  • blueoctopede: Are you sure mom didn't "fix it".

Did you hear anything like, go to another room,go to another room.... shut that thing up..Then the next day it was "fixed"...lol..jk

  • Funny, the exact same thing happened to mine back when I got them. I had three, each one successively breaking within a week or so of acquisition. My mother just ended up getting the money back. I haven't thought about this toy in years.

  • interesting, thank you for taking the time to do this :)

  • I ordered one of the new ones... I look forward to getting him... I was 14 when I got one of the original ones.. The Damn thing broke within a week.. same thing happened to the replacement one.. When I get mine I am keeping him for myself....

  • that is so cool that tape is like an 8 track but proprietary. BTW im downloading the mp3 from the mediafire link in the description and is it ok if i download this video and add it to my PSP?

  • Sure, I don't mind :-)

  • thanks.

  • Ah, Quiet Please. That's still one of my favorite TR tapes. It's a shame that I can't listen to it any more though, my Teddy's speaker no longer works, and I can't find the version of that tape that goes with the big Teddy.

LOL at being able to fast-forward! Were you just touching something metal to the circuit board?

  • Yes, There is a variable resistor on the board that the factory uses to adjust the speed of the motor, Being that different motors may be slightly different speeds they were able to dial in the exact speed for each unit to ensure they all sounded like they were suppose to. I never turned it because I didn't want it out of adjustment, I just By passed it with a screw driver.

Would you want an MP3 copy of the tape? I should be able to jumper the speaker to the line in on my pc & get a copy.

  • Are you sure It's the speaker? Usually speakers don't just go bad. Most likely the belt has rotted on the tape player, Usually It's not too hard to take a philips screw driver & open the back & change the belt, But don't use rubber bands, They break really fast. You need to use a rubber belt designed for tape players usually black in color.

  • My first guess was the speaker, because the sound was the first thing to go. At first he would move his mouth/eyes to the words but no music would play, now he just makes a buzzing sound with no movement or sound. I'll look at a hardware store or something and see if I can find some of those bands though, thanks for the tip. I've done some work on big Teddy before so maybe he won't be too hard to fix up =)

  • When I get some spare money, I want to get one of the new digital ones, Just to have a modern version of something I grew up having as a child & maybe one day share with my kids If / When I have kids.

  • Yeah, it's a shame the next generation won't have great toys that taught good morals like Teddy did.

The new bears are really nice, the mp3 cartridges give a great crystal-clear digital sound. What got me though was they actually re-recorded some of the dialogue and added in snippets from the animated show, so the mp3 is considerably longer than the original tape. Who knows, maybe this time around the stories will actually follow a plot!

Be prepared for a lot of servo noise, though!

  • That thing is actually quite well built.

  • The cartridge TR's were made in the early 1990's. The original ones were cassette mechanisms.

  • Imagine how people constructed that big purple dinosaur Barney. I wonder if that was a robot?

  • Good video! There might be a sticker in the battery compartment that should tell when this TR was made. 1985 is just the year it was first copyrighted.

  • This version of Teddy Ruxpin might have been produced later in the 1980s, as the 1985 copyright on the bear only indicates when the line was first introduced. I read on the Teddy Ruxpin FAQ that there may be a date sticker in the battery compartment.

  • Thanks for the info, I've never looked closely at the battery compartment, I'll check it to see.

  • That's neat! i was at someone's house one day a few years ago and saw on of these. It was in one piece, though. Sadly it had dead batteries or something so I never heard it play. I remember thinking it was neat how it used "a little 8-tracl"! I would be neat for you to make a video of its direct hookup, to hear a more full tone to the sound. Also, what speed does the tape on this run at?

  • I have taken apart a lot of electronic toys made during the 80's as a child & they always amaze me how they built things back then "Before Digital" 3 Toys that really stick out in my mind are Teddy Ruxpin, The playskool record books, That had records made on to the pages & Another toy I can't remember the name of but you would slide a piece that read barcodes on the book pages & It would read the book to you, You had to "scan" each page & It had a built in limited#of words & would make sentences
