that chet atkins music will never die! also, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Also, this video demonstrates Chet's humility, in that he purposely allowed himself to be upstaged and it never bothered his ego a bit.

  • Richard at very young age and destined to become a guitar monster and a force to be reckoned with in later life!

  • I have had the good fortune to have met Richard of course he was a little older than he is in this video but man can he pick and such a nice guy he took time to show me a few licks he has improved ten fold since this video

  • Precious and PRICELESS.......thanks for preserving this one!

  • The 2nd piece is "Little Rock Getaway."

  • What is the name of the second tune he plays?

  • @scarified101 Its little rock getaway good ain;t it!

  • This to me is one of the most historic video's on youtube, Why? As many know there are only a few real child prodigy's born in ones's lifetime, The second is seeing Mr Guitar himself so amazed by someone's guitar playing. History says Chet was bowled over by Jerry Reed, but that was no 11 year old boy, This is a real piece of music history. Please always keep this video alive for all of us real Chet or "Atkinsfan"s something to look forward to seeing. Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @Atkinsfan Amen to that. I hope to see and hear RIchard (with Julie) in person soon. It's a wonder Chet didn't include Richard in the "CGP" club . . .

  • @thistle876 I sent Paul Yandell an email asking him about this. He did Say that Him and Chet stayed at Richards house and that Richard is one of the best. Would like to know myself why the CGP title wasn't given to Richard. I have to agree and would also like to see Richard and his wife perform.

  • My jaw dropped so far I have repair the floor. Dang ...

  • Don't clap as soon as the song starts! They couldn't even hear themselves!

  • Chet was well known for "sharing" his spotlight with upcomers. You could see in this video Chet's amazement at some of the riffs young Richard had already accomplished. CHet created and recording many wonderful pieces of music but his greatest accomplishment in music in my opinion is the inspiration he was for others.

  • Do you still have the video with Doug Turner playing with Chet?

  • What impresses me aside the fact Richard was so skilled at that age was he did it back in a time when there wasn't tabs from the internet or magazines to reference at will. Passion, determination and natural talent.

Chet was honest as heck and always cracks me up when he goes on rambling but simply the top man.

  • God, at 11 years old, Richard probably didn't really realize the AMAZING magnitude of what he had just gotten the chance to do!! Amazing. He's SO GOOD live now, but was already starting to be a pretty incredible player here.

  • It's really nice to find out he has been good since 11. The way Chet said "and this is the most amazing ..." and paused and hesitated a while and looked at Richard before completing his sentence, "... child, that I've ever ran into" really shows Chet's respect for Richard.

  • BRAVO!

  • amazing !

  • my claim to fame i met and spoke with richard at a chet atkins appreciation do he played great such a nice guy to talk to of course this video is a young richard performing he has improved ten fold since

  • surfin' cable... public access...richard smith and then him in a trio...wow.!..how comw everyone knows not this lads gift...?...I'm mooved...who is the ol' bass playin' dude...? 2 much echo and overalll mix needs to be desired...wow.!anybody?

  • The other guy on stage is Paul Yandell, Chet's sideman for 20 years, and before that with Jerry Reed, and also the Louvin Brothers.

  • Richard was incredible here, and he is till that way. Excellent video.

  • Mr. Chet Atkins, all class from start to finish and Richard Smith is a fantastic player!

  • Brilliant then and still Brilliant so says The Great Chet Atkins!!!

    Mr. Chip's

  • It was in 1982...

  • Many years later when I saw the Richard Smith Trio they played "Whispering". Richard mentioned that Chet was very ill but OK..

  • I've heard Richard play with his wife Julie on cello- anybody ever heard that?

  • yeah i went to see them

  • not yet!

Richard got a damn good feel to the sound of a classic/western guitarplaying with a great clarity without sounding muted!

  • Richard is one of my favourite players!

  • I love it love it love it. Do you have anymore of young Richard? Was this taken in USA?

  • This was in London.

  • That was amazing!

  • That was just awsome - I feel just as enthusiastic about it as I did the first time I watched ..... It wil always be one of my favourites. Compliments to Chet also for his original recordings/arrangemnts AND for playing quietly beside Richard.....I will never stop listening to both of them.

  • hey guys. =)

    richard smith was great then..

if you want to see an 11 year old play guitar like that today, then type in "jwcfree" on youtube.

    you can decide who's better.

    i think they're both good...

but please dont bash anybody ^^

  • Richard done this live in front of hundreds of people and CHET ATKINS at her Majesty's Theatre.

  • Check out the recording on youtube with Richard Smith and Tommy Emmanuel. It will blow your socks off.

  • just did and now i am barefoot!!!

  • Little Rock Getaway was recorded in the late 50's on Chet's album "Chet Atkins in 3 Dimensions."

  • The second song was Little Rock Getaway. Richard was perfect in copying the job Chet did on the original version.

  • Does anyone know the name of the second song they play on this video?

  • I can't believe how good he is at eleven years old... That is just bloody weird and amazing.

  • ha chet let him take the lead thats such an honor.

i still wish i could play like that

  • sounds like some old Les Paul and Chet stuff!

  • Wonderful video of this child prodigy who has gone on to become one of the world's best fingerstyle guitarists. Now living and working in America his playing is just sublime.

  • The World's greatest guitarist

  • This is great!!! How can I get a copy?

  • What year was this?

  • Richard Smith was born in Beckenham, Kent, England in 1971. So, he was 11 at this time which would make it around '82.

  • this guys crazy

  • vip01 Thanks for this upload -What a gem! I've been tryin' to play like that for decades-and still can't.

Oddly enough I know two friends who saw Richard at THIS concert!

Youtube is just the bees-knees -way up there where Napster was!
