Air Canada says they no longer fit into the overall fleet strategy, with the long range focus being on the 777 (and eventually 787), where most of the passenger loads could not justify the larger (and more expensive to operate) 747. I think they had a good thing with the 747 Combi, which allowed lucrative freight to be carried in the aft section of the main deck. We'll see if the strategy was right, but Air Canada wasn't the only carrier to move away from the 747 for the same reasons.
The good ol days when Air Canada still had jumbos. The queen of the skies. Now all they have is twin engined planes. First they dumped the L-1011, then the 747, their two most magnificent birds. It's too bad that it has come to this. I used to love spotting at Pearson, but now there are no 747s, DC-10, L-1011, and no Terminal 1 parking garage to see them. I don't spot anymore. Nothing much to see and no vantage point to see it. The end of an era. The golden age has ended.
I was up there the last day the REAL T1 was open. In fact, I got the car up onto level 9 one last time, negotiating piles of concrete debris since level 7 and 8 were in the process of demolition. I have so many photos of the T1, I will make a slideshow video when I might get time to do it! Totally agree with your comments... Turpin's Taj Mahal doesn't even provide an observation deck,.,. how sad, the golden era for airplane viewing is gone in YYZ.
If you ever get that T1 (Aeroquay 1) slide slow up and running, I would love to see it. There are so few pics and vids of T1. Please post me here if you do so. I have searched for many images of T1, and find very little. This is important to me -please advise ASAP!
You can't possibly say that, I mean, B747 are definetly still around at YYZ, , and , srry but you have to move on, I mean, right now, there are so many other jets to spot, not just the 'golden age' jets. You have to move on, we all just cant stay at the point in the world where air canada still had B747 etc etc.
Of course I can possibly say that because that is how I feel. I'd rather go to the airport to see the classic jumbos than what is there today. And no, there are very few 747s at YYZ today compared to yesterday.
@LakeNipissing You're more than welcome to come to Buffalo. Smaller airport and less hassle to go through. Except for those Fucking TSA gayboys that now have to feel you up making sure you're not working for Osama Bin BUSH or perhaps BARACK OSAMA.
When I was a kid, I spent so much time on the parking deck of the old Terminal 1, watching planes on the weekend - it fueled my passion for flying for many, many years.....! I miss the fleet mix of Air Canada, but also the heydays of the 707, DC8, VC10, L1011, and countless other birds no longer seen in our skies....
@myndenway Those were days of varied designs and diversity. Now it's a lot of the same old.
I do have to say though, Air Canada's A340s, especially the elusive -500 series were pretty beautiful planes and made for a treat when spotting. Now we just have to beg Cathay, Air France, and Etihad to send them.
@myndenway It's just small-minded bureaucratic pettiness. No reason why they couldn't have set aside a couple of legitimate viewing areas. Heck, put parking meters or something and pay to get in--I would! But no such deal. Everything now is about the bottom line and liability. Common sense has rarely been as uncommon as it is in our times.
I wonder if we will ever see an A380 in air canada colors?I doubt it though but hopefully when the economy turns around we will see them buy 4 or 5 of the new 747-8 intercontinentals.
Air Canada is going the Boeing 787 Dreamliner route. They already have orders in place. More efficient, smaller and similar range.
The Airbus A380 is going down the toilet with poor sales and does not make any practical sense in this bad economy and less people travelling than ever. Airbus needed to sell 471 Airbus just to break even and recover their R&D costs, but the could only sell 198.
I have to disagree and also agree with you. yes A380 is not so profitable and sales arent up-yet. once the global reccesion is over, and travel is in high demand. Im pretty sure that A380 will be popular. However, some airlines are saying the A380 is hard to fill though...
Gas prices and technoligy advancements and the fact there owned by the government along with the canadian take over led to most if there demise and the fact they can afford one of the best sky ships built! i miss those old colors thats real canadian no that ugly light blue green.
Its been almost twenty years since AC was government owned.(51%) You cant buy Air Canada stock now it's parent company is Ace Aviation. But I will say when Air Canada was renewing their fleet in the 80's they should have went with boeing,a North American company and not eurotrash Airbus. The only reason they didn't was because Brian Mulroney walked away from a meeting with Airbus with a bag full of kickback money with a dollar sign on the outside of it.I'd take a 747-400 over an A340 anyday.
There is hope though with AC junking the A-340's for 777's and dreamliners. A little off topic here...you got a '69 newport? If they only made cars like that now. I got a '65.One of the very few cars that will trounce my RSX
yes my 69 got a 383 high perfomance big block dual rams head manifolds 4 barrel holley and other fun stuff all factory, haha its a sleeper, you got an RSX type R or just a RSX?
1. this vid makes me cry.
2. at 0:17 i swear i see air canada's with the dark green livery? strange

Why you called its classic?
soccerockman 5 months ago
@soccerockman Classic refers to Boeing 747-100 and -200 with the small upper deck and spiral stairway.

why did aircanada takeout all of their 747's??
TheGleeVids 1 year ago 2
@TheGleeVids im guessing because of the fatal crashes that occurred with the 747s
applexD360 6 months ago
@TheGleeVids They replaced them with the 777's.

WHY DOES AIR CANADA HAVE TO RETIRE THE JUMBOS OR THE 340's? They were my favorite in the fleet , do u agree?

Again, thanks for a great video of a wonderful era. Do you have any DC-8s or 707s captured at Pearson from those days?

You don't often see the short upper deck anymore. I've become so used to the 400s that it's strange to see those older '47's. Great video!

Unfortunately there is a very good reason for this: the GTAA's insane landing fees!!!
I believe YYZ still has the highest landing fees on the planet.

I never fancied the half-makeover when AC switched over
to the extra-thick or double cheatline.
Air Canada's planes looked much sleeker just previous to that.

Because now they fly 777's :)

no they sold a340 and bought b777.
they dont need 747 because they are bigger than europe but they have only 20 000 000 people...so what for 747?
