They do tell a story. Epica and The Black Halo tell the story of Ariel, who in a quest for knowledge, sells his soul to Mephisto for immortality and for Mephisto to do anything for him during the time he is alive. During Ariel's quest, his lover, Helena commits suicide. Ariel goes into a deep depression, till Mephisto brings him another girl *Margaretta?* who Ariel seduces and sleeps with.

Eventually Ariel betrays Mephisto. You can read the whole story on wikipedia.
