Watson died of cardiac infarction on May 17, 1996, while on tour in Yokohama, Japan. According to eyewitness reports, he collapsed in mid guitar solo. His last words were "ain't that a bitch", probably in reference to the song "Ain't that a Bitch". His remains were brought home for interment at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California.
got into JGW back in the 70's as a teenager, as I got older I found the blues and more about JGW, All I had was the funk but he his now up there with BB as my favourite blues man, gifted and talented and at the top for his genre of music.
I love this song and to lose this genius was a crying shame. I'm just really getting to know you now Johnny and you're even now helping me though and making me feel young again. Love you JGW, you're the best in this whole round world!
A shame such a talent has left us. This and "real motha for ya" have to be my favourite johnny tracks.... what a versatile talent he was from this skin tingling track to the real heavy funk tracks. The words to this still feel heart felt when he sings them, a true wordsmith, a true genius. RIP x
This song is one of the most beautiful of all time. This song and A real mother for Ya. Started my memories floodin back from gooddays and nights gone by. thank you for the video and thank to youtube for the website. Drohegda
JOHNNY GUITAR WATSON was simply the greatest 'natural' songwriter ,rapper and showman of all time!!!! It is a shame that your contribution to funk/soul/r&b/blues/rap music and greatness was never truly acknowledged by the music industry.I wish I had the opportunity of seeing you live. Anyway your music will live in our hearts forever. Thank you, and thank you brother
The rap group The LOX sampled and interpolated this song at 0:39 to 0:49 for their song "If You Think I'm Jiggy" on their album MONEY, POWER & RESPECT in 1998.
i had tears in my eyes when my big love johnny passed away. i have nearly all records of him, thank god that he died on stage instead of a fucked up hospital, this is every passionated musicians dream,
his sound ,talent and music was unic, we will never get something like this again.
Johnny hitting the keyboard made me goose bumbs all over. in his studio recordings he played every instrument by himself. what a big loss u r my friend Johnny RIP
I feel ya my brother. I cried like baby. My man was cold. There will never be a nother Johnny Guitar Watson. My man was smooth. NOTHING LEFT TO BE DESIRED. My friend Walter Holland out Dallas Texas turned me on Guitar Watson in 1976. A great year. I loved the 70's, Like Stevie Wonder Quote "I wish the days could come back once more" Later dude
@youngofasho2 My wife & I acually SAW HIM Live @Concerts By The Sea in Redondo Bch, CA. in the early 80"s. He was FANTASTIC! His band was Tight too! He came out into the crowd & I gave him some "DAP"! He noticed my wife and sang to her. It was unbelievable. He music lives on!
oh shit, been looking high and low thanks for the post 3:07-4:15 that man but a breakmin the song for your ass to remember hate we dont get music like this anymore truly a classic

This was one of the most unfortunate things, that could ever have happened to us.
aishasgoat 2 years ago
I do know, why this happened.
The main reason for this, is that this man did socialise with some wrong people in Paris before, which should not have happened.
