There are two types of punk, British and American. Britihs bands like the Clash and the Sex Pistols were famous for their behaviour and not being able to play their instruments very well. An American punk scene did develop, starting with the Ramones but it was a lot more artistic than the deliberately dirty and downmarket British scene. Green Day belong in the American variety. I'm a big fan of both punk varieties, that's just how I see it.

A lot of music critics say Pete Townsend is the grandfather of punk and this is the first punk song. He once said the Who was all about rage. When they played Won't Get Fooled Again at the Concert for NY City you could TASTE how pissed he was. Listen to Quadrophenia and see just how much anger there is on that album.

I love The Who, I think they are geniuses of music, and are even more amazing for creating this song. I think that they are an extremely talented group of musicians, (Pete Townshed and Keith Moon are gods of music)...but I have to say...I think this version is better. Yes, the original Who version is better. Keith Moon is an outstanding drummer (who was, the world's best, if not on par with John Bonham). John Entwistle was an incredible bassist too, and Townsend's guitar playing is equally as brilliant.

The Who's version also featured the first (one of) Bass solo in rock history.

So yes, the original is much better (listen to it if you haven't already). However, I'm glad Billie Joe Armstrong has accepted this, citing The Who as an "inspiration".

This version is alright. The Who Version is better because it is one of the first hard rock songs and the lyrics are great. Keith Moon is also a much better drummer, Entwistle and Townshand are also better muscians. Roger Daughtry is also a better singer and lets not forget the Who version has one of the first bass solos in it.
