We have an '11 Golf Wagon. When you start it, it sounds kinda "diesely" if you will, you can tell it's a diesel engine. However, it's definitely not any louder than our '03 Corolla, or '08 Buick Enclave. It's just a different sound. When you're actually driving around, it again, isn't any louder. It's just a slightly different sound, which I kinda like personally.
@propanemower13 No, it's a Golf TDI wagon. It's the same as the Jetta Sportwagen, it's just called a Golf Wagon in Canada. It's definitely a diesel engine.
@ljguy300 yeah the pumpe is a tdi, but it uses the came shaft to operate high pressure injectors. the pumpe means is pump and the injectors are a pump and injector at the same time. what was wrong with pumpe duse. But the passat pumpe duse engine is not the greatest because of the oil pump/balencer chain tensioner. was prone to failing. but not in the jettas.
@mpgomatic nah i see 2009 and up with soot too, maybe its the diesel they're using?
i changed my diesel fueling station,(from canadian tire/petro, to husky) and added diesel clean to mine and it got rid of almost all the smoke. injection timing is a bit off so it was smoking ALOT before. but still, i think the fuel has alot to do with it. but im no mechanic
ya ULSD is required. ive owned mine a few months now, and i guess here in niagara falls, ontario we dont have too many good diesel fueling stations. even husky only has 42 cetane here.. im having massive problems with my engine now... it gets louder when warmed up, kinda the opposite of a diesel
it isn't true that someone wouldn't see the difference between this and petrol engine, of course he could because however it is quiet still keeps typical diesel rattly type of sound
my brother wants to buy a 2006 VW JETTA TDI for $5000 with 48,000KMs, do you think this is a good buy, or will it probably be a bad car? please answer
I have a 2009 Jetta TDI. It is amazingly quiet, even on cold mornings. I have been to the Jetta TDI Cup racing series (no mufflers). I was in the tent when they started them up before the race. Amazingly quiet. The head mechanic at the VW tent said that Volkswagen started with the shape of the cylinder head and combustion chamber and worked their way forward. You could hear our neighbor's 300D starting up with the windows closed and the TV on. This car is nothing like that.
It's wierd how the US havent caught on to diesels.
In the UK they are classed as "business rep" cars. On the motorways/highways most cars are diesel and driven by sales/IT/management etc.
60% of new BMW's sold in the UK are diesels.
I think the US must still have the old fashioned view. Now diesels are very advanced and push you right into your seat on acceleration, compared with a similar powered petrol.
I dont the think the US will ever get into diesel cars... I drive a jetta tdi, and when anyone around me hears about 40+ mpg they only think of a damn prius. pathetic
BMW's are amazing, they deserve even more credit lol Its strange here, everyone gets small gas engines because everyone buys toyota's/honda's for economy(just because they are told its the best), and they don't offer a diesel... It's a damn shame cause jetta tdi's and similar german vehicles are just now being well commercialized, and everyones used to small gasoline engines from japan, even American car companies are starting to immitate Japanese cars lol
Personally, I love diesel technology, and I would buy one. If the federal government didn't tax the shit out of diesel. The government wants us all to buy GM's and their "flex fuel" cars, cause they cannot build a proper diesel of their own. Here, Diesel fuel is almost $2.00 a gallon more than gas.
Thus the reason America has no idea what to do with diesel. A dodge cummins with a 6.7L engine gets the same mileage as my Ford Ranger with a 2.5L 4 banger. Brilliant.
Well, it used to be. I looked today, and it is only 20 cents higher! My bad. But, the point still stands. The tier 2 bin 5 emissions regs for on highway vehicles are so tight, the specialized emissions crap that diesels need turns people off. The feds are causing all the bullshit, and people want simple. Diesels are inherently simple, but not anymore. When will the US learn? Diesel is the future.
Diesel was priced lower than regular unleaded gasoline in many locations during a good part of this year. The price fluctuates depending upon the season. Prices go up in the winter due to the demand for heating oil. (Diesel fuel and heating oil are quite similiar.) ;)
LOL yeah i never understood, and seriously probly never will understand why the US taxes the shit out of diesel fuel. It completely fucks over truckers like my dad.
thats why diesel cost so much...there is no way that the government will let people save money somewhere....diesel is alot cheaper to make also, so it should be ceaper than gasoline as it is in all european countries, thats capitalism for you my man
Jesus fucking christ!!!!!! only 2 bucks for a whole gallon? You luck bastards! :D In the U.K we pay 12 bucks per gallon. Consider yourself lucky you irak gold diggers :D
2 bucks won't get you a litre here. I can't belive thats all diesel costs in the states (and that to you is actually expensive?)
I said $2.00 MORE per gallon. Diesel is generally less expensive than gasoline in the European Union. So, Instead of making baseless sweeping generalizations about what my country does in the middle east (although a republican, I am against the Iraq war), why don't you kindly learn to read, and stop being a troll.
Regular gasoline is about 3,20 a gallon, and diesel is 3,59 a gallon. I know that's extremely cheap compared to your fuel, but it isn't cheap when the average mpg on most cars here get anywhere from 20-30mpg when in Europe you have cars that get 40 to 50 even 60mpg. But fuels prices have slowly been rising and someday most likely will get as high as yours and that's why I wish American's would learn more about diesel's and accept them. I've always liked diesel cars better for many reason's.
Ahh but thats the thing... In April 2009, fuel here was around a buck a liter... Within a year it shot up double that to 2 bucks a liter. (around a $4 buck hike per gallon.) So even back then it was still expensive compared to you guys.
And to be honest, saying that crappy built engines is the reason you guys have cheap fuel is not really fair, is it? So it really wouldn't matter if you lived in the EU and had high prices, or lived in the States and had low prices...
well first of all if it's a snowy winter then the noise gets muffled by the snow. And second of all, they're not loud at winter, at least not my dad's jetta.
We don't have the golf variant in the states. it's a jetta, sry. ppl down the street got one, it's definitely a jetta. the sign on the back says so. hahahahaha
That's the EPA estimated. It is rumored that with some lightfooted city driving and a highway cruising speed of 75 that it could get closer to 45 combined, or higher.
That's a golf 5 kombi !

No offense, but Americans can be very slow to catch on to certain things....
Take a BMW 535d...you are rammed into the back of your seat and doesnt stop till it hits the 155mph limiter, yet still does 35mpg.
You country needs to catch onto this quickly.
