Haha this gives me tingles down my spine every time I hear this! One of the best guitar solos of all time without a doubt, that guitar he built is one hell of a guitar!!
This is from Curt Mitchells 'Learn to burn' lesson on cassette from the early 90's. (Just pieced together). I still have that tape somewhere. Somebody copied and edited it and put it on a CD with some early Van Halen songs and demos.
I'm ready to take a beating from everyone out there. But this is not the take that went on the Thriller album. It's Eddie for sure. But those of you that know Ed's music well (like me) can hear this is an alternate take. There's a wammy dip before sliding into the 2nd note in the beginning that's not here. And the tapping section at the end is off time here.
@iownallnoobs Sorry pal, but it's not the take that went on the album. I've been listening to it since it came out back in '82 or so and I've been playing it for 20 years on guitar myself. This is not the take. Close, but not the one that went on the album.
@skrason Actually.... he DID NOT play it all in one take. From Don Landee and Ted Templeman's mouths.. it's a composite of 2 or 3 solos. That's what a great engineer does.. he makes it sound like it was done in one take. Still in all. an AMAZING solo, and definitely the one that went on the album. Possibly one of the best in the history of pop music.
Jesus, that is so good it's stupid. It's not my favorite Eddie solo, not by a long shot, but it is still so brilliant, so many miles ahead of anyone else at the time, or even to this day. Seriously, I've said it before, but is this man from another planet? There is no one better. No one. Period.
@davethedrummercancun I agree to an extent. Metal Fatigue came out in '85. Eddie had already developed his sound by, at least, '78. I do know that Eddie LOVES Holdsworth. :)
THE best guitar solo of the 80's (with Still of the night 2nd!). If the stories are true that Luke asked him to do this and Eddie done it on the quiet so the rest of VH didn't know because he didn;t want to loose his cred by playing on a Jackson record in the 80's, you'd never guess it with this solo!!! Outstanding!
Eddy's playing makes me feel retarded.. He's sick..

To those who try and play this....listen to how fuckin CLEAN his tone is.
So if I have have to listen to another bedroom wannabe play this solo with a tone that is covered with distortion, I will have to hurt somebody.

@TheHockeyCentral one cannot match legato volume with picked volume without compression.

Never mind the greatest solo of the 80s, there are no solos in mainstream music anymore let alone classics like this.

@skrason @skrason --Listen to Allan Holdsworth on any of his music {my favorite "Metal Fatigue" the entire disc}
And you will hear the birth / creation of Eddie VH.
